The Olympic Games opening ceremony will be held today, and some competitions (slopestyle and figure skating) are already underway.
So, here's a dedicated Olympic Games thread.
In order to keep this thread orderly, friendly (I hope) and on rails, here's the rules:
1.
Don't start political discussions and arguments here. This is the most important rule. By political discussions and arguments I mean discussions about President Putin and how horrible President Putin is, IOC and how horrible it is, Russia and horrible it is, and so on and so forth. If your heart is boiling because of the plight of the poor lynched gays and Chechens, please go to
Sheb's European Politics Megathread and post about it there. Let's keep the discussion in this thread exclusively about sports and sportsmen, shall we?
2.
Don't denigrate or bash Olympic teams here. As RedKing put it in the 2012 London Olympics thread, "If you want to cheer on your own country, fine! If you want to cheer on someone else's country, fine! If you want to call Country X's team "a bunch of spoiled, cheating fucktards", NOT FINE". Once again I remind you to go to the
Sheb's European Politics Megathread if you hate Russia.
3. I'll repost this rule from the 2012 Olympic Games thread -
if you are talking about a sports event that is ongoing or which has just finished, please put it in the spoiler tags. Not many people will be able to watch the events live because of the time zone difference.
---------
The opening ceremony will begin at 20:14 Moscow time (approximately 16:14 GMT).
Are there any events you are looking forward to?
