Sorry for doublepost but... here goes my my tour /ooc
The fortress is starting to look back on track! The goblins have gone... we're beginning to forge with magma... everything is looking great! All thanks to Escondida. If only we could've -
"SKULLSPLODER WAKE UP!"
"Wha?"
"You're the new overseer!"
"But the last one's still got another season before the end of her term!"
"The last overseer's term ended today.
"What?"
"JUST GET OUT THERE AND DO SOME OVERSEEING! GET RID OF THE GOBLINS AND SHIT!"
"..."
"GO!"
Godsdammit, must have been a dream.
Journal of Overseer Skullsploder 1st Moonstone 131I could retch. I have to see the rest of this place, but the walk from my room to my meagre forge to the dining room is pukeworthy enough as it is. Armok save me.
Well, the whole fort is a shambles. What else can you expect from this grand tradition of having a completely new leader with a completely different plan every single year?
First they show me the trade depot... where a bunch of dwarves are trapped with no way off, because some genius of a dwarf mined out the floor around it. I order a clay "bridge" built immediately. I also notice that the depot walls to the outside have holes in them. Great, bring some more clay.
Next I'm shown the animal pens. Peafowl. Wonderful. And a goblin. There is a goblin inside an unsealed room in the fortress. I order the... two... marksdwarves to feather him while he's still unconscious. Our military has 2 men. I'll have to fix that.
I'm shown the farms and I'm not impressed. Less than half our lackluster farming space is dedicated to food, AND WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FOOD. So, on the logic of food>clothes, I've ordered all dimple cups and pig tails to be replaced by plump helmets, at least until our food situation is slightly better.
I've seen most of the rest many times before, but we do a more comprehensive tour of the catacombs - not nearly enough coffins down there - and take a look at the caverns. BY ARMOK I thundered at my guide when I realised that there were open holes to the caverns - no drawbridge or anything. I immediately ordered those holes patched up with whatever stone available.
Finally, we take a look at the depths. My measly single magma forge and smelter, and... and a room whose floor is a magma flow. Huh. Well, looks like its time the smith was in charge, I'll have this fort producing tonnes of the finest steel in no time!
2nd Moonstone 131I've ordered a much larger area dug out for use in forging and smelting. My plan is to establish a metalworking industry based on those useless weapons and armour those goblins bring. But we'll never get enough coal to do that on the surface, so to the depths it is!
13 smelters and 13 forges. What could go wrong?
Since we're not going to need the forges up top anymore, I've ordered that room to be expanded so that we can use it for crafting.
While I was up there, I noticed how segmented and disorganised our kitchens are. That'll be fixed in no time. Just apply open-plan architecture liberally.
As for the goblins, well, we simply don't have the manpower or equipment to do anything about them. We'll have to just wait them out. With the food we're buying from the traders and our farms starting to produce something useful, waiting here shouldn't be a problem.
