In the swamp north of Paludan...

Cromwell jogged after the bear and brought his sword down on its neck. The blow was not terribly clean; it was difficult to pierce the animal’s thick skin. However, after a couple torturous seconds she did finally collapse and become still. Cromwell dragged this carcass back to where they had first split up, accompanied by an entertaining ditty being hummed by the talented Clair.

They arrived to find the others grouped up, discussing the events of the trip thus far. Joe was talking to Will about what they had seen, how far it was, and what might be alchemically important, so they could relay the information to Alice when she had time. Currently she was seeing to Kyle’s various wounds. She set his arm and made a splint, as well as giving him a small packet of herbs to chew for the pain, and then saw to his other shoulder. She collected a larger volume of Dragon’s Blood and rubbed it on the wound. Kyle quickly discovered that the herbs were as much to mask the pain from that process as they were to help with his broken arm. As she worked, she talked to him to keep his attention off of the only partially masked pain.

”The story behind Dragon’s Blood is one which is constantly argued. Many old traditionalists believe that it comes from the site where a dragon died. They say the roots of the trees reach down into where the dragon’s blood had seeped into the ground, and that they draw this blood up instead of sap. They say the healing properties come from the fact that the blood could heal any injury done to the dragons, and retains that ability.”

Kyle asked,”What do you think?” between gritted teeth.

Her face quickly adopted a sly smile. ”I think that if it worked that well for the dragons we wouldn't find nearly so many Dragon’s Blood trees.” She shot him a small wink. ”Besides, I think Dragon’s Blood acts more like sap than blood. Look at how it turns into a paste as I rub it.”

After she finished with his shoulder she briefly talked to Will to make sure he was alright. His balance seemed fine, so they quickly set to work making the map of what they had found so far. The copse of Dragon’s Blood trees, the strange lake, the snaketongue grass (as Alice identified it), and the strange red vines all made it onto the map, making their various debacles look more like successes than they had at the time. Looking up from the map, Alice addressed the group.

”You’ve all put yourselves in danger to try to map this area, and that is helpful. But I’m not sure we should move on. Kyle is injured, and could use some time to recover. On the other hand, I’m sure we must be making some progress. If we can make it to the other side, with some more landmarks along the way, it will be a big help when alchemists try to navigate this area later. What should we do?”

Cromwell rolls his eyes.
"Kyle is too love-struck to make informed decisions, so his vote doesn't count. What about you guys, keep going, or quit while we're ahead? I think it'd be ok to maybe try to venture a little farther, but nothing major."

In the swamp north of Paludan...

The group stumbled upon a mini-update...

The group advanced approximately half the distance it had thus far traveled before it finally saw light through the trees. Cromwell dashed forward to look out onto the rolling hills that lay beyond the swamp.

"It looks like we've come to the edge of the swamp, but I'm afraid the map is still rather incomplete. It starts off well enough, I'm sure people will be able to find the Dragon's Blood trees, and orient themselves from there. But I'm worried that as they approach this edge they'll lose their sense of direction, I know I would. We should find a couple of good landmarks around here, and then this map will serve as a good start."

In the swamp north of Paludan...

The group set off towards the south, working its way back towards Paludan. Each group member set off early on in this trip to find a few more landmarks. Kyle was immediately met with great success. He found an abandoned hut near the northern edge of the swamp. Taking some time to search the building, he found a coin purse of 10 iron shillings under a loose floorboard, which had at this point rotted far enough that the coin purse was immediately visible to any visitor the long forgotten abode. Upon hearing of his success when he returned to the group, Clair set off. She found a set of rocks that looked as though they were claws protruding from the ground. There were three of them, and each was a heads height taller than Clair. They looked very intimidating, but more importantly very distinct. Joe looked to replicate Clair’s find, and did find a rock, but one so indistinct that Joe could not even find this same rock after walking a couple of feet. Will experienced similar luck, finding a tree he believed to be unique only to pass ten more like it on the way back to the party. Cromwell represented the last hope for a genuine landmark and he delivered, finding a patch of Rainbow Fronds which drew the eye even through the dense swamp. After this find the group picked up the pace, hoping to get paid and return to their inn.

Paludan

Soon they reached Paludan. Master Feran was waiting at the gates, a patronizing gaze cast towards the returning mercenaries. He clearly assumed that they had returned failures, and had not reached the northern edge. Alice marched up to him as defiantly as she could manage, although even that appeared a little apologetic, and handed him the map. Surprise flitted across his face as he looked at the completeness of the map. He called over two other alchemists and the trio stood discussing the map briefly, pointing at the markings for the Dragon’s Blood and the Snakestongue grass, clearly liking what they saw. Alice quietly and briefly relayed the story to her master, and shot a concerned glance at Kyle as she described the injuries he’d sustained. After the two others walked away quickly, presumably to begin the first preparations for expeditions of a more alchemical nature, Master Feran turned his attention to the five mercenaries.
”Here, take the 60 coins, you’ve earned them. Even the few resources you mapped out will help us earn more coin to support this town. And I’m sure there are others out there. I understand a member of your group has been injured. I suppose that comes with the territory of being a mercenary, but I do wish I could do something to help. Regrettably we will struggle to pay our tribute as it is. If I am ever in a position to repay this debt, I will. For now, I have preparations to make.”
With that, the robed man walked briskly towards a group of students in light robes like Alice, and began gesturing towards the map, leaving Alice with the group.
”He actually appreciated it! I got my first compliment for him. And he doesn’t even have to know about the Dragon’s Blood incident. Thank you all so much.” She followed this with quick hugs for each member of the group, before being called off by Master Feran to help describe in more detail what the next expedition could expect to find.

Back at the Inn

A lengthy trip back brought the mercenaries back to their inn. Six weeks had passed since the group left, and the innkeeper was looking for six weeks’ worth of rent. Looking at their meagre earnings the group realized that constituted the entirety of their payment, leaving only the ten scavenged coins and the capybara meat to show for a month and a half’s worth of traveling and work. Pleading their case to the innkeeper, they were allowed to keep the money to invest in themselves, though they would have to pay off that debt eventually. The company again faced the decision of what to do next.

"Gonna check out the village. Who knows what they might have?"

Go check out the village. "Accidentally" bump into Kyle.

"Go get her, mate. I think she likes you."

"... Am I the only one who is kind of confused as to why we are having to pay for six weeks of rent that we weren't even here to accumulate?"
Kyle says as he gets up to follow the other man.
