Well! Turns out I had real life stuff happening after all. Winter is done, and I'm working on spring tonight. Here's winter.

Should I end the year at next winter (assuming the fort survives), or hang on until the new year? I'm fine either way.

Oh, and here's the very first thing I saw when I opened the fort:

Aaaaaargh! Oh, and the goblin forces are lead by their demonic law-giver. Lovely. Thankfully, they seem to be idling in the hallway.

Spoiler: Just hangin' out (click to show/hide)

First impressions aside, let's dive in! I picked a newly-crippled mechanic who recently lost all of her kids for my dwarven alter ego, since if the fortress is going to survive, we need defense first and foremost:

Spoiler: Dumed Whippedrings (click to show/hide)

From the desk of Dumed "Escondida" Whippedrings, Acting Overseer of Murderpaddles

My dearest Stinthäd,

I hope this letter reaches you before you set out for Murderpaddles. I pray daily to Rít and Rîsen that it will.

I am writing to tell you that you must never, ever come to this damned place. Murderpaddles has already taken so much from me that I couldn't bear it if it were to take you, too. Stinthad, [the writing here is illegible] our children are dead. Ïngiz and both Siguns. [Illegible] Most days it's all I can do not to swipe a scalpel from the doctor and cut my own throat. You were right. Moving here was a terrible idea. For your own sake, please, please stay away.

I've attached a few pages of my journal, and a few illustrated legal documents I took when they foisted the job of overseer on me. They even gave me a noble pseudonym to go with it: Escondida. Apparently, I'm one of the few sane adults left in the fortress, so the job fell to me despite the fact that I can still barely walk after losing my leg. And because I am now responsible for these people, I beg you: take my journal and these documents to the Court. We need help here, badly.

I love you. I'll always love you, but let this letter be goodbye.

Yours always,
Dumed

1st Moonstone

Winter. I've always hated winter, and now more than ever. I can feel the chill in my bones; the meager blanket the hospital provides me doesn't help. The stump where my leg used to be aches constantly. But the phantom pain of my leg is nothing. Every time I think of my children, I break down. Stinthäd, if only I'd listened to you! Gods, I miss him. Damn this place. No, every god has already damned this place. All that is to be found here is death and misery and more death.

2nd Moonstone

The mayor came to me today. He's just a boy, barely older than Ïngiz. They're friends, I think, but I can never remember his name. He tries to be friendly, but mostly he just leaves me cold.

After making awkward small talk, he finally told me why he'd come: most of the population is dead, ghosts are walking the halls, goblins and a [illegible] are beating down our doors, and they want me to take the blame for the fall of the fortress. I'm to be the new overseer, despite the fact I can't even stand.

When I raised that objection, he looked shifty and said that he'd think of something. I didn't like the sound of that, so I asked him to fetch me the remaining corps of masons, architects and mechanics. There is no way a handful of untrained civilians, many of them nursing wounds, can hold out against an army, let alone a demon, so we're going to do things my way: first, we bar the doors against them with something truly impassible, like a bridge. Then we will cave the mountain in on them. I refuse to let Murderpaddles fall. I refuse to let anyone else suffer as I have.

3rd Moonstone

Just as the masons finished the bridge to bar access to the fortress and the mechanics finished hooking it up and were set to pull the lever, one of the three remaining soldiers came running in. He'd been taking potshots at the goblins' [illegible] leader from a safe vantage point, and after dodging every bolt, [illegible] and the goblins just left. Just like that.

Spoiler: Yeah, get out of here (click to show/hide)

It seems too convenient. [illegible] I don't like it.

I have the masons building walls so that we can better control the path enemies take into the fort, in the event of a breach, so that hopefully it will be possible to shut them out before it's too late.

10th Moonstone
Construction continues. [illegible]

[A diagram of some sort appears to have been badly water damaged]

Re-read some of diary. On 2nd Moonstone, I wrote about Ïngiz as though she were alive. Gods. I completely forgot. I spent most of that day hoping one of the kids would come see me. [Illegible] in the river.

