Odd ambush behavior and how to deal with web-shooters
« on: February 03, 2014, 11:34:56 am »

I just experienced something I've never seen before in Dwarf Fortress... namely, seven concurrent ambushes. This... doesn't seem like intended behavior. They all came off in a fairly rapid-fire manner, with just a few seconds of real time between each one. All in all, I was attacked by a bit over 70 invaders. This wouldn't be completely overwhelming, but a large portion of the goblins were mounted on spiders. Spiders who could shoot webs. Basically, my legendary soldiers spent most of their time on the ground trying to crawl out of webs. How exactly am I supposed to deal with vast hordes of web-shooters? A few of them are manageable, but when there's a vast army of them my soldiers just get stunlocked.

So, I tediously awaited the arrival of the dwarven caravan (I'm set up on a island, see)... And, they came. My fingers tingled, my nose twitched and my toes tickled... they came around the corner, over my bridge... Into my courtyard... Onto my trade depot...

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

ambushes are spawned and spotted squadwise and if you spot a single squad, then only that one is revealed... So you just didn't spot all at once, but spotted them in 7 steps... that is completely normal and vanilla behaviour. Not sure i ever witnessed a multisquad ambush in any different manner...
and against webs:
- ranged weaponry (dwarfs, turrets, siege engines..)
- enough meatshields (like war animals of any kind)
- decent armor (being webbed is no problem, as long as they can't bite through your helmet, plate steel is generally enough for that)
- FIRE... fires can be started in tons of ways, and all are efficient against spiders....

The armor works great against their bite attacks but they like to wrestle your dwarves and then pull their heads off like an ugly dolly. Best stick to traps, fire, and ranged attacks.

I coulda sworn that Meph removed the mount tag from the most likely culprit, the giant drowspider in the latest release.

As far as spotting goes it's entirely possible the mounts and riders were spotted separately for several squads. Happens to me fairly often.

Would a normal ambush really have 70+ invaders? Isn't that just siege territory at that point? That seems abnormal. And the drowspiders weren't the ones doing the killing, they just made it so my dwarves were always locked down. Their riders did the actual killing, and since whips are currently bugged and basically ignore armor, I don't think more armor would have helped(unless Masterwork nerfed whips). As for ranged attacks, with 70+ invaders... I don't think it really would have helped much. Fire possibly could have helped, but I don't think any Hellfire Turrets would have stood up very long. Traps would have worked, but... I hate having to resort to them. They just feel like cheating. Oh well, I guess that's the only way to survive. I'm not really a fan of that...

Well the drowspiders shouldn't be brought to battle anymore unless it's a save from before Masterwork 4h. And it's entirely plausible to get that many in ambushes. Squads can be pretty large.

Ambushing civs might send a siege that is entirely hidden. But yeah, what kind of spider was it? I did remove the mount tag from drowspiders.

It was definitely a drowspider. When did the mount tag get removed? I might not have updated the game since then.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed in the sticky that it was on the 31st. I'll definitely update to the new version now.
