The mere fact a group is comprised mostly of people with Big Trait Y and you have Big Trait X makes it unappealing.
FTFY. Also, I really don't notice any sexism/homo-/trans-/blankphobia around here, except when people talk explicitly about these issues in the politics threads...

Mostly I don't feel sexism on these boards. I did think there were more women around, but maybe they're not so much on the lower boards? Or maybe they're just very active, at least in the threads I follow, so it seems like there's more of them than there are. I don't think there is any pressure for women to not admit they play these games. I have plenty of female friends who are gamers, always have. It never would have occurred to me that I'm not "supposed" to play a game like this. But maybe I'm in the minority.

There was one time I felt uncomfortable here, though. I posted in the sad thread that I had been sexually harassed by the drunk father of one of my students and it really freaked me out, and I had almost no support. Several people told me that these things just happen, I'm a girl, I should deal with it, etc. It really surprised me, as I assumed this place was far more understanding and accepting than that. That was the first time I realized how many of the forumgoers were male, and how young most of them are...

It's a little strange to be so far over the median age as well. I've been around the forums since you young'ns were in grade school! Apparently.

Oh gosh, there is more people listed in 'other' than in 'female'. I'm not sure what to say about that.

I'm not as surpised about the male/female ratio. More about the low median age. Thanks for making me feel old, kiddos!  ;D

Sappho: You might just have hit a bad day. Someone else posted something like that recently, and you could smell the pitchforks.

This causes a cascade effect where the forums are more and more of a "boys club" so women are more and more uncomfortable joining.

But I dont think this forum is hostile.  Like at all?
I don't see a lot of deliberate sexism or hostility here, but it does feel really uncomfortable and unwelcoming somehow (which is why I hardly ever post).

Plus this kind of stuff.

Unfortunately, yes, this is still a minority view, and there's still substantial social pressure on people to act in accordance with prescribed roles.

Well there is at least one elder horror (and I'm half one meself on me mom's side), and quite a few that don't seem to give a damn.

This actually surprises me. I've read worse in the sad thread and people were generally supportive.

I don't think I've ever actually felt uncomfortable here over gender. I mean I've felt angry at other people for saying things that I felt were sexist before, but I haven't really felt unwelcome because of my gender myself.

To be honest I feel more uncomfortable here over the dwarf worship that goes on sometimes since I fucking hate fantasy dwarves. But I understand given the name of the board and original premise of the game it's based around that it's gonna be a thing.

If I remember right, the post that got me the most angry though was something about drinking from someone I don't remember. Something like implying that women can be present around when guys are drinking so long as they shut up. I might of misread or misremembered though as I've admittedly only been in my right mind for maybe the greater part of half a year now. Though this is a preeetty big reason I usually stick with socializing online now, I have a massive temper and a short fuze. And I am definitely rather strong by most standards, and I'm actually genuinely terrified while out that I might hurt someone when I don't mean to.

Gender is just a statistic on a forum. It's not going to affect how people respond to you, etc.
That being said, I'm a bit shocked at the gender result and now I'm wondering how I came to stay here as opposed to typical women who enjoy video games (and also happen to forum).

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was mafia that had me stick around and then you guys grew on me. To be honest though, roguelikes have always been a guilty pleasure of mine and Dwarf Fortress is no exception.

You all glossed over an important fact.

There are more cat lovers than dog lovers here.

I was upset there was no "both" option.

Both are fluffy and adorable~!

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
