12th Limestone: Our troubles are not over yet. Those who lost their minds are now dying of thirst in great numbers. We knew this day was not far off, but it still was too much for some to take.

24th Limestone Burrow 5 has gone silent. The doors remain locked, because to see what happened there would be too much to bear.

19th Sandstone: Reg Dedukmishos became strangely secretive, speaking to no none and holing himself up in his workshop. He emerged some time later with a beautiful mechanism made of coal, of all things.

14th Timber: The goblins are back. Fortunately, I ordered the drawbridge to be rebuilt, so we took no casualties. Our brethren from the Mountainhomes deserve most of the credit for routing the goblin forces.

23rd Moonstone: The fortress has re-stabilized. Out of 180 dwarves, just 40 remain, and not one child. Those who survived were not the strongest, the most optimistic, or the most desensitized to tragedy. Those who survived were the ones who made few friends and kept busy. Let this be a lesson to future overseers: idle hands are the devil's playthings.

12th Opal: Morale is high enough that we can bury the dead children. The survivors could not be any further shocked by these horrors. In fact, the burials seemed to give them a sense of closure.

17th Obsidian: Libash Savotlor is struck by a fey mood! But there's no time for that, because the dead walk once more! We cannot fight the dead in the open. Instead, I have ordered the drawbridge raised and hastily drafted a squad of marksdwarves.

28th Obsidian: Our fortress has weathered the worst storm it is likely to face this year, but there is still much to do. I will step down and take the position of captain of the guard, leading our conscripted marksdwarves into battle myself. I leave the following suggestions to the next overseer:

--Get my marksdwarves to pick up and use their bolts. It's a tricky concept for a rookie soldier, as you well know, and I have not had the time to give them the careful tutoring they require.
--Libash has been demanding a tannery. Who knows what she intends to do there.
--The second cavern is only protected by a stone door. I recommend building a drawbridge in front of it, lest something particularly nasty wanders our way.
--I have ordered hundreds of stone blocks created, few of which I was able to put to use, due to circumstances. Make something worthy of our fortress.
--The zombies inside the curious underground structure all wandered off, except a few trapped on a ledge. It's move-in ready, and there's this beautiful sword at the bottom...
--Our military is in a sorry state. Shadowhammer, Kulet, and my marksdwarves are all we have left

Don't worry, we took care of that ambush, no problem. In other news, some jackass built the front gate wrong...

That would be me. I actually tested it out and worked OK, don't know what happened. Please don't use that language towards me.

I tried to do my best with the fort, when I took it the situation was a bit more difficult, still I didn't complain.

I'm sorry, I intended that to be lighthearted teasing. Tone doesn't come across well in a forum setting, unfortunately.

@ITG ok np, now time to catch up with the fort!

Yeah the drawbridge compromised an otherwise smooth mandate. Good job overall in managing the situation and progressing.
I particularly liked the magma-level forges and your office/bedroom there.

I'll give a look at the save to see whether we are too deep into a tantrum spiral situation or it is a situation we can recover from.
Yeah, because it seems that besides the mood situation the fortress is in good shape, rich in minerals and the food/drink supply should be OK.

Oh, and that kid who killed SanGennaro... I hope he's in the burrow 5 as well!

In the words of Stephen Fry: dear oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.

I'll have a swing at it later tonight, will try and post an update then.

Hehe, yeah, that kid got what was coming to him. He was beaten to death shortly afterward. I'm pretty sure the tantrum spiral is over, by the way. People aren't exactly ecstatic right now, but everyone is "content" or better.

Damn. I have this real life issue that's come up in the past few days, there's this female human who wants me to come over to her apartment tonight, for no reason. I doubt she even dwarfs. So there's that, and I totally spaced that I'm going to my folks' place on Sunday. Saturday might be good, but I probably won't be able to have the report up until Monday. If that's cool then monday it is, otherwise someone can just take my turn. I'll get back to y'all on Saturday.

