Darvi: I collapsed the columns (removed all blank cells) and shuffled them. That's why it'll look different.
... also, the columns might be wrong. I'll have to look at them tomorrow >___<

The two answers I discarded were, respectively, from an elf living in Bree hailing from Mirkwood, and a Time Traveler hailing from 2057 who hails from the Western something something. I hope you're proud of yourselves for submitting joke answers to a serious survey.

I expect it's because most people answered according to what genitalia they have.

I'm not sure gender-ignorance accounts for much, seeing as how most people are cis-gender and those of us who aren't know as much.

I'm personally confused why some of you are so surprised with the gender skewing. The bay 12 fourms are practically generic nerd subculture: The board. And that's a mostly male demographic.

While nerds tend a little to be male, 5% female surprises me.  This forum seems to be free of a lot of the sexism that other game forums have.

They're interchangeable terms!

This forum seems to be free of a lot of the sexism that other game forums have.
It still has some. Though I personally think it's because the Dwarf Fortress is seen as a masculine game.

I'd expect similar demographics at say, a monster truck rally or a professional wrestling match, even if all the sexism of the audience was somehow stripped away.

But...but...I hate monster truck rallies and wrestling :C

But seriously, Dwarf Fortress really is a masculine game if you think about it. Even the female dwarves are enacting manly dwarven stereotypes.

if both women and men are the same kind of manly, does it not make the manly stereotype a gender-neutral stereotype and effectively liberate dwarven society from sexism?

we should all strive to be a little more like dwarves.

...haha that statement smells like tumblr disregard it entirely

That was my way of saying "because most users are cis-gendered males".

Further hypothesis from the wife:

The game is seen as masculine, but that doesn't keep women from playing it, just letting other people know they play it. This survey was one of the forum base, not the players of Toady's games. A women might want to play the game, but it would be somehow socially unacceptable for others to know that, so she stays away from public places relating to it.

This causes a cascade effect where the forums are more and more of a "boys club" so women are more and more uncomfortable joining.

The mere fact a group is comprised mostly of people with Big Trait X and you have Big Trait Y makes it unappealing.

Substitute the "big traits" with anything our culture focuses way too much on, like race, ethnicity, etc, and it will be just as true for most people.

We do have 5% women here, so it's obviously not something that discourages everyone. Just most.

I find it a bit sad that more people listed their gender as other than those who listed their's as female.

Also, can you tell us how many joke responses were given and maybe show what they were?
