PS, I had a question regarding lore: is there any sort of over-arching religious organization that Gordon might belong to (like the Divine/Plague Dragons from FEF1), or do people basically worship whatever they feel like?

Two crits and the game barely started. Also yes, there is a religion he could follow. The god priests usually workship is "The Defender", some kind of judge-like god.  Another one is "The Iron Hand", but it is mostly military-related, saying that there is a Titan watching everyone.
