Microscope Round 2 OOC & Rules
« on: February 02, 2014, 03:32:53 pm »

Please, read through all the text before joining. There's a limit of 5 players (Including the organizer). The only order we will be following is that the current Lens gets to choose the Focus and start the turn, and then after three days or when all other players have finished, he posts the ending event, and then the Legacy is chosen, after which the new Lens has one day to post. There will be two rounds as focus but if there's enough demand we could continue or make a new game.  You will understand if you read through it.

The History of
[World Name]
A Microscope Game

I'm going to be a good boy and update the best compilation of the rules that I have seen until now.

Microscope is a game about worldbuilding. Not in the literal sense, as the players do not take the roles of gods or anything like that; rather, the players work to create a rich and detailed history of the world, building off of ideas and concepts introduced (and/or modified) by the other players. It is, essentially, an exercise in creative writing and roleplaying.

Microscope describes itself as a "fractal game." That is because the game works by adjusting the focus in and out as the players see fit. The game starts with the beginning and ending of the history already known; the bits in between are filled by establishing new facts about the world that do not contradict existing facts, and then exploring the implications and consequences of those facts. Essentially, the game is one long answer to the question of "What is this world?"

Everyone is equal as far as creative authority goes; there are very few rules about what you can and can't write, but everyone is an equal participant, and nobody has any precedence when it comes to any particular aspect of the game. Nobody owns anything. A character, a god, a city, a secret society; they are all tools to be used by every player, regardless of who introduced them to the game. Technically speaking, there isn't even a GM; I'll be something like First among Equals since I'm the one who owns a copy of the rules (and I'm the guy who'll perform general thread maintenance,) but when it comes to actually playing the game I have no more or less power than anyone else.

If anyone has questions about the rules I can clarify. My history suggestion is Humanity begins to settle the solar system as Earth is ravaged by a nuclear war, each of the major powers sending out their own colonization force. and end with The fragmented human factions fall into ruin as an alien civilization invades.

Hopefully indeed, I think the last one just got off to a bad start and was a little too slow. I think the new setting up play section and shorter time limit will help make those less of a problem.

Count me in, I guess.
I think it wasn't clear in the rules that there is no GM so I'll be a player too, but I think 5 players will still work.

Are there any objections or changes anyone would like for the history seed I provided? If not we can move straight on to the palette.

Sounds good to me and leaves a lot of potential to be had.

A question though - do we have to strictly focus on events and not, say, talk about a specific city (for example), as long as it's relevant to the current Focus?
Or would we, for instance, have to describe an event/scene that happened in that particular city instead?

Isn't that too short for a history though? It would be a good period, but not long enough for a game like this I think.

You could detail something like that in an event or scene relating to it or maybe as something away from your turn, but I don't think a whole turn should be spent on detailing a city at a particular point in time. I have had the idea of adapting Microscope to be used to tell the story of a single city, but that will probably never come to fruition.

A world war is a very dense part of history so it could work, but a longer period of history might be better.

I would still prefer a sci-fi setting that you mentioned, though. :P

Well since everyone agrees with sci-fi we'll be going with it.

Before everyone starts adding to the palette I should mention that the palette should be broad items that are included or excluded, specific events pertaining to the ingredients should be explored in the history, not in the palette. Say if the palette had precursor aliens and ancient monoliths, they aren't connected until an event in the history connects them, such as capturing a precursor and interrogating it about the monoliths.

For my palette item I'm going to include living asteroids.