@Magnus: Oh. Sorry man. I understand. Actually, since I wanted to experiment with some trap systems I've been studying up on, do you mind if I go ahead and take a second turn before your turn? I mean, you'd get to go right after I was done. Then you'd have the whole of next week to build up your fortress. I definitely understand wanting to spend time with family and I would just wait for you, but... I'm really excited about shredding goblins! ^_^ So, then... I'll go ahead and get the save file and start playing, and if you decide it bothers you, then I'll just throw out that file instead of reuploading. ( Besides, there's always the chance that I screw everything up. )

@Everyone else in the thread:
If you know anybody who wants to play a Succession fort, please feel free to recruit 'em. The more rulers, the more fun. :3 Also, I'm really sorry about not getting the journals done. >.< I'm a perpetual procrastinator. Besides, I've gotten distracted by some other dwarfy endeavours. ( As per those who don't really care, which is probably most of you, ah well. )

EXCITING YEAR SO FAR.

Well, that's an inviting first sight. It's SanGennaro splattered on an engraving of Urvad! Nice to see some cooperation between former Overseers, even if posthumous. Anyway, this begins my turn.

Heisenberg here. It's the first of Granite. As is the perrogative of General Suvascatten, I have come to minimize further causalities from invading dead. I am to gear Ardesonol into a mass siege engine. Well. Straight to work. I'm working via correspondance, of course. I'm not about to go in there myself during a siege. Fortunately, I'm no longer bound to a mere corporeal form. None the less, I must be carried in by a living dwarf. What an unfortunate blow to productivity.

Heisenberg here. Third of Granite. Let the circular saws roll. Metalsmith is forging them ad infinitum. I have heard tell of a nice design known as a goblin grinder. I believe I can implement one quite easily. However, I do worry about the potential for a miasma influx should such a device be implemented. However, due to the current state of affairs and the jewelry district being off-limits, I shall implement one straight away. Also, upon my examination today, I have discovered something of interest Eribletmos, a legendary mechanism. It seems to me that it wouldn't be of particular value due to being comprised of bituminous coal. However, the craftsdwarfship is legendary.

Heisenberg here. For now, I have decided to forgo the promotion to barony. We simply do not have a large enough workforce to accomidate that. Perhaps the next overseer shall implement this.

Heisenberg here. The deliberations between Mayor and liasion appear to be done. I expect the Mayor to be out eliminating the zombie pests posthaste.

Heisenberg here. It is the 23rd of Granite, I have added necessary areas such as the Jeweler's district and the well to the main burrow. In addition I have managed to locate the lever controlling the main drawbridge... I am about to attempt something extremely dangerous. If I fail, I will be called a fool for the rest of my afterlife, as well as having many new enemies on this side of death. If I succeed, I will be lauded as the military genius I always was. A note to those who come after me, I have added two new levers. They currently serve no function. Well then, it is time to lower the drawbridge. I hope that the good Mayor moves quickly enough to be out of the fortress in time to raise the bridge with no casualties. This will take very precise timing. If it succeeds, we have an immortal soldier whom the undead will totally ignore. If it fails, we will lose a soldier or two. It is, not a particularly nice risk, but a necessary one to break this siege. And the siege must be broken to allow for preparations against future sieges so that they do not impede progress here. The general is particularly interested in this place Ardesonol, what his interest is... I cannot guess. Here goes nothing. PULL THE LEVER!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Heisenberg here. SUCCESS! My gambit paid off, our vampiric mayor is outside the gates. We only appear to have lost a single dwarf, though based on observation it wasn't even from this action. I cannot find the corpse or even a proper missing report... And there have been no crimes reported. However, at last count we were a dwarf short. Well, you win some, you lose some. I might meet him here in the afterlife. It is now the 25th of Granite and the Siegebreak begins in earnest. :)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Heisenberg here. The vampire's success makes me happy. Eight zombies have been slain thusfar. That's not what I write this entry for, however. Today, the dwarf was officially reported missing. It has been one week since his disappearance. Today is the 28th of Granite. If the vampire continues her current killing trend, the siege should be broken by summer and with the preparations going on inside, it is not improbable to say that several excellent traps will be deployed. It remains to be seen, however, if I will have time to order the construction of any massive constructions. I have a plan for a tower from which to shoot corpses, a large water reactor that doubles as a flood device, and a field of spikes that can be triggered remotely via a nice lever inside the main fortress. In more mundane ambitions, I plan to delve a colony for the fortress's vampires. Based on their notes, it seems previous Overseers have a complete misconception about vampires. They are not evil beings, per se, they are just driven by uncontrollable urges, not unlike the living dwarf's urge to drink alcohol. Moreover, they are extremely useful and should be treated objectively. Urist herself is proving her use right now. Anyways, other mundane projects include the random Foe Liquifier, safety houses against raids, and perhaps proper barracks and living quarters. I can appreciate the current, minimalistic design, but it is simply not feasible to keep for more than ten years. Moreover, it gives the false impression of shabby leadership. My first priority is to make a defensible fortress though. Aesthetics may fall to other dwarves.

