1st Granite 132

Ah spring. I can almost smell the hippies coming with our sunshine... or else.
It's been an uneventful winter. The goblins left peacefully shortly after my last entry without their leader, and once we'd (FINALLY) got rid of that annoying Lizard Demon, things started to run smoothly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He toppled some statues and broke a miner's ankle.

A cave crocodile did kill 3 dwarves though, before being put down by the militia engaging the Demon.

All entrances to the caverns have been sealed.
All exits to the outside, apart from the main gate and the trap hallway with a bridge in front, have been sealed. I still need to do something about all those unfinished towers, though.

The crafting area has been built, and the kitchens are coming along as well. The forges... not so much. COME ON YOU STUPID MINERS! YOU KNOW THE STONE'S JUST WARM BECAUSE OF THE MAGMA UNDERNEATH IT!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th Granite 132

It took me personally going down there and sitting through the process with the miners, constantly reassuring them, but now we finally have forges! Proper ones with magma! Or, at least, we have the space to put them in. I've got a lot of anvil-dragging ahead of me...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26 Granite 132

I decided that with our upcoming production of weaponry and armour, it would probably be smart to have a military to give them to. I went around, asking if anyone had any idea how to use any weapons, and discovered that quite a few of my fellow dwarves were quite handy with hammers and spears and maces. They were drafted immediately, into a military I have re-organised. No more shall our Hammerdwarves receive spear training, or vice-versa!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The hospital has also been moved and expanded. Each patient will have his own room, each room will have its own surgery table and traction bench. Eventually. I've also ordered some nest boxes for the poultry tunnels in the kitchen.

It's okay. I was just got quite a bit upset and wanted to find out who had called in the Toad. I had suspected it was you and I wanted to know why, If it had been you, I would've barred you from continuing to participate but since it wasn't, I'm going to apologize instead.  I apologize, I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions, even though I would've locked the thread even if I hadn't.

I'd argue it isn't important who did. I thought about it, but did not want to bother the mods. Whoever did so was acting reasonably; this is not the appropriate place for that stuff.

Edit:
Quote
( I'm also going to look into procuring an apology gift.)

That is a kind thought, but there is no need. Please don't bother.
:tidE

Quote
Further, whoever did report me to the Toad, fuck you! Go the hell away you spineless jellyfish! What I said was not that offensive, nor was it even abnormally belligerent. Moreover it wasn't going to derail the thread, at best it would've ran concurrently to updates for about two weeks. Moreover, the person I said it to wasn't even fucking offended and it's not like I was cussing her out or some shit. Rat-fink bastards.

That is completely uncalled-for and out of proportion. Cool your jets, come back with a clear head, and please consider apologizing.

Also, do not misinterpret my refusal to rant back as anything other than a personal commitment to civil discourse, even in the face of provocation. Do not take my reluctance to bother the devs as tacit acceptance. As I said before, this is not an appropriate place for this. This is a place for silly dwarf stories.

Quote
(--> skip rant <--)

For the sake of the fort, and in Armok's unhallowed name, please take it somewhere else if you must go on like this.

Quote
By the way, I hope you didn't mind Ridiculously Stereotypical Jewish Mother Dorf calling you "Iggy," even if it did happen in an imploded alternate timeline.
Not at all. The imploded timeline was rather good. It might spawn a set of spin-off stories, similar to how Spearbreakers did.

Actually, that was addressed to itg; apologies if that was confusing.

With that, I think that I'm going to recuse myself from further participation in this thread; it would seem I've inadvertently caused enough trouble already. Good day to you all, and Skullsploder? Sounds like you're doing a better job than I did (-: . Rock on.

Danger? WHAT DANGER? Murderpaddles is a perfectly safe, stable dwarvish settlement. Ah.. yes... just, um. Just step around that werewarthog corpse, if you would. Oh and if one of you could move that Demon corpse from the stairway, that would be lovely. Welcome to your new home! Furnaces are down the stairs. Just keep going down, if you reach the room whose floor is magma, you've gone too far. GET SMELTING!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Time to play the waiting game. Armok will be displeased, but without a large military, and without serious traps, I'm afraid we have no choice but to hole up and pray that our farms get up and running.

Oh yes that. I forgot to mention it previously, but the farms are practically nonexistant. We have hundreds of strawberry seeds, but no defensible aboveground farms, and next to no plump helmet spawn. Hopefully the crop turnaround will be fast enough, and I'm ordering some of our finite wood supply be turned into potash for fertilising our few farm plots.

Otherwise there
I've just been informed of the arrival of a second group of hostiles.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At best, they'll create enough of a distraction for us to get the elven caravan with all those lovely logs inside. At worst, the goblins will rush straight for the gate before these lazy sons of carp get that thrice-damned-by-Armok lever pulled, and then the necromancers will resurrect the corpses!

Oh no... the corpses... we haven't finished moving the refuse inside! our only hope is that the goblins kill the necromancers before they can get in sight of the humungous piles of rotting body parts in front of our gates.

Try to catch the necromancers, so we can wield the powers of undeath for ourselves!

