Grimm backed away rather quickly as his brother's new pet giant lumbered over and relieved him of his horse.
The mild scowl he flashed at Arcus suggested that perhaps he hadn't factored that into his plans, but he quickly re-focused his attention on the discussion at hand and, perhaps more importantly, these two fine creatures his brother Wallace had sourced from somewhere, Gods know how. He cast a surreptitious glance downwards, checking over his fine new armour for any traces of dirt or muck it might have acquired in the few minutes he'd been wearing it.

Having satisfied himself that there was no overly-obvious manure stuck to any of his shiny surfaces, the well-armoured, dashing (in his mind, at least) young prince stepped forward to add his own few coins to the discussion- namely, by loudly deriding the arguments of both his siblings and their retainers.

"I must ask, Don," He drawled, his crested shield hanging from one hand as he smirked at the younger of Wallace's mercenaries, "Which of thy tutors was it that taught you to take strategic advice from a girl? Certainly, the orcs are raiders, anyone can see as much- but to credit them with that sort of sense is to give the dumb brutes far too much credit. They'll see our beloved Foghaunt razed to the ground and its people devoured just so soon as enough of them can share the same thought process simultaneously."

Looking rather pleased with his speech, he then turned towards Wilril, his expression souring somewhat as he prepared to speak to his mad brother.
"A lovely rhyme, Wilril. Who knew you were so musically inclined? Now, might you actually have ought of worth to add to the conversation, or would that be alike to asking a duck to take up arms and defend the kingdom?" He raised an eyebrow.
'I am glad for the few soldiers we have along, at least. I would not have liked to face down a horde of orcs with only my daft brothers for company.'

-snip-
Arcus, after his younger borther is done with his little speech, speaks up in a mocking, whiny voice. "Yeah, why do you listen to girls Don? Only boys are allowed in my special little club, girls are icky!"  He then looks at Percy and assumes an authoritive voice. "Percival Grimmeth Fogeye, you are a spoiled child and a fool. I am very glad indeed that there are three of us before you in line for the throne.

I mean really, you simply dismiss the information of someone who's job it is to do these kinds things? But no, I suppose the great Ser Percy, who has lived his entire behind the safety of the castle walls with everything he could want for provided is the true expert on this topic. So, please, do enlighten me, what makes you think that this bunch of savage brutes who have never worked together since the day we've known of them will suddenly band together to destroy our home?"

Grimm bristled at that, but caught himself before any outburst, took a deep breath and then answered Arcus in as calm a tone as he could manage.
"So, were it left up to you, we would base our plans to save the kingdom entirely on the word of some two-bit sellsword we've only just met, hmm? He glanced towards the younger mercenary briefly, shrugged, then looked back to his despised brother. "I tell you, brother, you're not the only one who's glad I'm not the heir-- with thick-headed folk such as yourself peopling the kingdom, I'd not want any part in ruling it, believe you me."

He paused a moment, then went on. He spoke more towards the rest of the group now, rather than Arcus.
"I cannot say for sure which foe we should set out to combat first, myself. All are dangerous, of that we are certain. Orcs simply seem more... familiar than most of the others, by which I mean they have more-or-less the same shape as a man and the same methods can generally be used to kill them." He absently wipes a fleck of dung off a plate of his leg-armour, then adds, his tone dripping with sarcasm, "I suppose I had best leave it up to my older, wiser brothers to decide which manner of foul beast they would rather die to."
With that he goes silent, listening to any further discussion with his shield propped against his leg.

Arcus, not even trying to contain his anger (he had never done so anyway) was no longer using his indoor voice now. "Why yes, Percy, I would take the word of a professional mercenary as truth, on this matter. And if it were left up to me, Percy, we would send an actual damned army, actual professionals to solve these problems. Instead of sitting back and sending off my ill-adjusted children to do my dirty work for me.

And may I remind you, Percy , that these two-bit sellswords are here to protect us and help us? You may just want to how a modicum of respect. Though I suppose you've always had a bit of a superiority complex."

Don, noting his two physically inclined brothers start to get into it, shambles on over to Wilril

Wilril? Looks like our brothers are getting a bit hotheaded. Maybe they need some ice between them to cool off? A tiny localized snowstorm maybe?

