TVTropes... I remember being so pissed off about this stupid generic fantasy thing (and that Spoony guy, urgh) being plugged on every other page I went to, but as I read more and more I realized it was anything but and the concept grew on me.

i found it in some list which stated good free games, the funny thing is that TVTroops i've heard about only here, Minecraft was not even done back then and Boatmurdered was played way later i found about DF ...  i guess i am old :D

That would be forum of a gaming magazine. I was reading a thread about good freeware games and someone asked something like "Hey, do people still play dwarf fortress? Those community fortresses with action reports were fun!" I took a shot and found the game was actually quite enticing.

Of course, someone also mentioned that the wiki is the key to learning, and their beginner guides are quite useful.

4chan, /b/. Gif thread about most violent game scenes you've seen. Someone posted gif on breaching HFS and massacre that followed, and then the thread was about DF.

Came across the second Ars Technica article about Dwarf Fortress and decided I had to try it.

That was actually the second article there.  The original http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/dwarf-fortress-ten-hours-with-the-most-inscrutable-video-game-of-all-time/ is where I first found out about the game.  The URL gives you an idea of the flavor of her experience  :)

technically i first heard about it from minecraft (oh the shame!) but it was a friend who actually got me to play it.

my brother was quite orgasmic about the game,and showed it to me.

Had the ASCII symbols flashing in front of my eyes every time i closed them,for quite a while.
The third fortress was the first proper one,but alas,i died after i had the troglodytes swarm me from the caves.
At least one of the dwarves made a rock bucket artifact.
