Wilril appears before the king in his usual shoddy robes, a tinge of green with a big silly hat to complete the outfit. His face is cracked with stress or age or something other, and he looks truly like an old wizard in the dull lighting of the foyer.

"Ah, father, how my soul burned to know of the day when you call upon a Fool to do the work of a Knight!"

Wilril cackles at the thought, and you think maybe you saw sparks fly from his open mouth.

Wallace wrinkled his small pug nose.  It wasn't that he was ugly, per se, but that plus his practically nonexistent chin prevented anyone from mistaking him for someone worth anything in a fight.

"Father, I will do as you ask.  But you mention the army; do you expect us to... fight these things?  Violence may be the art of my brother Percy, but surely you do not expect me to go out in the... forests and swamps, do you?"

Wallace was not a coward, but he was quite content staying in his office managing money, thank you very much.  It usually did was it was told and never made a mess.

((Note- Wallace calls Percy by his given name without a touch of sarcasm or insult- he just calls him that because it's his name.  Similarly, he never refers to himself as Wally, but some of the kingspawn do.))

Momentarily stunned by what he was hearing- stunned in a good way, having such importance placed upon him by his usually cruel father- Percy dropped respectfully to one knee before the throne, bowing his head and clasping a fist solemnly to his puffed-out chest.

"I'd be glad to, father," he said, then paused to consider what heroic-sounding words would best suit the occasion before continuing, "The safety of thy Kingdom could hardly be in better hands. Whither shall we set forth? Where dost these enemies most foul reside, that I might plant my sword in them?
Speaking of, I mustn't forget to acquire said sword before we leave..."

In the throne room of Castle Fogeye...

King Ingmar was feeling pretty good about himself right now. His children, shut-ins that they were, had hardly any clout or bravery to oppose him with. They would become real men yet, he thought. Arcus had not objected in any way beyond a mumble, so his authority was probably somewhat respected despite his very long absence. The king stroked his beard thoughtfully for a moment, looking at the rest of his children.

"Ah, father, how my soul burned to know of the day when you call upon a Fool to do the work of a Knight!" Wilril suddenly said. King Ingmar never really could get a grip on the way he talked. It creeped him out a little.

"Mm-hm, that's very nice, Wilril. Be good now, you hear?" he said, trying to end any beginnings of conversation between himself and his strangest offspring.

Wallace, naturally, had some objections as well.

"Father, I will do as you ask.  But you mention the army; do you expect us to... fight these things?  Violence may be the art of my brother Percy, but surely you do not expect me to go out in the... forests and swamps, do you?"

What a silly kid Wallace was, Ingmar thought. He would surely have fun out there.

"Of course I expect you to go out there in the forests and swamps to fight the Plagues. Maybe not leading the assault or anything, but presumably doing something heroic. Nobody respects an accountant, Wally. You have to attain some prestige to ever have any hope of attaining proper lordship."

Percy, who seemed to Ingmar as the one least likely to have problems with this sort of thing, did not fail his father, much to his delight.

"I'd be glad to, father," he said, then pauses. "The safety of thy Kingdom could hardly be in better hands. Whither shall we set forth? Where dost these enemies most foul reside, that I might plant my sword in them? Speaking of, I mustn't forget to acquire said sword before we leave..."

"Really, any cardinal direction works. There are threats on all sides, and all are of equal priority. So it is up to you to decide which you shall tackle first."

Don, meanwhile, had drawn a little closer to him. King Ingmar wondered if he was about to be hugged. That would be very awkward. Fortunately, Don started speaking immediately, sparing the king any grief or effort over any fatherly activity that might ensue.

[Don's speechcraft roll: 7+3]

"So, dad, you will ostensibly be doing more magical research while we are gone," Don stated in his characteristic .

"Yes, actually, and not just ostensibly, either," the king answered, slightly interested in where his son might be going with this.

"What sort of research?" he asked. "Enchantments, yes?" was the immediate follow-up.

"Um, yes," King Ingmar answered. Was Don showing interest? It was hard to tell with him. He briefly wondered if it wouldn't have been preferable for him to go for a hug instead.