Nah, the 2 pages of goblins re-slaughtered the 5 pages of undead with ease :/ The cleanup is gonna be intense. My current fort has occasional zombie sieges and I still haven't finished atom smashing all the corpses from the first one.

EDIT: Besides autobutcher, is anything else turned on that I should know about? I have absolutely no familiarity with DFhack commands and such, I only ever use it for designating exploratory mining.

19th Malachite 132

A Forgotten Beast is blocking the continued construction of my most recent super-secret forge-enhancing project. The militia are being stationed, ready to mete out death to the interloper. Once they are mustered the way back will be blocked until such time as the Beast is dead

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

11 Galena 132

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The battle for the slightly more efficient hauling system begins.
Six of the seven military dwarves currently serving the fort are have just engaged with the Forgotten Beast Gathre Letobaktur, Bootsjackals - an enormous, feathered, poisonous crab with large mandibles. Luckily its slobber isn't poisonous, because it is slavering.

12 Galena 132

After a day of fighting, the beast is dead.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No dwarf is even mildly injured. Wait... marksdwarf? could it be...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our fort has its new badass.
She is the perfect dwarf. She shall have a title fit for her status! This title shall be Resident Badass, to be passed on immediately to the first dwarf to surpass her in significant kills (i.e. kills of forgotten beasts and powerful demon monsters).

Progress on the super secret... oh what the hell, it's a drop chute for meltable goblin armour and such. By the time anyone reads these journals it'll be common knowledge anyway. The drops will all fall onto a hatch 1z level above the collection square. The collection square will be set to give to a stockpile with a single wheelbarrow, which in turn will be set to give to the main Quantum Stockpile for smelting (and to take from links only). The corridor the hauler will have to pass through to access the collection square will have a single pressure plate in it, linked to the hatch. Thus, every time an item is taken off the stockpile, some more will be added, and all this without risk to the hauler! (the pressure plate is far enough away from the bottom of the chute that the hatch will have retracted and unretracted before the hauler reaches the stockpile).

In addition, a similar pressure plate based system has been put in place for garbage disposal in the main refuse room. Each time a dwarf accesses the refuse chamber via the airlock, they step on a pressure plate which activates the atom smasher. Thus, the atom smasher is regularly and safely activated without the need for any oversight.

18th Galena 132

The invaders have packed up and gone home. I guess they're afraid of turtles. Now the dwarves will FINALLY be able to place the hundreds of unnamed re-killed dwarf corpses in their coffins.

Lots of news, lots of news, all of it good. Some dwarf got possessed and made this:

This weapon will be PERFECT for the Captain of the Guard - it even has the name to match: Painfulwhiskers the Responsibility of Execution.
Note to self: assign bone axe to guard captain.

And, more importantly
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After much deliberation, I decided that there was only one dwarf in the fort truly up to the task.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1st Opal 132

Well, this is it. My tenure as overseer is up. I feel I've actually made a difference to this fort. All the projects I started have been completed and implemented successfully, the military has been reorganised, and dwarves have been given job specialisations, rather than each dwarf attempting every job. We now have the space and infrastructure for a large-scale metalworking industry, the swiss cheese mountain has been plugged up, the caves have been sealed off, the hospital has been moved, expanded, and given the proper equipment (although the mechanics were too busy with traps and such to make traction benches) our farms are actually producing now, and the refuse stockpile has been mostly atom smashed.

Unfortunately, I was not, in my time as overseer, able to produce enough coffins to bury the hundreds of dwarf corpses littering the fortress and surrounds. That should be made the top priority of whichever poor schmuck has to run this place next, as several dwarves had limbs removed and three were even killed by the plethora of angry ghosts inhabiting our home.

And one other thing: we need more greaves. I'll be sure to remind the next overseer of that regularly, as Baron of Murderpaddles.

ooc: alright, I'm done. The fort is running very well now if I may say so myself. I will edit with save link as soon as I get the account activation email.

Alright, I will now be able to start taking turns, since my Demongate turn is over.

Sure. It's your turn I believe, and then Escondida gets another shot if she wants it, if not we loop around to ShadowHammer. I don't feel like taking a turn... so. As per Gwozdiuch, I haven't heard anything from him in quite some time. If he shows up, then I guess I'll have to flip a coin to see who goes first.

Here is that save. There is a tiny chance that this may actually be at the end of Autumn, rather than mid-winter. In that case tell me and I'll give a quick explanation of how to finish the quick-drop chute.

OK. I’ll take up this save, preferably not going to see the crazy kind of fortress Demongate was over my turn.

HANG ON. Is this using a tileset that is different from ASCII? Because if so, that’s going to be screwy.
YES IT IS. Can someone please fix the tileset back to normal ASCII? It involves restoring the old raws.

Actually, you’ve given me the early autumn save too. Maybe you can go and fix both the save and the raws, so they I don’t have a bunch of ë’s depicting marble layers?

1st Whenever, Whenever

<post will be added here>
Screw it, waiting on fixed save. Damn that’s a lot of dead dwarves, it will start impacting migration due to bugs.
