Name: Ironsole Jack
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Background: Jack, as he refers to himself, has discarded his past attachments, as well as his family name, for a self-imposed monastic existence: he wanders from place to place, settling nowhere and permitting himself no property save what he can carry. As he walks, he witnesses all he sees, and takes action. The entirety of his philosophy can be summed up as "If you wish and can do, do as you wish". He sees failure to grasp an opportunity, to make a decision, to accomplish a desire as the greatest evil there is. His arch-nemesis is indecision. He is winning the battle, and can be rather rash as a result.
Usually, people have grand reasons for life-changing decisions like "I'll throw my old life aside to travel the world". Jack didn't - his parents didn't die, his hometown wasn't razed, he witnessed no great evil except for the regular fare. He had a job as a librarian's assistant in the City-in-Two, which paid pretty regularly and did not require any heavy lifting. In time, he was expected to become librarian himself. That was not to be - in time he realized that he didn't want to be master of a dusty building filled with books about things that he never had a go at in his life. His childhood dreams returned to him - he wanted to be a mighty warrior, a powerful mage, a great philosopher - but he realized that his crippling lack of experience with the world made all those things impossible.
If there was a thing he did not lack, it was force of will - a sort of quiet determination for accomplishment. So one day, he took a bag, a stave, his favorite book, some dried meat, and a terrifying quantity of naiveté, and set out into the world. Since then, he has been beaten, robbed, stabbed, saved, healed, set on fire, drowned, betrayed, loved, cursed, tarred and feathered, ennobled and memorialized in crappy poetry. He is certainly not the half-man half-youth that set out from the City-in-Two that day - he is not a man either, but a child: he takes responsibility for no one but himself, fights the things he dislikes as he sees fit, and smiles brightly.
Description:
Jack's travels have left their mark on him - first of all, he's tanned brown, the shade of old wood, and his face is weathered. He is thin and wiry, with a long braid of sun-bleached hair, and rather unremarkable brown eyes. His face is reasonably young and handsome, especially when he smiles, which is often. His ears are pierced with several steel and gold rings, and he has several prominent scars - the whole right side of his chest is one large burn mark, and there's a rather ugly scar on his throat, which he usually covers with a scarf. There are many smaller scars on his body, not worth mentioning.
He usually wears simple traveling clothing and carries a large leather backpack with many pockets and a heavy metal-shod staff. When possible, he walks barefoot - the origin of the epithet "Ironsole" - but he has a pair of boots in his pack, just in case.
