Do you need assistance, Tarn?
« on: February 03, 2014, 07:20:38 pm »

Almost 2 years since the last update I've been eagerly awaiting patiently. Do you need help? I'll bring coffee and shit if you need it.

Noun or verb?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Some days I think he could use a professional nutritionist as his reported eating habits would make my mom twitch... But when type-2 diabetes runs in the family and his reported pop habit rivalled my dad's before he was diagnosed; you tend to think of things like that. Maybe a few batches of home-made healthy, nuke from the freezer meals would be an appropriate gift?

Ok I know that makes me sound like a stalker, but I only picked that much up from one interview and one DF talk so don't judge me. I haven't even read/listened to the most recent one.

Yeah, it's not like you're camped outside his window EVERY night.

I would have noticed.

No, seriously. I'm sure there's part of the stuff where he could use the help.

If I were him, I'd pick up someone to split the splittable parts of DF into independent threads, to make it more multithread and improve how well the game runs, while Toady continues to develop the next arc. DF2016 would not only have more stuff, but it would run better.

OK, let me be serious: Toady wants to work alone. He does not accept help. He likes being in control of his project, and does not like the idea of code he doesn't know about. He is aware it could likely be done faster.

I know that. What I mean is that, as long as DF isn't a dependency-ridden clusterfuck code-wise (which I know it isn't, since Toady stated it has a much cleaner code than his past projects), he should be able to find a trustworthy advanced programmer to grab the older parts of the code and split the execution into threads, while Toady simply adds the new content.

Think of it as if DF was a house, and Toady was building the upper floors while someone else sorts around the furniture and takes down a few walls and puts up new ones to sort out the lower floors so that you don't have to go through the kitchen to reach the bathroom. It doesn't sound so impossible. AND it's necessary, since FPS death is (and has always been) one of the main causes for fort abandonment.

No, let's not be serious.

They could out-source the crayon drawing which would net them roughly 12 days a year. Nevermind that no-one wants a crayon drawing not done by Toady & Threetoe. And if Tarn manages to subcontract defecation to CSoftheP as kindly offered I estimate that's maybe 13 extra days a year in total. In those 13 days Toady should easily be able to add multithreading, 3d graphics, and a preliminary multiplayer feature.

Well, my opinion on this is as follows:
Maybe the game could be made open source to start with, so people can see the code structure, then rather than people changing parts of it, there could be something like a thread where people quote parts of the code and ways that they could be improved, with the reasons for changing etc. This way Toady could see what people think could be improved in the code, and decide whether or not to add it, and also answer questions on things like 'why did you do it like this? I would have thought x would have made more sense!'

Uh, if you want to invent a time machine, go back in time, convince Tarn to do open source, go ahead. At lest that's what it sounded like you were saying.

Besides, the 'open source please' question has been asked numerous times and Toady One has said no each time.

I have a little sister, she could do it.

This. Open Source is simply not in the cards at all. He is very firmly opposed.

I mean to be honest DF isn't really a product. He isn't making this for his fans, he is making it for himself; it is his life's work after all.

Wow. You solved every DF's issue in just 3 lines. I think we should fire Toady and put you in his place.