Heisenberg... today a terrible thing happened. A dwarf was striken with melancholy. Or so the general gossip says. I myself know full well what it is like to feel that one would accomplish more in death than in life. Even though it has proved true for me, I am the rare exception. It saddens me that a dwarf would be subjected to that deep darkness. I suspect it won't be long before he joins me. Perhaps he will find some comfort in the afterlife. To be denied his great and legendary work... how cruel the world can be.

Heisenberg. 11th of Slade. A mandate for 30 cloth shoes has been completed. While I'm writing, I might as well add that Urist has now gotten the number of undead foes down to 49.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Heisenberg here. 21st of Slade. Today has been eventful. The missing dwarf was found dead, drained of blood. Apparently, I didn't get Urist outside *quickly* enough. The body is causing a rather putrid funk that must be dealt with. However, I don't think it is a good idea to try to take the body outside just yet. Actually, what is it that dwarves do with bodies again? Oh yes, they bury them in coffins. Well then, that will be done posthaste.

More importantly! A forgotten beast has come! Though it is still far enough away, it is not as far as I would like. It seems to be a rather fearsome beast. Then again, all forgotten beasts do.

22nd: Alas, Urist has been struck down. She took down a good many before she went. Enough that I would feel comfortable with allowing another squad to go out and take care of the rest of the undead. The siege remains unbroken as of yet... However, we are much closer!

It is the 27th of Slade. I feel uncomfortable about the presence of the Forgotten Beast. I have dispatched The Murdered Paddles, our largest squad, to take care of it.

28th: The siege is finished! Every last undead creature on the surface has been terminated. I send the secondary squad to assist  the major squad. Then I'll lift the civilian alert, allowing the Dwarves to go outside for the first time in months.

Heisenberg here. It is the 17th of Felsite and an elven caravan has arrived. This is good as it means the blockade of the undead is finished.

Hematite:
Summer is upon Ardesonol. Several nice constructions are on their way. I am looking forward to the arrival of migrants. In the meantime, the dwarf who was struck with melancholy has died of thirst. My last project will be to make memorial slabs of previous overseers, heroes, and also this dwarf. Since the Forgotten Beast has sunk back into the depths for the moment, I am giving all the soldiers a furlough until they are needed. Ironically, this means they will likely be doing *more* work.

Traded two bins of gems and several of Urist's old vampiric trinkets for some strawberries, seed, and a caged tigerman. I really need to get the gem industry going again. I'll go ahead and unsuspend the gem-cutting jobs. Not much else useful in this caravan really. Anyways, we can't afford anything else.

