In the swamp north of Paludan...

Realizing the risk to Alice if the pair were to attack the bear, Kyle decided that pacifying it would be the safest course. With his bow in one hand, the other free, having set down the Dragon’s Blood, Kyle walked a wide circle around the bear, speaking calmly at it. The bears attention was drawn to him long enough that Cromwell was able to walk in quietly behind the bear and get Alice to her feet. As they were moving away from the bear, they caught its peripheral vision. It started to whip its head towards them, when Kyle made a quick motion with his arm, bringing the bears attention back. Cromwell and Alice made it clear of the bear this time, with Kyle also being far enough away to not be in immediate danger.

It was at this point Clair came upon the group. She shot Cromwell a questioning look, with a nod in the direction of Kyle facing off with a bear. When Cromwell simply lifted a finger to his lips Clair assumed the situation was mostly under control.

That was not the case in a different part of the swamp. Will shouted out for Joe, and when he got no response tried to set off in a random direction. He stepped straight into one of the red vines dangling from the canopy. He stepped back from the contact, and suddenly felt woozy. Before he knew what was happening he became so terribly disoriented that he literally couldn’t tell left from right. He seemed to be able to move all of his limbs, but he just couldn’t process which direction they moved in.

Joe was completely oblivious of his comrades struggle, and was carefully walking the perimeter of the grassy expanse in front of him to look for snakes. After a lot of slow careful walking he was able to catch sight of a serpentine form slithering away from him into the grass. It passed by too quickly to see many identifying characteristics, other than that it was colorful, and smaller than a man’s arm.

Stay alert, and keep away from the clearing. Be ready to block snake attacks.

Cromwell whispered to Clair.
"Grab some of the meat, and bring it quickly, we can throw it to the bear to occupy it, and get Kyle out of there.
Take Alice with you, I'll make sure Kyle doesn't get horribly maimed."

Wait for Clair to come back if she listens to me, and tell Alice to go with her. Watch Kyle and the bear, if things get horrible for him, jump in, otherwise stay back.

In the swamp north of Paludan...

Kyle tried to continue calming the bear, but as he was slowly walking around the bear he foot caught on a root. His arms came up to catch him as he fell, but the bear interpreted this as a threat. She roared and launched herself at Kyle, but as she came at him he freed his foot and miraculously rolled far out of her reach.

As the bear sprang into motion so did Cromwell. He already had his hand on his sword, prepared for trouble, and he quickly brought it above his head and down on the bear’s flank. Only the tip met flesh, however, and the attack ended only with a wide scratch down her side.

After handing off a piece of meat to Cromwell Clair was rushing Alice out of the region when she heard the bear let out a roar behind her. She was so surprised by the sudden noise that she too tripped over a root, resulting in a bruise on her arm.

Well away from bears, Joe did hear Will yell to try to find his comrades. As he turned his head he saw a small snake uncoil and launch itself at him. However, the creature pathetically impacted his shield, coiling up on its face and falling to the ground. It took off into the grass again before Joe could get much of a look at it, but it was clear that the clearing was not short on snakes.

Stay put, and keep yelling. I'll just get more lost if I try to walk out.

In the swamp north of Paludan...

Kyle decided to continue to try to calm the bear down, and lay on the ground to demonstrate that he was submissive to the creature. However, the bear was already enraged by this point, and only perceived this action as offering an easier target. She took her paw into the air and brought it down towards Kyle. As it was coming down Cromwell brought his sword into its path and left a deep red chasm gaping in the bears front right leg. This did little to delay the attack, however, and the bear’s full mass landed on Kyle’s arm. There was a sickening snap as the bone gave way under the weight of this large animal, leaving Kyle injured and endangered. Over this sound a distant shouting was heard, registering only briefly in the minds of the combatants…

Unaware of the continued combat with the bear, Clair decided to wait patiently with Alice for the other two to catch up. Alice finally looked up from the floor and looked up towards Clair, saying, ”I’m sorry I put you in danger... I just felt so stupid. Those are some of the first trees we’re taught to recognize. They’re one of the easiest medicines to work with, and so novices get to go out and collect Dragon’s Blood and go into the city and put it on wounds. It’s how we’re taught the value of the cures we make, we watch them work. I can’t believe I didn’t recognize them…” With that she turned away from Clair again and stared off into the swamp, only to be interrupted by a yell, from the opposite direction of the bear…

Deciding to sit still and continue to call help to him, Will continued yelling out as loud as he could, hoping help would come. This time his voice carried far enough that every one of his companions heard, but he yelled himself hoarse, a rasping pain building up in his throat till it cut his yelling off.

Joe kept his shield towards the grass and backed away slowly. He saw nothing emerge from the grass, nor even any motion within it, but he had not doubt that there was at least one snake watching his retreat. As he got far enough that he felt confident turning around he suddenly heard another shout from Will, reminding him that his partner was somewhere in the swamp, and seemingly in need of help.
