4chan /v/

Also, what the flying fuck. I never knew about Boatmurdered until I had played DF for over a year, or something.

Pretty sure I heard mention of it on the rec.games.roguelike.development newsgroup.

Came across the second Ars Technica article about Dwarf Fortress and decided I had to try it.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/04/challenge-accepted-dwarf-fortress-pros-show-ars-up-with-insane-10-hour-forts/
That was actually the second article there.  The original http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/dwarf-fortress-ten-hours-with-the-most-inscrutable-video-game-of-all-time/ is where I first found out about the game.  The URL gives you an idea of the flavor of her experience  :)

Lol, hello there my fellow ARSians, may I join the line?

Heard about it on a forum of another game early 2010.
I read some hilarious stories, downloaded it but never actually even started a game.

About half a year later another DF thread appeared on the forum of yet another game, I read more hilarious stories, I downloaded again but this time I actually started playing.
Been playing since then.

Man do you remember ElendorMush?  I used to play a lot of the Mush scene in college - that's when Telnet predated the Internet. When those sassy 386's hit the scene, I lugged home that 10mb hd and boat of a monitor for $1500.  I started loading up roguelikes downloaded from BBS's and was happy as a clown.

In the early 2000's I heard about DF being the most complicated rouglike game to date.  I could swear I hit the enter key and built my first world in the early 2000's.  The Wiki says 2006 was the release date.  It had to be earlier than that.  I must be going crazy or getting old.

I didn't really get back into this scene but within the last few years.  That dwarven ale just keeps callin' ya back.

I used to play Minecraft a lot, and after I looked it up on Wikipedia, I followed the DF link and immediately liked the idea.

The other day, I booted up Minecraft for a moment, and was absolutely appalled by the game's lack of detail and boring simplicity. I have decided that DF > Everything Else, and Minecraft is a subset of Everything Else. 'Twas a train, to the land of dwarves, Minecraft to me.

About one or two years ago, while browsing the forums for the Terrafirmacraft mod for Minecraft, i found a thread about Dwarf Fortress. Searched it on google, Didn't play Minecraft for the next few months.

Interesting to see so many people coming from minecraft, i personally didn't (as it didn't exist  :P), i always forget that minecraft is like 2-3 years old now... Sunk so much time into that alpha...

TvTropes, twice. I regret having only one vote to give...

Namely, I first ran into a reference for one of the epic tales - I think it was Boatmurdered, but I'm not sure because it was way back in 2010. I then tried playing the game on my laptop in the winter vacation of 2010-2011; given that my laptop at the time was a piece of crap, that was crap even in 2007 when I bought it (it had an amazingly huge 340MB of RAM for instance; I don't even remember what processor it had), that... did not go over so well. So I dropped everything until last spring (~May 2013) when the story repeated itself, but this time with Failcannon.

And I've been playing ever since.

TvTropes, Youtube and the wiki.

Found the wiki, looked up the game on Youtube, forgot about it and then found it on TvTropes.

Ah yes... The amount of references to this all over the Internet. Naturally, I had to wonder how a game referenced so much on the Internet, was never heard of by any my mates, all gamers. So, with my, "hipster like attitude" as they call it, I looked into it right away. Been sucked in to the procedural generated humour, ever since.

Back in 2006, via the now defunct CorpNews.com forum, which was a diaspora site from the old LumTheMad forums.  Somebody posted up a link to the, then still active (iirc, though I might be mistaken), Boatmurdered thread.
