Hrm. Crashed on me just as I was starting to ramp up vampire lord production ;_;

Doesn't look like there's a very robust logging feature, so I can't even report the error whatsit that popped up. Shame...

S'definitely changed since the third alpha, heh. Looking good, though some UI extras (click and drag, aiieee) would be nice.

Posting to watch with the fury of a thousand suns. I'll definitely give this a try in the near future.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

This game is so awesome. I just wish it didn't crash every time I hit the elf lord.

Just out out curiosity, and not to derail, but how does this game compare feature/playability wise to rim world?

I gave a quick try and find the potential really there.

What impressed me the most in my 1st minute was the user interface and interaction with the game, it's simply fantastic with its intuitivity and mouse driven ease.

I wish DF has something even half as good by default (fortunately thanks to DFHack + the mouse query plugin, it's already better, but not yet there)

Anyways, back to KeeperRL, it's definitively an awesome game, and if the dev continues to improve it, i can see it becoming a major title for anyone that like the DF and Dungeon Keeper concept, i enjoyed a lot my 1st game on it after dying from some archer invasion in my barely built up home

Definitively a masterpiece potential.

Just now found this. Very nice concept. Very limited at the moment, but still intriguing. I hope he goes nuts with it.

First impressions are pretty good, the idea that despite having an overhead view of things you are a physical entity in the world that you can directly control is pretty cool. You can also possess creatures much like in dungeon keeper, except it play a bit more like a roguelike at that point (You can "posess" yourself too)

I started off and mined out some iron, but it was taking forever so I strted wandering around as my keeper. I found a road and auto-followed it straight into a human keep of some sort. I was in too much of a panic to react so I just ran. Fortunately trees block sight but you can still move through them so I lost them, however I had been injured by them when i stumbled through their front door. Assuming that some mushrooms I had picked up were just healing mushrooms I ate it.

Still getting used to the way the game works, good thing there's an easy mode =p
From what I can tell, weapons, armor, and traps are made at the workshop by the gnomes. And does anyone have some tips to stay alive?

A report of a game i just had

At start i summoned more imps to get the job done faster (like in good old Dungeon Keeper), as the nearby villages would attack soon, so job done faster = you can have more ressource faster = you can get prepared faster.

After gathering enough stone, iron and wood, i got my keep started, big rooms with beds + training devices, a lab , a library and a workshop.

Started to get summon some gnome and clay golems just in case of early attacks, then mana helping i started to improve the humanoid breeding and golem animation, so i could get stronger creature.
I summoned some stone golem just in time for the first attack to happen.

The 2 invaders (ranged elves) killed a clay golem but they were overwhelmed by my troops that i had gathered in team (and i was possessing the leader golem of that team).

Back to work, i started to get a graveyard running and put the corpses killed in there, dug more iron and stone, and found some gold, so i build a treasure room too. I expanded my library and added more items in the lab so the workers could make more potions (great genius of this game to have the workers making potions without you needing to tell them)

With more mana i improved the necromancy to the point i could rise Vampires and spellcasting (to have my keeper getting more spells for himself).

After repelling another attack, a village decided to launch a "final attack", i gathered my minion in a squad and took the possession of vampire leader .

At some point i was wondering why my vampire was missing so much and taking damage, i had equipped him with a very good elven sword (taken from my stockpiles on which the imps dropped the dead invaders items too).

I looked at his equipement and noticed he had nothing equiped, despite previosuly i had equiped the sword he picked up. And then i noticed on the top of the screen :

Makes sense, and reading again the top screen log during the battles i saw that combat is really brutal in a Dwarf Fortress ways, limbs are flying around, and that's then what happened, one of the invader just cut my vampire hands.

I decided to go possess my keeper in his library and bring him on the battlefield, while my creatures were fighting for their live, their artificial live and unlife for the vampires. The idea was to test the new spells i got.

I decided to see what he was worth in melee and went to attack the Elf lord

Noticing i missed, i decided to retreat the keeper back to his library, as after all he is me, losing him is losing the game.