((BACKFIRE POTENTIAL: EXTREME, but SOMEONE has to stop the argument :P))

Wallace, who had quietly been observing the argument of his brothers, cleared his throat.

"I am certainly no warrior, nor would I claim to know tactics or strategy therein.  That said, I do understand that we are here to work together by command of our father, the King.  If we argue here in our own city, surely it bodes ill for when we are away in the..." - here, he looked out toward the gates.  He guessed there were probably trees and animals and perhaps dirt out there.  "...outer areas.  We must handle all four plagues in due course- perhaps an equitable solution would be to cast lots?"

Wallace was not for leaving things to chance as a rule, but this method had defused several tense situations in the past- there's no reason it should not work here.  Another fair solution would be to lead it to the eldest involved, but that would be Wilril.  He was a bit... unpredictable.  Unstable.  Eh.

Despite his best efforts to control himself, Prince Grimm had gritted his teeth with rage as Arcus began to raise his voice, and had just clenched his hands into fists ready for gods-know-what when Wallace spoke up, seemingly snapping him out of it.

"Yes," he blurted out, pivoting on the spot to face his less anger-inducing older brother, sending his new shield clattering to the ground with the motion, "That indeed does sound rather agreeable, given that none of us possess the firsthand knowledge to make an informed decision on the matter."
He seemed rather glad for the distraction more than anything, truth be told. With that, he quickly stooped to grab up his shield from where it fell, and busied himself with meticulously wiping the dirt from it as he calmed himself down.

See if I have some method of picking names out of a hat.  If so, pick between the four Plagues and suggest we go that way.

Arcus throws up his arm in the air as a sign of surrender. "Yes, fine, let's leave it up to chance. Not like it's going to matter al that much anyway."

Still somewhat riled up at his younger brother, he turns toward Jum. "So, Jum, anything we still need to get before we set off? Anything you in particular would like? Don't be shy, being in the employ of a Fogeye should have its benefits, after all."

Converse with Jum, Wait for others to decide where to go

At the town square of Foghaunt...

"So, it would seem the Orcs are not the most immediate threat. They seem practically reasonable compared to the other three. Perhaps... perhaps they could even be persuaded to become allies against the other threats? If they desire resources so, it would clearly benefit them to have more to steal if nothing else... But that would only be a short term solution... anyway, the other threats are more pressing, what information do we have on those?"

"I must ask, Don. Which of thy tutors was it that taught you to take strategic advice from a girl? Certainly, the orcs are-"

So boring!

"-corpse that's not ash will be back in a flash!"

"A lovely rhyme, Wilril. Who knew you were so musically inclined? Now, might you actually-"

Poike guessed it was too much to expect a bunch of royalty to actually have any gods-damned idea what they were going to do until the very last possible moment. The planning stage of any given endeavor was his least favorite thing of all. It was always just people telling each other what to do, and nothing else. Even reconnaissance was a better use of his time. Poike nearly spit at the thought, but then recalled that some of these crazy bastards might just be the types to stab people in the gullet for that kind of thing.

"-please, do enlighten me, what makes you think that this bunch of savage brutes who have never worked together since the day we've known of them will suddenly band together-"

It was hard to not listen as intensely as Poike did, but he was certainly very practiced at it. Why, he didn't even have any true idea what the current topic of conversation was. And he liked it that way, because details were not something he cared about overmuch. He was sure it would all come to him when the time was right - failing that, Kerrh would elaborately explain it tonight whether he wanted him to or not, then simplify as needed. And he'd probably be able to tell what to stab regardless of what anybody here said - these things tended to be obvious when one was facing off against stuff like orcs or whatever.

Truly, among the reasons to join the palace guard, excitement was not one. But he was on the path to rectifying that particular problem. And maybe on the path to glory and riches as well. It remained to be seen.

...