"I am slightly curious about the subject. Can you elaborate a little?" Don continued mercilessly. Little guy was unreadable, Ingmar had to give his mother that.

"Well, it is very complex work, of course, and I would not want to bore you with the details..."

"Manifold manipulation, was it?" Don shot back without inflection, which piqued the king's interest. Where had he heard of that?

"Of a sort, yes... it's a bit difficult to explain, but..."

"You're trying to improve the single-strand ensorcelling method, right? It seems that's been a popular issue lately."

Now the king was feeling a tad insulted. Did his son really think so little of him? He needed a little reminder on who was the top sorcerer here, obviously.

"Oh, no. Of course not! Nothing so plebeian as what those other hacks are trying, I assure you. You can't actually improve the single-strand method! That's just people being stupid. No, I'm working on something different. A new method, shall we say."

"A new method?"

"Yes! I am making definite headway on it, actually. Once I get it into working shape, I assure you that it will cause quite the uproar in the magical community, and possibly beyond. In fact, I dare say that what I'm doing is about to change Allochthon in a way not dissimilar to Heer Fogeye's work all those years ago. It's very exciting, and I do wish I could share more of my work with you, but it does get highly... technical. And difficult for an uninitiated mind to follow," Ingmar tried to impress his son, but it didn't seem to be quite working. He then briefly wondered why he wanted to impress Don of all people. It's not like he could properly understand the king's business at his age. And magic was probably just some interesting diversion to him. He also thought about what Don might be playing at here.

"That does sound rather impressive," Don admits, and once again the king found himself doubting the motives of the boy. Maybe he really was interested, and was just emotionally stunted? His family did have the tendency to be very... interesting in that way.

And while doing all of all this wondering, doubting and thinking, he scarcely thought to look over at one of the display cases on the left side of the room, from which Arcus had just liberated a very nice-looking ceremonial gold-patterned steel horseman's pick and stuck it in his spacious, pocket-rich coat in a surreptitious manner.

Wilril stands for a moment, hearing the same reply from his father as he always does, but keeping the same simple look of childlike satisfaction nonetheless. Just after everyone finishes talking, he claps his hands together loudly- uncomfortably loudly, really- and begins to speak again.

"Well, brothers! The Plagues will not simply cease to exist simply by us standing here, now will they? Off at once!"

He throws his robed arms up to the skies and attempts his "usual disappearing act."

By which, of course, means gulping some random elixir from inside of his robes and hoping it causes him to disappear.

"As you say, Father," Percy figures it couldn't hurt to remind the King of his preferred name just now, "I, Grimm Grimmeth Fogeye shan't fail you."
With that he turns and strides out, feeling rather pleased with himself.
He stops and turns towards his siblings, making a vague gesture as he speaks, aiming for a stern tone of voice.
"One of you, go find me a horse. Have it saddled and waiting at the East gate, I shall go arm myself meanwhile."

>Order my useless siblings to go find me a horse.

>Then stride out like a boss and go to the smithy and see what weapons and armour he has on display.

Edit: >Scowl over my shoulder at Arcus.

Wallace sighed.  Ugh.  He supposed he could keep the books of his brothers and help them keep track of their finances while they did the dirty work.  Well, this sounded like a valid use of the petty cash...

"I will go, Father."  He bowed and left in the polite manner.

See if I can "borrow" some cash from the family finances before meeting the rest.

MOAR DISTRACTION!
Well father, I certainly won't claim your knowledge of the finer points, but if your accomplishments are as great as those of our forebear then myself and my brothers may not have to worry about one of the plagues. Or at the very least save it for last. So it would certainly do well to know the outline of what you have achieved and what threat it will vanquish.

((I like how I've immediately found use in the party as the official distraction generator. If this keeps up the four plagues will just be too busy navigating Dons wordplay to worry about terrorizing humanity :P))

putting away his loot, Arcus turns towards his siblings.

"Well, brothers! The Plagues will not simply cease to exist simply by us standing here, now will they? Off at once!"
"Unfortunately, it seems that for once Wilril is right on the money. The sooner we get these things over with, the sooner we can go back to our own business."

