Random Ideas Thread

This area seems to be worthwhile and not exactly covered. Like your mom.
So just post random ideas/plans/concepts/not-exactly-legal business schemes, and let's see what comes out! Like they said about your mom.

My thing:
So in the Harry Potter universe wizards are administrated by the various countries, and can influence muggle politics very heavily IIRC. So there must have been a Wizard World War One, complete with trenches and everything - has this idea been explored before?

Yup. Though how much or to what extent, I couldn't say. There's a good number of HP fanfics set during one of the world wars, though. Beyond HP, there's this huge honking series (trilogy? More?) of books I've forgotten the name of that is more or less explicitly WWI with dragons. Magic world war is a not entirely unknown concept, heh.

Still, trenches and whatnot would be unlikely in HP verse, unless AU-shenanigans seriously upped the wizarding population and cut into some of the magic bitsits. Even ignoring things like their teleport whatsit, wizards would have a lot more options than mundane tech for clearing out enclosed spaces. Precision launching deadly potions, transfiguring the trenches into killer bunnies at range, etc., so forth, so on.

Admittedly, by all evidence HP-verse wizards are idiots, so they might not cotton on to blatantly obvious trench busting tactics, but still.

I don't know about WW1, but I believe grindelwald was a representation of WW2 - according to the timeline, grindelwald rose to power in germany in the late 1930s or early 1940s, and the grindelwald was defeated in 1945, after dumbledore prevented him from invading britain. Furthermore, the symbol of the deathly hallows is pretty similar to the swastika, in that it was a symbol with a long history that was adopted by him and became primarily known for him in later years.

I have always wanted to create fan fiction in the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny universe, or at the very least find some, It seems like it would be very interesting.

consider that once you brew tea, you can drink it cold if you want, but trying to brew it cold will result in 4 different kinds of failure

i don't have any ideas yet other than taking a bunch of people who are terrible at singing putting them on one of these parade platforms with walls around them and make the room look like a karaoke room so they're nice and cozy and just drive them through town while they sing and whatever they sing is broadcasted with a ludicrously overpowered audio system in an attempt to ransom money off of the populace

In HPMOR, (Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which is what if Harry were a child prodigy, and his stepmother married an Oxford biochemist) this is rational!Harry's reason for believing the Dark Lord to be a total moron. It would be ridiculously easy to owl everyone in the Order of the Phoenix a magically-triggered hand grenade, or Transfigure a gallon of sulfuric acid into a chip of ice and flick it into someone's mouth. Transfiguration alone provides dozens of interesting assassination options. (If you were especially cruel and needed a contrived assassination plan, you could just cast Imperio on one of your followers, order them to kill your target, and then order them to transfigure into the target's armchair. They would, of course, die an agonizing death, but they would still have a clear shot at the target.)

Mixing Muggle knowhow with wizard magic seems to be the most brutal combination. Just from Prof. Quirrell's mock battles, we glean some good ideas from rational!Harry, such as using a car battery and jumper cables as a substitute for a lightning spell to break down a magical shield, or covering the floor with Transfigured ball-bearings, and I shall post more after I get to home-room.

I've been thinking of running a TFC Minecraft server that would be, basically, a race to the North/South pole. In case nobody knows what I'm talking about the mod, among other things, that the ambient temperature which affects biome generation gets lower the further from equator (at 0), after a certain point turning into an endless field of frost).

The idea being each person gets X points to 'buy' items (i.e. for me to spawn them for them), everyone shows up at 0,0 then the race is on.

PvP is fully allowed, and due to the mod mechanics you not only respawn some distance away without the items. but you get Slowness for a while.

My awesome (horrible) business idea is Puppies Forever. The problem with cute puppies is they get older and stop being cute and also make huge shitpiles and you have to do something about it. When a brand-new puppy barks it is always cute but a dog barking makes your neighbors want to murder you. Who wouldn't want to always have a cute fuzzy puppy?

