i recently got  dead space as a generous gift through a gift drive, ( thank you aavak and donors), but it will not work. i installed it on my computer through steam, but it doesn't open. it goes to a black screen, then it shows me an error message. i am running a windows XP computer. if anyone knows how to fix the problem, please let me know.

Yeah, without a few details, we can't help much.

While you're at it, though, post your PC specs. GPU/CPU/RAM would be a good start. If you're drastically off the system reqs, it could explain the immediate black screen.

Did you try taking the cartridge out and blowing on it?

Don't do that, you'll just corrode the pins.

I'm going to guess this is the cause.  The fact that it's a computer running Windows XP makes me suspicious that it's probably very old and has a video card that doesn't support the game.  Or it's even possible that Dead Space itself won't work with Windows XP.