Fortunately while i was resting in the Library, my minions were victorious !

Looking at my keep entrance , the corpses were all around, sad ... NOT ! as it meant i could summon more vampire , as i earned more mana, i upgraded my spellcasting ability too, we'll see for the next "final attack" what it will do.

Some attack happened, minor but i lost troops, so i had to summon more, meaning more mana spent and then i couldn't improve my other summon abilities as they cost more and more.

And during that attack, that actually combined 2 villages this time, that fortunately i repelled, i noticed that the AI is actually smart, see one of my goblin : he went all the way to my stockpiles, picked a potion the gnomes finished and threw it at an archer without me even asking.

The other good side of this battle meant more corpses ! more vampires coming !

And it wasn't a second too late, another "final attack", this time some knights lead by a "Duke of Norra"
and the attackers were rather numerous, i had to fight harder, my poor clay golem that i possessed stood no chance, the Duke battleaxe cut his 2 legs and finally cut him in half !

Then as i was trying to get rid of my stone golem , suddenly out of nowhere, game over, apparently the Duke killed my Keeper, but i have no idea how it was possible as the Duke was still on the entrance of my keep, and my Keeper was still in the Library that was far from where the action was going on ?

Very likely a bug

I like this game a very  lot, it's simply brillant, so easy and intuitive to play while having depth and being very enjoyable, the dev is a genius.

Got another keeper game running.

When one of the attack featured an Elf lord, the game automatically paused, despite it wasn't set as paused in the interface, and i couldn't unpause either by pressing SPACE or clicking on the Pause on the bottom right of the screen.

Fortunately, when i gathered a team and took control of the leader, i could then play turn based , and when the battle was finished, i un-possessed the leader and the game ran again normally.
Except that i couldn't pause it anymore (space bar or pause button on bottom right were doing nothing)

But at least it worked, i gathered my minions and possessing the leader of them , i decided to go on a punitive expedition on one of the village that attacked me, looking for one in the wilderness i found what i think was a building, but at the same time i got a "final attack" from another village, so i hurried back to my keep just in time to defend against the coming enemies.

We beat them down (good leveled and well equiped vampires, not even vampire lords, are scary) and the game just told me i won ?

I should have tried the village revenge attack earlier.
Looking in the option, i noticed that the default difficulty is Easy, could explain why i had such an easy time on this one.
Oddly, out of the unnamed elf lord, i got no named unique in this game (unlike the Duke that bug-killed my keep in previous game)

Still having fun, i really hope the dev will keep improving it, that KeeperRL is really on a path for glory :D

I'll have to try with upped difficulty, or maybe the adventure mode to see what this one is about.

I only wish it had a save function.

Or does it have one and I'm just blind?

I couldn't find one either, at least in Keeper mode, i have not tried the Adventure mode.
Is there a "wait 1 turn" key for when you just want to wait 1 turn without moving while in turn based squad leading ?

I think space does it ?
And if anyone wonders, you scroll around the map by right mouse drag and drop (took me some time to figure out first time I played).

I emailed the dev to let him know we started discussing the game here in case he wants to stop by for feedback and bug reports.

Yes, that's it thanks !
space for pause/unpause while not in possession mode, and space for "wait 1 turn" while in possession mode.

If you press F1 when possessing a minion/keeper you get commands list as well.

Game is pretty damn fun although I get a few random bugs. When you are invading the villages there are some random Elf-lords who are un-named, the only named ones I see come in the final wave. Haven't invaded the human village yet but im guessing they might have some un-named Dukes as well.

The adventure mode is pretty good as well, quite a lot different to keeper mode, lots of different enemies to face. Was annoying though when fighting a cyclops as the clever bugger threw a potion of blindness at me, then a potion of slowness. Luckily I had a healing potion, unluckily though I was blind so I accidentally drank my potion of sleep instead....

EDIT:

Also the different alpha versions are like different games, I recommend you try alpha 3 and 4 as well