Oh gods, why wasn't anything-oh, wait. The little guy was walking over that way. Poike followed ponderously for a moment before he realized where they were going - right over to the wizard guy (Kerrh kept telling Poike that he should remember who all these assholes were, but Poike insisted on not doing that and mostly just remembered them by their faces - it was easy, because all of them looked kind of stupid to him). And the wizard guy was next to the accountant guy. And the accountant guy, why, he was next to this armored broad. It was hard to see, but Poike got the impression she was okay-looking under that helm, and, having no better distractions, he went for it, taking a discreet step over to her and whispering softly. "Hey. Hey. Hey."

The broad turned to look at him, and replied with a flat, quiet "What?"

"How're you doing?" Poike asked, not really sure if there was some special code of conduct you had to observe to talk to she-mercenaries.

"Very well," she answered, turning back to all the boring talking, and the man was at a bit of a loss on what to ask. Maybe seek common ground?

"So, I see you've killed something this morning," he subtly mentioned, pointing at her axe. The broad just sighed and nodded. "How was it?" he continued, and she just stared at him, looking unusually tired. Poike never did know where to take a conversation once it had reached this point. He had much to learn of social graces, he thought, which was too bad, because doing exactly that was very low on his priority list. The awkward silence that ensued, fortunately, was broken by one of the royal monkeys coming up with a solution, and said royal monkey was close enough for Poike to actually kinda hear what he was saying.

"-perhaps an equitable solution would be to cast lots?" the accountant guy finished what must have been an eloquent address to his idiot brothers. His proposal was a stroke of genius, clearly. Let the gods decide what mere royalty can't. Turning away from the lottery guy, he turned back to the broad.

"Am I really the only one here who's this close to just stabbing somebody to mix things up a bit?" he asked in a low voice of her. She looked him right in the eye blankly for a moment, then nodded slowly before turning back to her oh-so-beloved. She pretty clearly didn't like him much. Probably didn't like men in general. In fact, she probably went for guys like that accountant guy over there. Poike began to resent the prince a little. He bet if he was a prince, this broad would pay attention to him. All the broads would, he bet. Too bad he couldn't become one without popular support, and he didn't see how he'd get that. Maybe after he became a hero or whatever.

Suddenly, she took off her helmet. The broad had chosen to crop her hair kind of closely. And she really was kind of okay-looking. Poike examined her face, quite expressionless and gentle, as she offered her helmet to the accountant guy, who had neglected to bring any hats to pick lots out of and was probably too chickenshit to ask the big-hatted wizard guy. The lottery was soon underway, and the matter of where they would go was, Poike hoped, indisputably resolved when the accountant guy finally, after closing his eyes, drew a lot and read it out loud.

"South - dragons," he declared, and a bit of noise rose among the group. Tired of looking at the broad, Poike glanced around for anything of interest, and noticed Jum, who was twirling his pike idly when the asshole prince asked him something.

"So, Jum, anything we still need to get before we set off? Anything you in particular would like? Don't be shy, being in the employ of a Fogeye should have its benefits, after all."

What could Jum have possibly wanted? He was Jum, for gods' sakes. His brain had probably boiled in that helmet of his years ago.

"I'm good. If I had more stuff, it'd be hard to walk around too easily."

Well, it seemed like things were moving along, which suited Poike just fine. Maybe they could go shoot down some dragons. Get themselves some high-priced leather.

Wallace nodded slowly.  Simple enough, and another conflict avoided.  Hopefully this whole mess could be dealt with the same way.

"Very well.  If there is anything particularly well suited to dealing with dragons before we set off, shall we acquire it?"

He looked at his brothers as he said this.

Wilril nods quickly but inquisitively, speaking slowly.

"Dragons?! What strange creatures! Scales harder than steel, flames hotter than a forge, faster than an arrow in flight- What majestic beasts! Quite the foe indeed to myself, if my knowledge presents itself, dragons cannot be killed by fire- But I suppose, neither can wizards!"

Wilril cackles a bit maniacally before allowing his more diplomatically gifted brothers to speak.

When his brother announced what they would be facing, the only thought that consistently popped into Don's head was very simple.

He was gonna ride a dragon.

With a simply uncharacteristic grin on his face, Don looked to the various guards and mercenaries that had been assembled So, I don't suppose any of you have fought one of the lizards before? I think it would be good to find some kind of survivors of their attacks, that way we can get a better idea of how to fight them, where to set traps and such.