"One of you, go find me a horse. Have it saddled and waiting at the East gate, I shall go arm myself meanwhile."
Arcus' eyebrow goes up in suprise and he strokes his beard sagely.
"My dear Percy, though it warms my heart that you are trying to fake some semblance of a spine, you seem forget that you are the second youngest of the group. Besides, I think that amongst all of us the most qualified to find us suitable horses would be you. Be a dear and go secure us all some of those loathsome creatures whose company you seem to enjoy so much."

If it's time to preapre to leave, go to my study and gather some usefull things. Alchemy supplies and medical supplies most importantly

In the throne room of Castle Fogeye...

The king was about to continue his conversation with Don, and was actually in the middle of a rather complicated first word when he was somewhat rudely interrupted, though that was probably not his intention, by Wilril.

"Well, brothers! The Plagues will not simply cease to exist simply by us standing here, now will they? Off at once!" the loopiest of the kingspawn proclaimed, then threw up his arms. The king always got a little nervous when he did that, and Wilril did not disappoint, an elixir shooting out of his left sleeve from the sudden movement, flying through the air and landing in his right hand. And for his next trick, Wilril had apparently decided to gulp down the unidentified liquid within. The king's heart skipped a beat whenever Wilril did that - he honestly feared that the man would accidentally explode himself into gore any day now, despite not having easy access to any elixir that could conceivably do that.

Rather unusually, the elixir he gulped seemed to only make his shape fade away, leaving no indication whether he had disappeared in a translocative or merely illusory way. Probably illusory, King Ingmar thought rather correctly, and the suspicion was confirmed when he noticed Percy get lightly bumped by seemingly nothing at all in a few seconds. This seemed to signal to him that it was an appropriate time to speak.

"As you say, Father. I, Grimm Grimmeth Fogeye shan't fail you."

"Yes, yes, of course. Now get out of here already, will you?"

Percy chose to obey without speaking to the king any longer - a fact that pleased the man greatly.

"One of you, go find me a horse. Have it saddled and waiting at the East gate, I shall go arm myself meanwhile," he ordered his siblings without missing a beat, which was also pleasing to witness, even though he had a long way to go in that respect, as the king could see from Arcus' reaction.

"My dear Percy, though it warms my heart that you are trying to fake some semblance of a spine, you seem forget that you are the second youngest of the group. Besides, I think that amongst all of us the most qualified to find us suitable horses would be you. Be a dear and go secure us all some of those loathsome creatures whose company you seem to enjoy so much." he said, stroking his beard in a way that reminded Ingmar of his own father. Ingmar didn't much like that guy, either.

"Unfortunately, it seems that for once Wilril is right on the money. The sooner we get these things over with, the sooner we can go back to our own business," he then observed, and quickly left, paying no mind to the scowling Percy. Good riddance, the king thought.

"I will go, Father," Wallace finally said as well, and left, leaving only Don behind, who seemed to be enthusiastic about continuing the conversation.

"Well, father, I certainly won't claim your knowledge of the finer points, but if your accomplishments are as great as those of our forebear then myself and my brothers may not have to worry about one of the plagues. Or at the very least save it for last. So it would certainly do well to know the outline of what you have achieved and what threat it will vanquish."

He certainly was the inquisitive type, was he not, the king thought. Trying to avoid as much of his heroic destiny as possible.

"Ah, my little project probably will not directly apply to your quest, my son. At least not in the nearest future. It is simply a stepping stone to greatness, so to speak. If it works, of course, and I have every reason to believe it will," he bluffed at the youth in front of him. Bluffing to your subjects while you were king was fun - if they called you on it, you could always have them executed for impertinence, which simplified systematic telling of half-truths and blatant lies quite a bit.

At Castle Fogeye's smithy...

