Skip the RNG, and declare the battle.  Since these early battles are basically "tutorial mode", I don't think anyone will complain at a minor exercise of DM fiat as long as you don't make a habit of it. ^_^

As for the Chimera creature. Plans for it in the future, capturing it now would prove hindering to say the least :P I will give you a parting gift however :P

Sorta. Its more of a bioadapted plant that can mimic the behavior patterns of creatures. Consider it a mobile man-eater plant that can activily lure people to their deaths. Like a siren.