It appears we have OFFENDED the elves by refused to fork over gems equal to 300 profit for them. I was willing to haggle and compromise, making my final offer at 125 profit. Sadly, no dice. The elves are now huffy, and I wouldn't be surprised if forty-billion exploding pigeons attack by Summer's End. I have always had respect for elves, but these traders don't listen to reason! Nor do most elves, I suppose. I was only trying to get a few barrels of wine and some seed, nothing drastic. Still, it's a small disappointment not to get it. So what if the elves don't want to trade anyway? There's always the Humans. Anways, off they go. We still got a pretty excellent deal with the tigerman anyway, although I think I saw the butcher eying him just a little too much...

19th: All of a sudden, spurred on by some miasma from a few misplaced corpses, no doubt, One Udib Bomreknelas has been struck by a fey mood. This doesn't seem good... (( OOC: You see... what happened was... I didn't realize that the dump pile was stationed in the middle of the crafts center. I thought it was still in the pit and being used for corpse storage... SO. Oops. Well, oh well, I fixed it. All of the corpses are now being dumped in the pit. And as for the fey mood, I'll handle it somehow. ))

21st: The fey dwarf has claimed a Carpenter's workshop and begun a mysterious construction.

Oh and also, the tigerman. Apparently he's an administrator. Sadly, I don't seem to be able to use him for administration.

(( Yes, my Overseer is named after Walter White, that's why the giant tower I'm building is going to be made out of microline. :P  The rest of my turn should be finished by tommorrow or the day after.))

For those who are wondering, if Magnus is able the next turn is his. After that I have some friends here who might want to go, but if not then play passes to Shadow Hammer again and so on with new people being added in at the end of the current player's turn. For example, if when Shadow Hammer finishes his next turn, SanGennaro still wants to play again and noone new has requested a turn, play passes to SanGennaro. If, at the end of SanGennaro's turn a new player wants to play, the play passes to the new player and any subsequent new players then picks up at the next previous overseer that wants another turn. That is, itg. So on and so forth until the fortress burns in a smouldering heap or noone else wants to play anymore. When noone else feels like playing anymore, I guess this thread will just die. I might make new efforts to recruit people, I might not. I don't think that the fortress will last longer than people's interest in it, so let's do this! ( Also, if you don't feel like taking a turn, just let me know and I'll move play onto the next player. When you want another turn, it will be treated as a new request. )

As per updates to Dwarf Fortress. When ToadyOne eventually updates Dwarf Fortress, we will upgrade to that version of the game. After that, all players are required to do so as well if they want to play.

If it gets to the point where no players want to actually play, but they do want to read about Ardesonol's adventures, then I may just abandon the fortress and adventure around a little. Then if we decide to play again we will reclaim. I haven't decided yet.

Current turn roster:
=CaptainMcClellan - done
=Shadowhammer - done
=SanGennaro - done
=itg - done
=CaptainMcClellan - in progress
=Magnus - If things have been busy.

@jrrocks: I keep forgetting to dorf you. I'll do that when the next wave of migrants come.

I have to say, I'm pretty excited about the tigerman. I hear a tigerman can be elected mayor if you can level up its social skills enough. He's probably got some catching up to do, though.

I would not suggest ditching the current fort right when the new version comes out. There will be a few months of bugfixes and lots of minor releases which may break save compatibility, which may mean a few false starts for the new fort. After the bugfixing phase is over, upgrading becomes a better option.

While I'm making suggestions, I think you should update the first post periodically to include the turn schedule, plus links to the reports of each completed turn. This will make it much easier for prospective overseers to orient themselves. See the "succession list" on the first post in Murdermachines, for an example of what I'd like to see.

Yeeeahhh... itg you're heart is going to be ripped out and stomped on with the next update. Much fun ( and some stupid ) has occurred. As per the updating the first post, I actually wasn't really that aware that was possible. I'll definitely do that as it's a much less annoying method of informing people. I'll get that update uploaded in a few minutes after I finish what has been a rather poor second half of a year. Just as my character was very embarrassed so shall I be.

25th Hematite, the Planter's fey mood produced Migrurthob, a cedar armor stand.

Heisenberg here. 2nd of Malachite. The miasma problem seems to be worsening. I fear for the mental well-being of the dwarves of Ardesonol.

