When the very cosmos of youtube, I was searching up random games to play in the bar. Soon all I typed was Dwa- and DF popped up. excited and curious about this discovery, I quicky saw some videos on it. Things quickly took place from there. At first I played only adventure mode first, as I made very feable attempts at Dwarf Mode.(But seriously, I didn't even know of to brew drinks!) My first death was by an ambush of goblins.

I think I found it through Minecraft, actually.

My first attempt to play failed as I slipped and fell off the learning cliff, but when I gave it another go some time later I managed to get far enough to play and enjoy it.

I *think* that the first time I stopped to really read about the game was on the IndieDB page of it, but I remember that I have seen some cat jokes of DF before that on the internet. But I only started playing after I read Boatmurdered and watched the captnduck youtube tutorials and read some of the TinyPirate tutorials.

I found dwarf fortress surfing the web looking for games involving dwarves just out of boredom.  I started playing and found it frustrating but great.

I found it when searching the web for good ASCII style games... And of course DF topped all the lists for it's deep and awesome gameplay, and great user-unfriendly interface.

I heard about it shortly after it first came out when someone compared it to Minecraft. At first, I thought the world generation (because it took ages) was the entire game. I was like, "This is dumb. It's like Progress Quest but not funny."

I actually found this game in a really odd way.

Back when I used to play World of Warcraft, I came across a quest in the barrens called Dwarf Fortress. During the quest, you had to blow up a fortress filled with dwarves. In order to do this, you had to recover the fortress schematics from a dwarf named Haggis Boatmurder. The fortress schematics even had the flavor text, "A depiction of the fortress using primitive icons to represent essential structures."

I was interested to see what this was referencing, and after looking it up I was lead to this game.

I love it when much larger games community reference smaller ones like this.

There is something wrong in your statement. Dwarf Fortress predates Minecraft by years, sou you couldn't "heard about it shortly after it first came out when someone compared it to Minecraft.

My first contact with DF was in a thread in another forum I used to follow. Someone posted a AAR and I was hooked instantly.
