One by one, the twelve of you walk into the meeting hall.  Passing the guards at the entrance, you see that a long table has been set out, with thirteen places set.  At the head of the table sits the baron of Orbfalls, 4maskwolf.
"Ah, welcome.  Please, take your seats.  There is much to discuss, my friends."
"You see, a few days ago, one of our esteemed colleagues was struck down in an ambush in this very fortress.  Now, after deliberating on the matter for a while, I have come to a conclusion."
He stares balefully around the table, and for an instant you all feel a sense of dread as the truth sinks in.
"Three of YOU are the bastards who did it."
The hall was in uproar.  At once, every other dwarf rose to his or her feet, screaming pleas and excuses.
"SILENCE!!!!!!!" 4maskwolf roared.
At once the hall went deathly quiet.
"Thank you.  Now, join me for dinner tonight and we will discuss who we think is the traitor, shall we?

Day one has begun.  Role pms have been sent out and posts can now be made to the thread.

I'm glad to see this has started. This brings me up to four games at once  :P. Of course, I'm dead in one of them and the other one is currently inactive.

Question time!

Mastahcheese: Do you think trying to figure out the abilities of the different roles is worthwhile?

Caz: Would it ever make sense to have a hammering for anything except confirmed scum?

Persus13: If you had a jailer-type role (I'm assuming there's one here, but I'm not sure), which would be a priority: jailing to roleblock or jailing to protect?

Tiruin: Do you think that a jail sentence should ever be used in place of a beating?

Deathsword: Would it make sense to vote to hammer someone day 1?

Imperial Guardsman: Do you think that a mass role claim would ever be beneficial (meaning not simply helping scum), considering that the roles are not tied to alignment?

Tawarochir, Flabort, WhitiesOpus, and Jiokuy: You're all new to this. What do you think is the best way to find scum (meaning the bad guys)?

SuperBlackCat: What do you think of the flavor, especially the voting system?

The best way imo to find wolves - I mean scum - is to wait until day or night 2, watching for suspicious voting patterns and defense of said patterns. Forming band wagons on day 1, random voting (AKA listing random as reason) after a bandwagon has formed, or vehemently trying to stop a wagon that isn't targeted at them are all wolfish - I mean scummy - tactics.

That said, random vote Deathsword.

Deathsword: Would it make sense to vote to hammer someone day 1?
You mean lynch? (Keep in mind that hammering is an actual mafia mechanic and I actually got confused for a moment)

Lynching is the town's greatest weapon. To not use it is wasteful and gives precious time to the scum.

That said, random vote Deathsword.
Are you going to ask any questions with that vote, scum?

Mastacheese: Do you expect the larger than average newbie number will affect reads to a significant degree?

Tawarochir: If you could choose, would you rather have a protect or a kill (not both)?

Persus: What kind of RVS behaviour do you consider scummy?

No, he means hammer.  Do you remember the special lynch?  Yes, it usually means something different.  Or is that what you are answering to?

Nope, typical day 1 counter vote to a random vote. Neither implies either voter is scum to me on day 1, but if either vote forms a wagon, then in my experience on other forums, it usually turns out the one that winds up dead was not scum.

Oh. That. No, that was not what I was answering for. In that case, I'd go only for the hammer if someone plays extraordinarily scummy that day.

So you are not going to ask any questions at all? I think I'll keep my vote where it is.

Agh! Almost editid this into previous post. Need to think ahead better.

Oh, you meant am I going to ask other players questions?

Sure. I guess I can.

Darksword: Which do you think is more powerful: A villager - I mean loyalist - with nightkill, or a scum with roleblock?

Caz: If you were able to scry - I mean, rolecheck - who would you typically check first based on Day 1 votes?

Tawarochir, WhitiesOpus, and Jiokuy: As my fellow "newbies", who would you guess to be the scummiest of us four?

TheDarkStar:

The day game is generally the best way to unearth scum.
While there are many opinions on the best way to discover a "scumtell", tells are by nature ephemeral.

If there are 7 town and 3 scum, random lynching will result in about a 50-50 win rate for each party. thus scum are motivated to participate in the day game and push their agenda. (Which in this case is both not getting lynched and lynching town)

I personally will be watching player reactions. If the reactions strongly support the lynching of town, or overly support another non-confirmed player, I will suspect them.

In general, during the day the town can pressure a scum into making a mistake and speaking truthfully (e.g. failing to hide support of a player, however one must be careful (noobs are bad at avoiding scum tells, I was nearly lynched my first game for defending a player [was town]))

flabort: Well two of us have not posted yet, you seem to be actively scum hunting. I'll get back to you before night.

Mastahcheese: you were excited for the game to start, but you have not posted yet. Are you afraid your Scumyness will show?

Darksword: Aside from a second NK, what do you think the strongest Scum ability would be?

Before, I've used Jailkeeper as a roleblock, but that was in a game where there was only one scum remaining. I'd probably use it as a protect when there are more than one scum player alive.