15th Moonstone

The walls are mostly finished; traffic should enter through one of two hallways. Already have a bridge up to block one inner doorway.

I heard screams in the hall today. My nurse told me that a cave crocodile had somehow gotten into the fortress and was attacking people left and right. I told him to get the damned militia after them, but he reminded me that most of them were dead. So many friends...gone. I shouted at him to get whoever was alive to do it, then, and he did go, though with a baleful look. I'll have to keep an eye on him. I should've kept calm, though.

Spoiler: What now? (click to show/hide)

20th Moonstone
Apparently, the outpost liaison from the Mountainhomes was so happy to have survived the seige that he's going to petition to have Murderpaddles made a barony. The man seems a touch addled, though; I hope he tells them how things really are here. We need help, not titles. I let the mayor pick a candidate for baron; he chose one of his teenaged friends. If not for the fact that poor Sarvesh Holdmirrored, his chosen candidate, lost both parents and one of her siblings recently and now has to provide for all of her other siblings, it would be adorable. As it is, I'm just glad she'll be able to keep them all fed.

Spoiler: The Baroness (click to show/hide)

25th Moonstone
Finally, we opened the gates again! The fresh air seems to have everybody feeling better already.

With luck, there'll be time to design some surface defenses before the next attack comes. I just wish I could help more, instead of being stuck in this bed.

Spoiler: Open the gates! (click to show/hide)

1st Opal
They gave me a crutch! I'm finally walking again! It's slow going and still painful, but it's so good to be moving under my own power again! Apparently the mayor talked one of the doctors into letting me out early!

To celebrate, I immediately got very drunk, then went outside to survey the battlefield.

Somehow, a turkey caught outside during the violence managed to survive. I was inspired to write a haiku.

I then went down to the caverns to try and discover how that cave crocodile got in. It turns out that one of the staircases goes straight through a cavern and is completely unguarded! I immediately ordered some walls and traps erected.

Spoiler: Walls and Traps (click to show/hide)

Finally, I went down to the Necropolis. So many dead in so short short a time. I think this place may be evil.

I couldn't find my childrens' graves.

I did find a number of unmarked graves: coffins built for the nameless dead raised by the necromancers who plague this land.

10th Moonstone
Sarvesh, the soon-to-be-Baroness, was found dead today. A troll snuck in through the cavern entrance before the traps were finished.

I immediately ordered what was left of the militia to attack the beast.

20th Moonstone

The troll's reign of terror continues. The militia claim to have been picking up their equipment for the past ten days. A miner taking a rest in the tunnels managed to cut the troll's hand off, though.

Spoiler: Mine that troll! (click to show/hide)

The militia finally deigned to show up, but did so one at a time and without any bolts for their crossbows. They were killed quickly.

Spoiler: The glorious charge (click to show/hide)

Luckily, a true hero emerged. One dwarf stood firm and did more harm to that troll than any other managed to, and emerged completely unscathed despite having been tossed against a wall...twice. That dwarf was a tantruming child. Somehow, the beast managed to survive the furious onslaught, but not without some serious injuries.

Spoiler: The Trollpuncher Comes (click to show/hide)

1st Obsidian

I ordered every dwarf who wasn't a skilled laborer or a child to take up arms and attack the still-rampaging beast, when the news I had been dreading came:

Spoiler: The dead walk (click to show/hide)

I immediately ordered everyone inside, but one of the new militia was still caught outside, and died heroically.

When I wondered where the rest of the new recruits were, when they should have been fighting the troll, I was informed that they were already dying in bed from their encounter. I...I can't believe this.

10th Obsidian

The troll is finally dead. It wandered into a falling rock trap which for some reason was constructed in the middle of a wide public thoroughfare. If not for the fact that it has clearly proved its usefulness, I would have it taken down, but as it is, I'm just happy that the troll is dead. Maybe now we can start to rebuild our lives, even as the dead bang down our doors.

