You know, this kind of assault agains a bunker is, in real life terms, the absolute dumbest thing possible. The only reason I can think of why we are using it is because it's 1941, we have no supplies whasoever (one in 3 gets a rifle, for fuck's sake) and we need that machinegun nest silenced now.

Well the Soviets were willing at time to take horrendous tactical losses to inflict strategic defeats on the germans that were well worth the losses.  If sending 500k men to die lets you encircle and subsequently capture a million germans, you are saving soviet (and german) lives in the long run.

That said I doubt an assault would often take this form.  A human wave attack wasn't a simple suicide bum rush like a banzai charge, these things were actually coordinated to minimize casualties and accomplish an objective.

But hey, enough with the grognarding.  Baldrovich is going to stupidly charge forward again and try to patch up sexy Justin Bieber.

Or why, in defiance of real doctrine, you can't take the rifle off your dead companions.

Which gives me an idea for a game, actually...something like a cooperative Looter's Delight, but everyone only gets one bit of gear (persistent) and perhaps not even a whole weapon or whatever. You fight a wave of some goblins or wolves or something, take stuff from the fallen, make better gear, then the next wave comes. And so on and so forth.
