Well, they're not part of the game mechanics in that they won't operate autonomously. Nothing preventing you from using them as fluff in an action.

What are my options for physical defense against military actions that don't involve purchasing crafts from other players?

And what's with the "target eliminated" message for Monolith?

1) Using your own craft, hiring private security contractors, bribing the army, convincing the army you're an important asset, ...
2) As far as I've seen, there was no response for 2 turns, hence, the player has been eliminated. I hope I didn't erroneously remove someone, but anyway.

Actually I think I'll be more sensible and hire security.  What are my options?  Is this action what I should be doing?

Hire a security head to manage Pax Shipping & Receiving's security.  They should be an experienced individual with good connections in the industry.  Ask them to ask their contacts to bid on a 24/7 full security deal for the company.
