I doubt, at least for the start, I'm going to take enough damage to kill me straight off. Do we need to explicitly carry healing items or are they always available?

Potions need to be explicitly carried. And yeah, for now you're fine. just wait until the action conflicts start playing up and you have to choose between healing and fixing broken walls :P
