Lesan cleared his throat. Hoo boy, he had not been looking forward to this. "Uh, well, it's not like- What I mean is- Um. I, uh, like girls just fine, it's just that... You make me intensely uncomfortable." Sweat was beginning to bead on Lesan's forehead. He tugged on the collar of his jacket, which suddenly seemed very tight to him."It's, uh, not a personal thing. Just... For some reason, I get this way around, uh, girls."

Sophie looked up at Lesan as he commented on her state of dress... looked down, and then put her face in her hands.
:"...in the desert..."
She-- she hadn't ever picked them up off of the sand.

Kat listened patiently when Lesan started talking and surprisingly took no offense. Then again, she was used to making people uncomfortable by sheer virtue of being a witch, so...

"Well, there's probably a reason for it. All we gotta do is figure out what it is!"

Katerina nodded to herself.

"Well, you can always make a start by looking at me. We'll leave Sophie and her state of dress or undress for next time."

"Well? Are we drunk enough to reminisce about old battles yet? Or is everybody else too scared thinking about what could be behind the gates? You've all gone quiet on me," she says after glaring at everyone for a couple seconds.

"I thought you didn't believe in the gates? Granted, I was skeptical as well, but I fought against a several-century old undead sorcerer not too long ago, so... anything is possible, I suppose.

Maiya sighed. "Oh, that little encounter wasn't very fun, I'll be honest. Before you all showed up, the captain thought that letting us get surrounded was a good idea. Make it faster for us to cut them down in droves."

"He overestimated his troop's ability just a bit."

"Ah, you mistake me. I still think that the gates are a load of crap. Junk that a bunch of peasants made up to feel better about themselves. But apparently I'm the only one that thinks that way."

"Was your leader really that stupid? If I was in his situation I probably would have run myself, but if I had to stay and fight then getting surrounded wouldn't be on the top of my list of things to try. When you're outnumbered like this you gotta stay mobile, else you'll get swarmed to death. Ah, but listen to me talk. You probably know all of this already. And experienced it too, apparently. Though now I'm curious as to how you managed to win, since the place wasn't crawling with the dead when he got here."

"You were the one who went quiet all of a sudden. Start talkin', then. Did ya get hired by Even recently or do you have something of a history?"

:"...in the desert..."

"You could check things with Even." Lycan pointed out. "He may've found it and even if he didn't notice it was yours, he would've decided to bag it and sell it later."

Maiya sighed. "He overestimated his troop's ability just a bit."

"That ain't too brilliant. Did you have at least some knights to hold the line?"

"I didn't notice you talking either, so shut up. And yeah, I have a bit of history."

"Just not with Even, thankfully. I got hired by him not too long before we met up. He said that the work and money was supposed to be good, and I guess it is. I still can't stand the guy though. What about you? You were a merc before you got dragged into this little group, right?"

Vandertz crossed his arms and shook his head a few times at all of that.

"Well, if you don't believe in the Gates, I am sure you won't mind if we get the percentage you were going to receive, right? At this point I am surprised someone still doesn't believe something important is behind those gates."
"I mean, we were being chased by some demon priest, and he was sending everything at us to get the key. So at least power might be something we can find there."

"Ya should decide whether you want me talking or shuttin' up already. Maybe it's the mead talkin'." Lycan shot back humorously.

"Yeah, mostly took jobs dealin' with highwaymen and other bandits. Some escorting too."

"That doesn't mean anything. I've been disappointed one too many times in my life to take promises of treasure at face value. If they turn out to be true I'll still get my share anyways. And if they're false or something else entirely, then I won't be disappointed. From where I'm standing it's pretty win-win for me. Especially with all of the money we've been making getting here."

"Besides, promises of nondescript power? That sounds pretty fishy to me. Is there actually something specific behind the gates besides old wives' tales?"

"Yeah, mostly took jobs dealin' with highwaymen and other bandits. Some escorting too."

"Must have been pretty comfy job then, nothing to worry about for miles around," Kaarina says, trying to keep herself from laughing at the irony and not doing a very good job at it. "Ah geez, I don't know what's gotten over me. I'm sounding like a wet-behind-the-ears maiden at a county fair here. I'd blame the booze if I still wasn't on my second cup. It ain't that strong."

"We used the armory - well, those of us that got inside. We pretty much took what we needed, then overwhelmed anything that tried to come through the front. It was quite literally the opposite of mobile, but it worked surprisingly well. And as for knights... well, a few of us had heavier armor, but the actual knights only showed up until much later, when the worst had already passed."

Maiya took a quick sip, then addressed Vandertz.

"Speaking of the Gates... if I recall correctly, you only have a single piece of the key. With all of this confidence about opening the Gates, I'm assuming you already know where all the other pieces are?"

"Hiding somewhere or slowed down?" Armored like he was Lycan knew marching around in, or even transporting, heavy armor wasn't that easy.

"Most of the escortin' jobs were pretty calm, yeah. Anythin' with the bandits or military was trouble." Lycan laughed heartily at Kaarina's remark about her own behavior after he took another gulp from his mug. "At least we're relaxing and having a good time after all that sand and heat, so no worries."

"Ah..." Kaarina waves a hand dismissively until she gets her laughter under control.

"There we go... It wasn't even that funny to begin with, don't worry about it. Though I am rather curious right now, where are you from? Or where have you spent most of your time escorting caravans. I want to see closely we could have met."

"I said some escorting, not that most my time was spent on it." he explained, hoping to clarify that one small mistake.

"I was born near the central region of Terrania, in a village surrounded by forest. Started doing small work for a neighboring village and started travellin' after that, sometimes with other mercs."

"Yeah, but travelling around where? Terrania is a big place if you haven't noticed. I've spent a good chunk of my life in it but that doesn't mean we could have been anywhere near each other. What part of the country, east? West? Or are you one of the types that wants to go everywhere and see everything?"
