I wonder what happened with the 2 guards. They rushed after the settlers... and while Misty got ahead by falling down the hill, a running group of guards should catch a slowly walking group of migrants, which stop to pray, which stop for zombies and stop to talk with elves.
Reg and Holt died a very horrible Reader Driven Narrative style death. We're trying to overcome our failures but it's hard when you keep bringing them up.
Nah, they probably got into a whole mess of misadventures on their own.  Probably got sidetracked chasing after imaginary kobolds.

Reg and Holt catch up with migrants - and seeing them with elves, Reg immediately charges into atack. Why would any dwarf talk with an elf without being held capitve or something similar, right? Holt tries to stop her, as he knows better, and hilarity ensues.

Actually, these tree-huggers look like a good company. Let's not let them die for at least the next part of the story. :)

Suggest a proper burial for your late smithy friend.

Ooh, as a bonus, suggest to the elves that his remains could quite possibly help nourish the tree. Maybe we could get the elves to help out... manipulative as that may be.

I've played Dwarf Fortress far too long. "Let's bury our dead friend - not to give him a proper burial, but because it'll make the grass greener over here and keep the necromancers away."

I don't think our friend of a priestess would like the idea, of a Dwarf being buried next to a tree.
I think she would prefer if said dwarf were buried beneath a fortress. Or at least in a mountain or a rocky cliff.

And it might not be a great idea to leave a talented warrior's corpse where our friend the necromancer might pick it up.  Not unless ypu want to be dealing with Rimtar the Headless Hammerdwarf later on.

I don't think she cares overly much about what happens to the flesh, once the blood's all been drained out.  But, maybe I shouldn't try to guess what she's thinking.  She's pretty far out there.

Look at the Puzzlebox in our backpack, check to see if it has broken.

Trade good!  Trade good right there!  It's not going to serve much good at ShieldDawn (it's "imported," after all, so won't even add to wealth) and conceivably could save some hides right now.  I repeat, let's get that trading going on.

. . . Yeah, I'm outvoted by now.  Let's just hope that "talking to elves about cheese" helps snap us out of emotional trauma.

I think it's more about principle.
Rather to have a dead Dwarf left unburied than to let the corpse have anything to do with elven traditions.

I don't believe they discovered she was missing immediately, and the eager one might have a wee bit of difficulty walking quickly. It's likely they're lagging behind by a fair amount.
