Any word on the next release?
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:04:56 pm »

Hey guys, I realise it's futile to try and apply predictability to Toady's.... Toady.  But has there been any indication that the new version will be complete any time soon?  I wanted to dip back into Dwarf Fortress, but if there's a new release around the corner, which I expect there may be, I'd rather wait so I don't get burned out and buried under neglected responsibilities before it hits.

There has in fact been recent breaking news on the release! Toady had this to say to reporters today.

"Nope, not yet."

You know that's actually more definitive than what I expected :P

Guess I'll go start a fort then!

yes do.  waiting for a release only causes pain, as it has to me ;_;

I expect, although it's foolish of me to even think about it, that the release will happen by the end of march

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

The timeframe can never really be guessed, because Toady doesn't rush his work. If he did, it just wouldn't be dwarf fortress.

I was personally quite surprised that there was no DF2013 (in fact no updates in 2013 at all) but that was just because I saw "DF2012" and thought that implied yearly releases. Guess I was wrong.  :-\

Nope, the one before that was DF2010.

It's still significantly more informative than 0.34.11

.34.11 is 34.11% of the way to ascending to godhood,

as far as comparisons go, dwarf fortress has in fact ascended
though there are many RIP OFFS
no other game does what dwarf fortress does

no other game could give such an epic story as boatmurdered, without delibrately setting out to tell that story

I'm more impressed by the procedurally-generated stuff. Having read some of the SA threads behind the LPs, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes manipulation. At one point in Syrupleaf, one of the fortress's finest fighters is taken down because the enemies reached his bed while he was resting. Why was he recuperating in the courtyard for so long? Because the goons deliberately left him there. :/

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

There's no word, there never is.

However Toady is posting more details more often and talking about fixing bugs.  This procedes a release like leaves turn up before the rain (read: most of the time).