Persus: What kind of RVS behaviour do you consider scummy?
Being way too aggressive for something that isn't really scummy.

Jiokuy: Haven't seen you around at all, how much experience do you have?

Tawarochir, Flabort, WhitiesOpus, and Jiokuy: You're all new to this. What do you think is the best way to find scum (meaning the bad guys)?

I would say the best thing to look for is people who are very, very selective in casting their lynch vote, and seem to avoid casting it on certain people. As well as unlikely to change it. That's what I've observed in some of the games I've read, at least.

Tawarochir, WhitiesOpus, and Jiokuy: As my fellow "newbies", who would you guess to be the scummiest of us four?

I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to start pointing fingers at one of us already. If we're noobs to this, how can we measure who's the scummiest?

question tiem

TDS: You seem experienced at this game. What do you think is the best way to find scum? Who're your current suspects, even if it's so early in the game?

deathsword: You didn't ask me a question. Is there some reason you hadn't? ARE YOU HIDING SOMETHING?!? :P

flabort: Why are you so quick to make someone slip into such an easy trap? What do you think are the qualities of scum?

Persus13: The last game I played on this board was around May of 12'. I have played a bit on other forums since then, and I've kept up with the games. I am reasonably skilled in theory, but I've only played with an insular group. Bay12 has a few different "unwritten rules" concerning scummyness ect.
In short, Intermediate skill is a reasonable assumption. I should play well, but I might slip (not in so much a scummy way, but in a not used to this meta way (e.g. defending another player is very much not a good idea here (Slows down the hunt, prevents an accurate read)))
That said, I'm really bad at making RVS questions. The data is invaluable, but It's just difficult to find the right questions.

Hahaha, so I originally wrote Deathsword, but I checked my post against the post above mine and hastily corrected it.

Persus12Nonlethal lynchings allow the town to flip loyalty/confirm without killing, however if they flip scum it delays their execution. As 1/4 of the players are scum this game, and the scum still get a kill each night, around how many beatings do you think we can afford to give out before we reach lylo?

Wherein this consequence lies in 'Show us where your honor lies and face the wall for this set amount of time'?
One turn or two.
Quote
Voting for who to "lynch" proceeds as usual.  However, upon day end, the game enters a special "twilight" phase.  The twilight phase lasts 24 hours, or until I have all of the votes for choice of punishment.  The votes are secret, and the thread will be locked during both the twilight and night phases.
There are three choices for punishment: a beating (flips loyalty and removes the player from the game for a turn), jail sentence (flips loyalty and removes the player from the game for two turns), and hammering (death, and loyaltyflip as an aside).  Absence for a turn means missing the immediately following night and the next day night cycle, absence for two turns removes the player from the game for the next night and the next two day night cycles.  While removed from the game, the player cannot be targeted and cannot post in the thread or any chats they may be in.
But I don't fully understand it (though I do vote in favor of a jail sentence as a T1 [twilight 1?] deal and either Beating/Hammering later on) because from what I see, the lack of one turn = absence for a full day, wherein day = day, twilight, night.

So no, not much. The Jail sentence equals an absence of 2 whole turns, which means if one was sentenced this twilight, s/he'd appear on D4, if I'm not mistaken. Given the 13/3 setup and assuming that nobody votes for hammering..and the hammer isn't a vigilante given this context, we lose 2 people each day (lynch/NK), and a D4 note seems like a very possible thing, regardless of other factors.

...So yeah.

While I do notice you didn't mention any specific time (and ask why you didn't), I'd also say why do you ask my opinion about my vote ahead of time-what will that do for you?

Caz: Would it ever make sense to have a hammering for anything except confirmed scum?
Yeah, though I'm not sure 100% on the logistics. If town only gets to either lynch or jail (with roles revealed on both) and we jail one of the scum, we basically wasted a lynch and the town has to wait until the next day, while scum on the other hand can kill each night. It's better than lynching a townie but only marginally so. What I'm not sure on is how to decide who we are hammering or not. I don't think we should lynch on day 1. Most often they flip town, but we can still get a roleflip in this way. Do we go for hammering confirmed only and jail the rest, or what? How would you think on this situation?

Persus13:
Are we still doing RV? Does that even scare anyone anymore?

Caz: If you were able to scry - I mean, rolecheck - who would you typically check first based on Day 1 votes?
Anyone who felt off to me. If I had failed to get so much as that, I'd probably check one of the more experienced players to know whether I could trust them.

MastahCheese - When looking for scum, are there any particular behaviours that stand out to you as a tell? Would you reveal these immediately or wait to gather more information?

TheDarkStar - Do you get nervous when you are voted by more than one person?

Persus13 - Do you think newbies in the game make it more difficult to hunt correctly?

Deathsword - What kind of questions do you find are most useful in the RVS?

Most definitely. I can point to several different games as evidence. However, most of them seem like they have a good idea of how to play.