Heisenberg here. Quite literally! At last I have arrived in a group of migrants. Finally after four months I can rule in person, even if from the posessed corpse of a migrant dwarf. Hmm. Might as well examine my host.

As a bonus, he appears to have an uncle already in Ardesonol. On the other hand... he has kids. I was never really good with kids when I was alive, and that's only gotten worse since death. Perhaps I will let his personality surface now and again when dealing with his wife and children.

I also suspect that we may have another vampire. He has many relatives, but not a single one came with him. He also seems to be suspiciously skilled. However, there's no need to jump to conclusions just yet. If anyone comes up missing then we shall deal with Edem Brainbolted.

Heisenberg here. 17th of Galena. A thief was spotted today. This breaks up nearly a month of monotony.

18th: A farmer has risen up as a ghost and s now attacking a marksdwarf. The human caravan also arrives.

21st: It appears I forgot to do something very vital: release the Tigerman from its cage. This is bad because apparently he died. Which reminds me, I have to engrave a stone for the ghost-dwarf's grave.

I am thoroughly satisfied. We have traded some gems for cheese, fruit, seed, and two silver bars. Henceforth, however, I think we shall reserve our gems. Perhaps, perhaps not.

Heisenberg here. Autumn has come and still most of the projects I set out to do are incomplete. However, I am not discouraged. Perhaps the tower will not be completed, but it shall at least be begun. Now, time to employ all the masons at the task of hauling stone to build the tower with. I believe the main task that slowed down the progress was dumping the corpses into the pit. Which reminds me, I still have to finalize some things regarding the self-same pit.

Heisenberg here. Joyous news!

Well that makes me a bit cross. The new mayor has taken it upon himself to beat a woodworker for not producing bucklers! Perhaps I should have him removed from office and beaten himself. I suppose the fault truly lies with me for not designating the production of bucklers to coincide with the mayor's mandate.

Hmmpf. Not only was the Woodcrafter sentenced to a beating, evidently he was sentenced to being beaten to death. This won't stand. As punishment, I am having the good mayor assigned to burial duty and relieving all other tasks for him. Then I shall have him begin the construction of the tower, all by himself. He will work for a month. Note, this is not slavery but punishment for excessive punishment. I haven't forgotten the dwarven laws.

13th of Limestone: Nearly all of the corpses have been dumped into the pit. The flood system I'm working on for getting rid of these quickly should they rise is nearly done. Construction hasn't yet begun on the tower. Today a Marksdwarf was found dead.  I hope the immigrants arrive soon, so I can speed up production on things like the field of spikes and the tower.

Heisenberg here. It is now nearly the end of Sandstone, and some new migrants have arrived. I am personally very thankful for this and think that they will soon be hauling stone.

Heisenberg here. It is now the first of timber and soon to be the end of Autumn. There is much left to be done.

Heisenberg here. 13th of Timber. Just when everything was going well... A zombie siege. Worse, there are no vampires this time. I am calling a civilian alert and calling up every militia squad we have. Hopefully this siege will not be as long as the last.

Heisenberg here. 21st of Timber. The goblin grinders are working great! They just keep dashing in, triggering the pressure plate, which opens the hatch into the chasm below, causing them to retreat straight into my weapon trap. While I doubt the siege is broken this year, I am satisfied that I have fulfilled my first priority. That said, I now turn inward to beautifying the fortress. I have sent woodcutters down into the caverns to fell tower-cap mushrooms to use as wood since the trees are currently inaccessable. That's a potential future project, an enclose tree grove that is accessable by tunnel. Why not? After all, the giant tower will be accessable from the main fortress. It wouldn't be too hard to delve an auxiliary tunnel to such a thing.

Anyways, the reason I'm writing is this: We have another strange mood dwarf. Otherwise I would be more busy working than writing. Later, possibly at the start of winter, I am going to check on the psychological health of the fortress. I don't want a repeat of the infamous "Burrow 5" incident that happened under the Oversight of "itg".

