Looking for
dwarven table top game ideas - best would be simple to play (e.g. dice game) but sufficiently dwarven and different from real games, relating to this
mini mod repository: here

Ideas and comments are welcome!

I like the tabletop idea.  Use miniature figures, workshop models, etc.

Where can I find the code for your mechanical workshops?  I've been looking for those.

The c++ side or the lua?
c++: here will be in next dfhack release
lua/gamefiles : here not sure how this will work...
Edit: clarification, lua gamefiles are used by lua script that manages these mods (unfortunetly it also needs dfhack core edit to work)

Ah, so it includes an option to run a function constantly... I guess that means I don't have to put much effort into fixing up the minor bugs in my own machine plugin, since they'll be obsolete with the next version of dfhack anyway.  Well, I guess I can work on other stuff in the meantime.

Or... is there a way of getting this particular update now?

only if you are willing to build it yourself. Maybe i'll try building stuff for r4 myself. Currently trying to tidy up somewhat.

On failures:
So some time ago i got an idea for a bulletin board. It would be a workshop that idle dwarfs use without players interaction, you could only look over what they posted. The technical side worked okay, as can be seen here . However the design is not what i wanted. It's cumbersome to finish (that is i would need to program in a lot of different sentences depending on e.g. thoughts, preferences, traits) and is not that useful so that players would use (if included in e.g. their favourite modpack) or install it at all. One good idea i heard is: give good thoughts (e.g. complained to superior) when using the bulletin board. Still not sure if that is worth it.

I think better would be a general "there are this many of this kind of thought" listing to determine what needs to be done next better a la rollercoaster tycoon

Hmm that is a good idea. Though i think it does not need the "posting" job. It could just be a workshop that monitors dwarfs around and collects info on how often which thought comes up. Also maybe have some different modes (e.g. god statistics, material preferences, etc...) that way player could place a few around the fort and have some understanding on what is preferred in what area, or even e.g. split fort into areas which differ by religion or preferences.

I do like the idea of a workshop that idle dwarfs use though. Could make an altar that idle dwarfs pray to for different bonuses, or games that idle dwarfs play. Just things to spice up the lives of our poor dwarfs.

I told you before, I do like some more flavor for idle dwarves as well. Be it the note-board, or the other examples that I mentioned to you. Similar to Roses suggestions, some form of casino, shrine, chessboard... I could even merge my speakers podium and music stage into this, to make them more random. Just like a dwarf might make a party at a statue, a idle dwarf might decide to play some music.

Well i was thinking of adding split-workshop support (e.g. a job that needs x dwarves in different connected workshops) and idle jobs support for dwarven games idea (see first post). Though haven't yet decided the extent of it or the api.

I am not quite sure what you mean by games. Do you just need a name and names for tools (like the strange dice), or an actual game with rules that is virtually played by the dwarves, giving good thoughts to the winner and bad thoughts to the loser?

Game with game rules. Bad thoughts - not so sure, maybe good thoughts for winner and no thoughts for looser, wasted time would be punishment enough. Also game rules are needed for the second step: adding a way for player to play as one of the dwarves.

Rock Pick Gauntlet.

Gauntlet wields pick = wins
Gauntlet gets crushed by rock = loses

Rock crushes Gauntlet = wins
Rock gets mined by pick = loses

Pick mines rock = wins
Pick gets wielded by Gauntlet = loses