As a customer, you order a puppy, and it arrives on your doorstep! After the puppy has grown up too much, whenever you get tired of it, you send it back and receive a new puppy!

Also, Kittens Forever.

Our operation would be nutrient-neutral, with a processing plant next door to the production warehouse.

Also introducing: Hi-Flavr Meat Jerky Powder, a 100% organic, locally-sourced, low-sugar, high-protein dietary supplement.

You'd be better off just genehacking the puppies so that they never mature.

Not HPVerse, but there's this Hitler/Stalin manga somewhere...
Regarding trenches: What limits are there for teleportation? What keeps a HP wizard from pulling an Eragon and teleporting a small piece of wood right into your cerebellum?

I would just murder the neighbours wanting to murder me, and then I'd murder everyone responsible for said business venture as well.

Their intelligence. (or rather, lack thereof)
Rationality!Harry actually goes through his textbooks and marks everything that could be combat-repurposed. Another one:

During the Stanford Prison Experiment arc (for your own safety, I won't explain exactly what goes on), Harry has to fly out of an area that has a powerful anti-levitation spell on it (which also affects broomsticks) at a speed which will. His solution? Transfigure a pebble into a solid fuel rocket and attach it to his broomstick. Harry thinks of Army of Darkness:
Quote from: rational!Harry
Alright, you primitive screwheads, listen up! Ya see this? This is my BROOMSTICK!
The ultimate issue with the rocketstick was that whoever invented the flying broomstick made it with Aristotelian physics, whereas the rocket works on real physics.

I'll note Methods of Rationality is an interesting idea, even if it is pretty terrible writing- and character-wise. Would love to read a good fic on the same basic concept (Harry raised by Science! and critical thinking, though, come on, he's still like 11).

You'd be better off just genehacking the puppies so that they never mature.
But then instead of charging people for a service that would cost virtually nothing in expenses, you would have to develop the genetically-altered animals and then get the customer to pay a whole lot of money up front.

Also an elderly dog trapped in the body of a slowly degrading puppy is just horrible. No customer would want that. They want real Puppies Forever®!

Re: Harry fanfic: Why doesn't Harry just turn the wall into dynamite and blow it up, killing his captors and letting him saunter out while immune to everything because of millions of layers of self-perpetuating protective spells? I'm not seeing any situation in which a non-wizard is able to do a damn thing to inconvenience a wizard, unless said wizard is a dumbass.

A) Spice coffee. It's mentioned rather frequently in terms of comestibles, but the logic of it baffles me. On a desert planet, its natives are inclined to make.. A hot water beverage? Why would they consume spice in this manner?
I don't see why it baffles you so. Is it because you think people in a hot climate would not drink hot beverages?
If so, then do keep in mind two things. One, it's freezing cold after the sunset. Similarly, the cavernous
sietches can be expected to be cool places - cool enough to allow living without stillsuits.
The second thing to remember, is that the Fremen culture was modelled on various Arab and Persian nomadic tribes, most notably the Bedouin. These are the people who "invented" coffee drinking. Google for history of coffee, or coffee in the Arab world.

Quote
B) So you have your sietch things which are all good and air-sealed to keep ambient water from sweat and such in. Community water, great. What stops a person from getting water-fat from its reservoirs? How do you determine how much water each is to get? Water portioning and water as wealth seemed rather important to the clans, seeing as giving someone else your water rings (a person's wealth of water in transportable fashion) amounts to a marriage proposal.
Frankly, I don't remember it very well, but I have a vague recollection of there being a person(s) tasked with guarding the water reservoir. It was them who administered water reclamation from dead bodies, and probably had more mundane water-related duties as well.

Furthermore, water in the Fremen culture was the most precious of things. Stealing water from the rest of the tribe would be among the most heinous of crimes, and highly taboo.
You probably have noticed that the sandpeople value the good of the tribe over the life of an individual. Taboo and self-preservation seem like good enough reasons for refraining from stealing.