Solkie was having a very good day - the orcs, for once, had not tried to reach the castle at all, and had been happy with shooting people and stealing horses in the rest of the town, which suited him just fine and allowed him to work on some very important projects, like horseshoes for all the king's horses, completely unimpeded by either the king's men or anyone else who tended to seek his expertise. It felt very good to work on something actually important and practical, unlike all those ceremonial weapons Roe kept ordering all the time. And just as he was finishing up his very last horseshoe, his day got brighter still - Per-uh, Grimm! Yes, Grimm, King Ingmar's son, just happened to stroll in! He had not expected this visit, but he had, of course, prepared for it! It was not without reason that he kept very detailed and frequently updated casts of the kingspawn's bodies (obtained with the help of Roe in exchange for a steady supply of ceremonial weapons), after all. So, when Grimm came in, Solkie was ready.

"Prince Grimm! It is marvelous to see you here today, Your Magnificence!" the smith said in his most excited tone. "May I interest you in a set of plate armor? Perhaps a superb quality blade tailored specifically for your hand? Anything you ask for, I can provide in whatever quantities you desire!"

Solkie loved being prepared for his job. Going the extra mile, in his opinion, was always worth it.

In Wallace's office...

Wallace's office was a rather clean and boring place, and Pinaria, while hardly happy about her job in general (it was most unbecoming for a servant to be anything more than content, in her opinion), certainly preferred to keep it that way, even if it was difficult to find a moment when the Prince wasn't here doing whatever it was he did with those books of his all day. The elderly servant was actually almost done with the regular routine when Prince Wallace suddenly walked back into the room, giving her quite a scare. She shrank back into the corner, waiting for the Prince to give her permission to leave - sadly, though, he seemed busy looking through the books. She hoped this wouldn't turn out to be one of those days when Prince Wallace would let her stand here for five hours before noticing she was even around.

[Wallace's embezzlement roll: 8+3]

Though looking somewhat dissatisfied initially, Prince Wallace did seem like he wasn't going to be here long, though - he did not even try to sit down, though this alone was probably not an indication of intent. The speed at which he leafed through the books, though, was somewhat of a better sign to go by. As predicted, the Prince did not take too much time to do his magic - a few marks here, a few marks there - Pinaria did get a little worried when he got the other books out, but the adjustments there proved small enough as well. And then, with a slight curl of his lip and a brief softening of his expression, he closed everything up and left, which was greatly appreciated by the maid, who quickly finished up and left before the frightfully occupied accountant could return once more. Little did she know, however, that she had just been witness to an appropriation of enough funds for a serf to buy back his own farm, then retire and live comfortably with his extended family for the next twenty or so years. And what's more, this appropriation, masterfully done as it was, would probably not be noticed by anyone at all except the maid, who could not say she had witnessed anything truly out of the ordinary.

Outside Arcus' room...

Tregol hated this wing of the palace with all his heart and soul. He kept asking for somebody to reassign him, but it seemed that somebody really did have it in for him at the palace guard - he had narrowed it down to two, maybe three people, and the sad part was that at least one of them was King Ingmar. So, being unable to change it, he accepted his fate and continued his vigil over the rooms of the great princes Wilril and Arcus. One of them was, obviously, more of a problem than the other, what with the tendency to drink dangerous substances and occasionally spend an afternoon foaming at the mouth, leaving Tregol with no other option than to bother the other kingspawn on the floor to come quick and help - obviously, he was not well liked by Arcus for this reason.

After Arcus moved past him without even acknowledging his presence, Tregol was feeling happy that he was doing his job right for once and had no reason to bother the rather impulsive kingspawn, and also that Wilril remained missing for now. This might be one of the good days, he thought optimistically, and his mood was only improved when he saw the prince quickly vacate his room with two whole armfuls of what he clearly recognized as alchemical and medical supplies, if only by the protective and loving way the kingspawn was carrying them. Maybe he could now take a nap, the guard thought as the kingspawn, having thoroughly looted his room, disappeared around a corner.

Welp, I can take a hint (while Wallace takes all the money)

Go to the Barracks, attempt to appropriate some soldiers protectors meatshields.
Promise them glory and fame and all that sugar-coated nonsense.

If all else fails, inform them of what mother will have done to them if she finds out they refused to do their utmost to keep her little boy safe.
Hint: It involves wasps, the colon, and the royal chefs patented 8000 alarm chili.