Heisenberg here. 24th of Timber. The Glassmaker has begun his project.

Heisenberg here. 27th of Timber... Bad news. The dead appear to have breached one of the Goblin grinders. I presume the mechanisms are stuck. Well, this is what we have soldiers for I guess. For honor and glory! Valor et justis!

Actually, it looks like it would be much easier to simply wall off that particular area. We will lose a few animals, but hopefully not any dwarves.

28th: Artifact completed, a legendary granite mechanism.

I move we change the symbol of the Twinkling Bolts and Ardesonol to that of a mechanism rather than that of a mountain. Still working to contain the breach of the undead.

Heisenberg here. 3rd of Moonstone. A wall was quickly put up by the masons blocking the undead from advancing further into the fortress. Unfortunately, at least four dwarves were on the other side of that wall. Among the casualties was the former leader "itg". Most of The Murdered Paddles is presumed dead. (( OOC: Well, it would appear the fun has come back around for itg. I'm sorry guy, I don't know what you did but the fort hates you. ))

Yeah, do you remember how I said that a wall was put up? Turns out that a small piece was missing from the wall and the undead are still getting in. A new wall has been set for construction and everyone on the other side was just drafted. This is bad...

And as if that weren't enough, some punk Dwarf child attacked me. This body can't handle two ghosts at once! I was able to calm the little bugger down when I promised that I'd have a memorial slab engraved.

Heisenberg... hanging on for dear life. (Metaphorically speaking. ) Today, on the 21st of Moonstone we broke the Undead siege. Exact casualties are not yet known but estimated to be between 8 and 11. The fortress is now flooded with miasma from the freshly redead. I realize now that I need to put safe-guards in place in case of future events like this month's. That will probably consist of my last actions as overseer of this fortress. I am a little bit disappointed that I did not get to finish all I set out to do, but mostly I am weary and in need of rest. I think I shall let the poor sap who's body I've been borrowing have it back and go welcome those who fell in battle. Hopefully not many of them decide to come back as poltergeists like the one who beat the crap out of me.

I have discovered that one of the founding memebers of Ardesonol was among the dead. Meng Dangledabbeys, our legendary carpenter, is dead.

Heisenberg here. 4th of Opal. Time's running out on the mayor's mandate for figurines. I have a dwarf making rock crafts, so hopefully he'll make one before I have to arrange an unfortunate accident. In the meantime, I have to get this miasma situation under control. A squadron of keas are making off with our iron bolts. Pesky keas. They're everywhere the little thieves. Forget kobolds, keas are the real thieves.

Heisenberg here. 9th of Opal. The mayor just passed a ban on the export of bucklers. That's fine, I wasn't planning to sell any. They're too valuable. Currently this is the state of the Miasma disaster:

21st: I've mandated the production of shoes, pants, socks, and shirts.

I have decided to take some alone time to calm down. They had better get my clothes done soon.

Heisenberg here. I am afraid that after too long not having proper clothing, the body I once inhabited has gone berserk. He has already put to death two farmers. I have ordered a squad to put him down. I think I'll take this opportunity to make my exit. Everything was going just fine until the siege hit. I still accomplished much, but...

9th of Obsidian: The dwarf formerly known as me has been struck down. He took down three dwarves and a peahen before he went though. I am sensing a great animosity toward me and my rule... I'll be gone by the end of the month. I don't think ghosts can die, but I know that we can feel pain and if enough of the dwarves who have died under me because of stupid mistakes come after me they will ensure that I feel the pain. This should be a good opportunity to return with my report at least. I am sure the general will be delighted to hear about my successes. I'll just conveniently omit my failures.

11th: It was four dwarves. A fishery worker was just found dead. Also, for some reason none of the dwarves seem too keen on entombing the dead.

Heisenberg. Yet another siege has arrived. Three in one year. I can only say that Ardesonol is one of the unluckiest fortresses I have ever seen. Best of luck to the next Overseer, I'm getting out while I still can. Farewell corpses!