31st Obsidian

While getting supplies for the New Years party, many people came to me with reports that they had been terrified by a zombie. I was afraid that the monster was in the fortress somehow, but it turns out that they had seen it through holes inexplicably knocked in the walls of the trade depot.

Spoiler: Holey moley (click to show/hide)

This has only strengthened my resolve. The coming year will see the revival of Murderpaddles, even if it costs me my life!

I'll hopefully have a post up tonight; sorry for the delay.

By the way, are there any outstanding requests to be dwarfed? If anybody wants to have a dwarven alter ego, I can make it happen! Just...y'know, don't be too picky, since the troll took out at least 10 dwarves (even after the miner and the Trollpuncher crippled it) before it finally wandered into that trap.

Ack. Apparently summer = less free time than school. Remove me from the list or put me on hold indefinitely, I'll get back to you whenever I get a free week. Wish I could throw in a "Holy Schnike!".

I'll take a dwarf, no preferences. Lyeos, obviously.

Aww... that's too bad. I do understand what you mean though, I just thought that was only me because of moving and preparing for college and such.

Sure. I think Escondida still has the save and he said he'd be looking for dwarf requests.

I think Escondida still has the save and he said he'd be looking for dwarf requests.

She, actually (-: . And yeah, I've dwarfed those who've requested it (including one a few pages ago).

The Spring was relatively uneventful thanks to Turtle Power. If this keeps up, I should be able to pose summer and fall tomorrow.

I did a pretty thorough audit of dwarf jobs; hopefully things should run a little more smoothly. Since dfhack was clearly set up already (autobutcher started automatically (despite there being no butchers' shops)), I also went ahead and set up the growth bug fix to run monthly in $save_directory/raw/init.lua. Finally, construction on defenses continues; hopefully, future overseers will be able to wall in when need be.

So Dumed "Escondida" McLeglessMama died without my noticing at some point. As far as I can tell, she stepped into some deadly gunk that was lying around, got paralyzed, and quickly suffocated. Sooooo...the dwarves quickly convened and pointed fingers at the manager, deciding she'd be the new overseer...but that she'd have the same noble title, Escondida.

By the way, Alåth "Escondida II" Unolmosus is the mother of former overseer Zero, and you know what's really weird? In the relationships screen, Zero is listed as Alåth's youngest daughter, but Zero's personality page uses male pronouns, but Zero is married to a (dead) male dwarf. This is clearly a bug, but on the other hand, I so want to think that df has room in its heart for transmen (and transwomen, but I figure transman in this case, since only his mother thinks of him as female--likely a holdover from having raised him as a member his biological sex rather than of his gender) and room in its heart for gay marriage.

Oh, and here's what the surface looks like right now:

Oh, and please pardon my very, very poor Yiddish. I may or may not have encountered a real life Jewish Grandma (not mine) From Auld Country today, which may or may not have inspired the following narration.

From the desk of Alåth "Escondida II" Soulsroom, manager and acting overseer of Authoredmountains Murderpaddles

To my dearest Great Aunt Urist Uristurister
511 Plump Helmet Lane
Mountain Home, Auld Country Where Everything Was So Much Better Don't You Know  73537

Why me? What did I ever do to be named Overseer except to survive? And just because that farbisene old overseer kicked it! Ah, well, I'm sure everything will be fine. When things look dark, I just do what I always do: admire that lovely door dear Zero had put in my office when he was Overseer. I'm so proud of him, since he became Chief Medical Dwarf. Such nakhas I get from this young man's career! I always wanted a son who was a chief medical dwarf. Of course, Avuz always wanted him to be a stonecrafter like him, but I'd say to him "What's the point? You know better than anyone that stonecrafters get no respect in this life. Now a doctor, there's a respectable job." Ah, I miss Avuz.

So anyway, I felt such a draft in the halls this morning, I went to find out where it was coming from, and would you believe it? There were two holes right to the surface, and us in the middle of an attack by zombies! Who knows what could've happened if the necromancers had thought to bring some flying animals or really big things with them! So, I went to the head of the Masons' Guild and told him the problem, and mensch that he is he fixed it up right away!

