Hey pw, I can put up a second poll asking what alternative (out of those 3) people would prefer the most, either next to the one already up or after we close down that first one.
Why don't we first put up a poll thats like the one we've already got up there, but with the two least popular options removed.
You sure? There's hardly votes for those 2 least popular options anyway, so  doubt they influence things much. And if I put up a new poll the old one will be deleted (though I always first copy the results of course, to ensure no data is lost). If you're sure that's what you want, I'll do that.

Okay, just to be the asshole who disagrees, I don't like orroborppolis(?) mostly based on the fact that the 'he who fights monsters' cliche is old and tired at this point and there's really little else it can be done with to make it really interesting. Especially since the end result has just been revealed to us from the start. If I'm going to have the character I make die horribly without any other alternative to it, why would I make them?

There's 6 votes tied up in those catagories in total. I wanna see which way they go because the two major categories remain an even split.

Hell, this could easily be interpreted as a good thing for generalists. If everything has a thing, then a generalist character is more likely to have some skill or item that counters the thing of an enemy or targets their weakness or whatever.

In theory, but as a generalist, you'd need to deal with everything the opposition can bring.  Numbers?  Need a solution.  Armor?  Need a solution.  Powerful weapons?  Need a solution.  Air support?  Need a solution.  A specialized character will have a built-in solution for all of those, save for maybe one thing.  A generalized character needs a different solution for each and every one, because you don't get any easy answers.

Plus, well, sure you can hit weakspots.  If you brought the right gear.  If you have enough time to pull of whatever plan that is.  If you have some way to not get killed first.. and if you make all your (much more difficult) rolls.

..and, well, you can't counter magic with not-magic, so you really can't trump someone else's thing.  That thing.. just works.

Hmmmmm...  while I like all the three ideas, I think the issues with MMWW's implementation will make it an entirely different experience than ER or the other two.  It can turn out incredible, sure, but I think people may be looking for something more personal.

I like the other two options, though, and have trouble picking a favorite.

No idea. Why did you make an ER character again?

I think that PW meant that, rather than become monsters as you rank up at set or random points, when you died you'd become a monster with power according to your status when alive. That seems a lot more logical, given the title, anyway, as well as the word "later", though PW would have to confirm this. Also, "he who fights monsters" seems a little odd in a game involving RP: what if a character didn't want to go mad?

The whole thing kind of reminds me of bloodborne, and the fates of the healing church clergy in particular.

The name, Orobopolis, is from oroboros and polis, (probably with "necropolis" in mind), meaning "eternal city" or somesuch.

To try and subvert the normal robotification initially.
Actually you just made me think, if they're fighting outright monsters in a place that kills things that aren't monsters, how do you get a 'he who fights monsters' situation? There's nothing morally ambiguous about that, and it doesn't count if you're forced to do it I believe.
Never played that, but didn't the DLC end it on a high note for once?

Well, whatever the case, I imagine that it will be close to Nuclear throne in regards to how things are for the character.

I think everyone knows where my preference lies.  I love strategy games, and I love magic games.

I suppose I probably prefer Oroboropolis over Homunculus.  Oro does seem like it would be a semi-repetitive dungeon crawl, and I dislike the inherent weirdness that's advertised as part of it ("Cockroash succubi with katanas!"), but at least it seems like it might go somewhere.  Homunculus doesn't sound like we'd have any overarching goal.  I also dislike the fact you're eventually *forced* to die and start over, and the longer you prolong that the harder you make things for everyone else, but I suppose it is a solution to the supervet problem.

I don't entirely see why MMWW would be necessarily more abstract or slower than Oro--is it because MMWW's magic system would add difficulty and complexity?  Or is it because MMWW isn't organized into specific missions, meaning everyone gets to act every turn, rather than just a small subset of the playerbase?

Lastly, I have to ask: Why not both?  Oroboropolis and MMWW seem to have similar settings.  Both have a central city which is safer than the outside world, both have the option to explore outside that city in search of valuables, and both seem fairly cynical and doomed.  Would the systems behind MMWW not work very well as the "off-mission" gameplay for those who aren't actively exploring?  Or would the combat/magic systems of the two games conflict too strongly?

The only forseeable problem is that it seems to have more of a "kill loads of monsters, die a lot, read some lore if you want" plot, than an actual moving plot: more like a souls game, if ER could be compared to, well, pretty much any FPS, in its delivery of narrative.

Yeah.  Even the name implies that no real progress or change will ever be reached.  It'll just be a loop of wandering through dungeons, collecting loot, killing a boss, becoming said boss, repeat ad nauseam.  I think it'd be interesting for a little while, but would get boring fairly quickly.

This is partially why I suggested it be mixed with MMWW.  PW's already shown that Oro's system works in other games--that's what the Deep Infirmary is.  MMWW would work very well as the part of the game which we can progress and achieve things in.  Oro would work well as a sidequest type thing, where you can risk your life and soul in order to gain power.  Sidequests are allowed to be redundant, so Oro actually works better in that role, IMO.

And, again, the settings work well together.  The only significant change is to say that MMWW takes place in an infinite city, and that the part we live in is just the part that is mostly inert and safe, rather than the entire city.
