8.1 seems the most familiar to me.

Does anyone know the difference between 8.1 and Studio?

No, aside from the fact that Studio is more recent, and seems to have more major bugs

Thing looks interesting, how complicated would it be for someone with no experience with coding would this tool be?

Well,no coding except for dwarf fortress but that's easy for anyone with half a brain, but I haven't really modded dwarf fortress except for some changes here and there

One of game makers main advertised features is that you can make (simple) games entirely through dragging-and-dropping predone bits of code, so not complicated at all. GML isn't terribly difficult to work with itself, either.

People have done some incredible things with Game Maker. Most of it revolved around GML and loading images/assets based on variables (the standard drag and drop code wasn't worth a toot back in the day).

As is "Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden", despite popular misconception.

I made a 2d lawn mowing simulator with this about ...6 years ago. It was pretty cool because there were all sorts of aliens and monsters attacking you, but the objective was to mow as much of the lawn as possible.

I also made something similar to Flappy Bird about a helicopter collecting balloons, and a pacman clone about a worm being chased by birds.
Started work on a top-down zombie shooter, but never finished it.

Downloaded and tried. Aside from the horrifying first impression of the default theme being black text on dark gray, it seems to at least be intuitive. I very easily made an animated sprite with the built-in tools and put it into a 'room' to flicker annoyingly.

I remember GameMaker, did it in middle school. Its pretty limiting, but you should be able to make some decent things out of it.

With or without GML? Because i find that using GML actually eliminates the vast majority of its limitations. Drag and drop is much simpler to get into, but is indeed rather limited in what it can actually do in the long run. Many of the more powerful functions are only available if you use GML, such as creating INI files and storing data in them. With a bit of creativity though, you'd be surprised at how far you can get with the drag and drop interface.

Honestly though, Angry Laser Space is far from using the full capabilities of the engine, and we have more grand features in the works. I should once again mention Risk of Rain, Gunpoint and Hotline Miami, since i believe they are all much better and much more advanced, and are also concrete examples of Game Maker games that have become reasonably well known amongst people (all have been front paged by Steam, i believe). Yes, multiplayer is an entirely supported feature with Game Maker.

Are the tutorials worth doing, or should I just try to stop being intimidated and jump in?

It's worth checking out the first one or two just to get your bearings, but past that, i wouldn't spend too much time on it. Most of the functions are pretty intuitive, and if you do find yourself stumped, you can always check back on the tutorials and/or read the help file.

I remember one of the old versions of game maker, back when they used something else for the logo. I think it was a red ball, or something of the likes. I made a few okay games, the first that comes to mind being a game where you're santa clause trying to drop presents through people's chimneys. I only learned the drag-n-drop and it was the free version so it was super limited, but I managed. I'm gonna give this a shot, just to see how the program and I have gotten better (or worse) over the years.

I started a few projects over the years, nothing major. A "collect the objects" game, a platformer, quite a few shooters and top-down adventure games, even a magic-themed FPS. I learned some coding basics but never quite grasped how to make the program do what I wanted it to do.