Spoiler: Such a draft! Brr! (click to show/hide)

Oh, and that nice liaison from the Mountainhomes (what is he still doing here?) came to tell me that we'd been made an official land of the realm! The fellow seems a bit meshugga to me, though, making us a barony without a baron, but what can you do?

Well, after that, I went down to the hospital in the magma sea just to see if was still there, you know, for old times' sake. It was, of course, and all the somehow exposed and yet safe magma flow flooring reminded me of that young klug of an overseer we had a few years ago, Itg (I think you pronounce it "Iggy"). I wonder whatever happened to him. I wonder whether any of the miners could make me a magma flow tile floor.

Spoiler: Iggy Was Here (click to show/hide)

Oh, and Aunt Urist, you wouldn't believe the darling amulet one of the kids made. What a little maven!

That image of a jewel got me thinking...why is it that we have five jewelers' workshops?

Well, just as I was finishing my walk, someone came up to me and told me some kind of creepy amphibian-looking corpse was harassing people. Of course, I went to check it out immediately, and what do you know? On top of the [redacted in the interest of public mental health --ed.] fortress---did I tell you about the [redacted] fortress?---there were a bunch of amphibian people just milling around! They weren't inside the walls, just on a ledge outside. It was very odd.

Ugh! And to top it all off, that mutsche of a Forgotten Beast had the gall to show up here again. Feh! Well, I told someone to close the gate to that cavern, just in case.

Spoiler: What a groyse klots (click to show/hide)

Feh, what a day...I'm going to schlep off to get farshikert.

Much love,
Alåth

P.S.: I won't bore you with the day-to-day of my job! So much paperwork you wouldn't believe!

...

UN-AC-CEPTABLE. It's one thing if you're going to murder all my favourite characters, that's fine, I can deal with that, but this time you have gone too far Dwarf Fortress!

FOR THIS BLATANT HERESY I WILL INFLICT MIND-SHATTERING, REALITY-WARPING DEATH MACHINES OF DOOM TO RESTORE EQUILIBRIUM TO THIS GOD-FORSAKEN FORTRESS!

This may sound terribly bigoted however, I don't give a flying damn. I have standards. Violence and bloodshed are fine, but when you get into blurring the lines of something as basic as gender we find ourselves mere spitting distance from a plethora of hentai, necrophilia or WORSE. NOT TO MENTION THE COMPLETE DEGRADATION OF THE LAST SANE ASPECT ATTRIBUTED TO THIS GAME!!! The only reasonable solution: INFLICT MORE VIOLENCE AND BLOODSHED TO REMIND THIS GAME OF ITS TRUE PURPOSE.

(( In less insane terms, I can't believe that I'm seriously the owner of the first fort with a legitimate transgender dwarf, I find it kind of a cruel joke. However, I have always considered cruel jokes to be the funniest and odds are I'm going to hell anyway, so lets just laugh... at those odd little coincidences that our minds ascribe extraneous meaning to, yea? ))

(( ... And after all, isn't self-mutilation par the course of this game? Hehhehheh... ))

Could I please be added to the overseers list? I think I did ask a couple of pages back but that was just before a very long spell with nothing happening :P
You may. In fact, you're next. Grab the save if Escondida is done.

I'm going to try and finish out the year, but for now must get to work.

Let's not hate on the transdorf; transfolks take enough crap as is irl, let alone in a brutal fantasy world. I pointed this out because it's something I've never seen in df, not as a judgment.

Update coming sometime tonight!

Calm yourself, CMC! Obviously a certain someone from your RtD is now affecting your game! I suggest tossing dice at him!

It's kinda funny, though...

And all those zombies... I need to read back a few pages and figure out how things got like this!

