Everyone knows Lego Rock Raiders is the ultimate dungeon keeper sequel.
This would in fact be my favorite arguably terrible game. I could never beat the later levels, because the thing was so clunky.

I loved Lego Rock Raiders, but because you couldn't save in the level and the game was unstable on my computer, and the later levels took over two hours to complete... yeah.

Now it is interesting that while EA is producing a monstrosity of micro-transactions, Blizzards little card game Hearthstone is generally considered pretty well balanced, and I think I can guess why... In the making of Hearthstone the devs worked with the accountants to set the price for things, and in testing they had to use their own money to buy cards. If things were over prices, the devs would know about it. I imagine that for the new Dungeon Keeper the devs set out to make their game, and under management mandate they were required to implement certain features to cost certain amounts of gems, and then in another room the accountants arbitrarily decided arbitarily on a price per gem...

I guess the lesson here is that if you want to blur the line between the game itself and the pricing mechanism, you need to also blur the line between game developer and game producer.

Actually I think that it's the 20+ year history of card games being pay to win and super over priced that are helping hearthstone. If it wasn't for that I don't think anyone would think hearthstones model is acceptable.

But yeah. Better then this. (Although perhaps the title is a bit off, since Dungeon keeper is still a good game. Just a poor... Uh. Whatever this would be called.)

Ok, so molding the consumer helps too.
Actually that is very worrying, because when the next EA micro-transactions game comes out people will be saying "Wow, this is so much cheaper than Dungeon Keeper!"
Oh god, please don't let it be Populas!

Actually this topic made me remember having downloaded that onto my phone, so i played it yesterday, it's not as bad as the article made it out to be, regular soil takes 5 seconds to dig out and the majority of the map is regular soil, while most of what you can do is rather time limited, such as taking a hour to upgrade low level buildings and possibly days at higher levels that's actually a good thing, as the absolute worst part about most 'social' games is the repetitive grinding of stuff that takes a short time, but which you do very often. The lack of things to do in dungeon keeper is a great feature! Well ok you could grind invading other peoples dungeons for very small quantities of gold and stone to pay for your upgrades, but when they take so long to finish you really don't need to grind to get them done.
But I agree that freemium games are cash grabbing exploitation of people with the same psychological problem as gambling addicts.
I read an article about the sims social that made me think it was far worst, costing 6 real dollars to build a bookshelf FFS.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I already have one 'wait to fight' thing that I've had a passing interest in, since it looks alright on a tablet and it has enough stats to be semi-interesting if I'm bored for a few minutes. Technically two, but one is honestly more of a dragon breeding sim with padded times.

I don't mind your honesty Mark, but if I really wanted to play DK, I'll go get DK. Or wait for WFTO.

Even boingboing is hating on it.  :)

The problem is that all the future generations of gamers are going to experience this as the default. They are going to grow up in a world, in which people actually think this is what gaming is like. That social engineering and scamming people is an acceptable way of doing business. It's not! It's a scam... done by sick people who have nothing left in their lives other than selfish greed. They should be thrown in jail for deceptive business tactics, and not featured in the app store as an Editors' Choice.

There's probably this group of people who are constantly boycotting EA, and they love it when stuff like this happens because it means more short-timers join their cause and boost their forums and e-petitions. But over time the noise dies down and it's just the same few people sitting around in Steve's den eating oatmeal cookies Jeremy baked. Until the next EA catastrophe! Kind of like superheroes, except not super and not heroic.

I don't see how its possible to boycott EA, most of the people who bitch about EAs practices or impact don't buy EA games to begin with. Last EA game I bought was Spore, and that wasn't even a boycott. Nothing else they have made/produced is even marginally interesting to me.

Isn't EA the patron of sports, though?

They do produce roughly enough sports games to go to the moon and back six times each year.