Oooookay. I'm just gonna pretend  that that vitriol and misinformation-laden rant never happened and proceed with the Summer and Autumn Annals (no, I'm not going to do a silly Confucius character just because I referred to his works). For the record, as someone who's known a fairly large number of transfolks over the years--none of whom were self-hating, self-mutilating, or spoke in funny voices (except when doing impressions, of course)--and since I do my best to be an ally, I'd be glad to serve as an educational resource if need be. And, just to close things off on the proper note, whatever you think, just remember: someone is always wrong on the Internet!

Now...back to silly dwarf stories! Alas, tonight I was too lazy and tired to look up Yiddish words. Summer and fall were pretty uneventful; mostly, I spent the time on more infrastructure improvements, better farms, moving forging down to the magma sea, and starting to train up the new armor/weaponsmith and abusing conservation of matter (we really need masterful steel gear). I think that I've plugged all the holes, at least for now.

Once I've posted the write-up for winter along with the save (tomorrow, hopefully), I'll also include a few places that really need long-term improvements but that I haven't been able to get to because the zombies keep clogging the weapon traps faster than the dorfs can unclog them!

From the desk of Alåth "Escondida II" Unolmosus

Dear Great Aunt Urist Uristurister,

I suppose it's for the best, but there's not too much new here at Murderpaddles. Everyone seems to be much happier than they were when I took over, and only one person died!

I convinced the engravers to get to work making those slabs of theirs for all those poor dead dwarves, and it's such an odd thing! A lot fewer people have come screaming into my office terrified by ghosts since they started doing that! Oh, and I also figured we might as well move everyone who's still up and about into those wonderful new bedrooms. So much more spacious! You can really stretch your legs in one of those. Of course, I haven't moved my own quarters yet. It's important that everybody know that just because I do bookwork I don't think I'm some kind of fancy-pants noble.

Now, you won't believe this, but I was going over the accounts, and I'd swear that the new armorsmith made a couple of pairs of chain leggings from a bar of steel each, then someone else came and melted them for some reason and there were three bars of steel! That can't be right.

Zero told me we needed soap for the hospital or more patients would die from little infections, so I had some of the young ones (they grow up so fast!) build an ashery and a soap maker's workshop by the hospital. Already that poor farmer who needed stitches on his eyeball is looking so much better!

Oh, and I know you'll love this. Remember how you used to play tricks on the elves who'd come from the forest retreat, you know, pulling the bridge out from under them or opening a path to a firebreathing dragon? Well, it's nothing near so creative, but a couple of pranksters have been playing jokes on the zombies. They'll unlock a door, wait for the zombies to walk into the traps until the traps jam, and then lock the door! Any other time, I'd say that that's just not playing nice, but somehow I just don't mind it when it happens to zombies! Maybe it's the constant moaning. Ah, but I shouldn't kvetch your ear off.

Lyeos, the miner, came to tell me that they'd finished building walls and traps in the second cavern and had started digging out a new field to grow mushroom trees in. Naturally, I asked if we'd get more farm space, and what do you know? He told me that the farmers had already rebuilt the farms! I hope they planted sweet pods.

Now, I'm no prude, but when it comes to dwarves walking around in only their beards, I just won't have it. I asked the clothiers to make a bunch of clothes from all that cloth we've been saving up. Oh, and a weaver made just the kitschiest coat I've ever seen.

It was such a shame to do it, but we just had too many animals running around the fort. Almost as many as people! We've been putting a lot of dead dwarves' pets out of their misery. I was pretty down about that until I had this scrumptious biscuit made from Muffy the cat!

Other than all that, things have been pretty quiet around here. Just about everybody is done mourning their losses, but it's still been slow getting the fort running again, since there are only about 30 of us to do all the work, and let me tell you, with all the dead bodies in the hall, clothes to be made, walls to be built, armor to be made, traps to put up, and ghosts to chase off, we have our hands full!

Well, ta for now! I'll write again around New Year's. Hope you're well. Say hi to the Underking for me!

Also, can't help you on the Yiddish sadly! ^^' The only thing I know in Yiddish is "Mentsch tracht, Gott lacht" which I'm decently sure I spelled wrong. It may not be Yiddish at all, actually.
