PW typically ignores bold inside quotes. you should put bold outside quotes to draw his attention. Honestly, I'd recommend just removing the quote entirely and just posting a new bold list.

Well, talking to him IC is what Milno just did. IC, Dester did nothing wrong at all since most of the argument took place OOC and screaming while someone tries to kidnap you is an acceptable response. Dester's in my draft but I wanted to make sure the cat lover wouldn't refuse orders in case we had to kidnap and vivisect kittens or something.

Hmmm. I think I'll just follow the suit, then, rather than keep sitting on the fence. Hmmm.
Oh, and the list is almost ready as well, fleshing out just a few final choices.

Oh, and Vanessa being a living embodiment of Sa'las? This is interesting. I really wonder how Maurice would react to an avatar of Sa'las, now that with Brother Mesk dead (and probably sainted) and literally the only thing that remains of him is his arm. This probably holds some significant religious meaning to him; we'll see when he meets her (Vanessa).

Also, ooh, MCP-II royalties! I'm going to be rich!
This might even hasten MCP-III a bit. Maybe. ...Nah, who am I kidding. It'll get done when it gets done, no sooner.

Finally: Are there any people at all interested in purchasing Sharkmist item-growing vats? RC says there are, but I am a little doubtful.

You'll still need to find limbs to give to people, so you could use it as well.

Can Sharkmist be used to produce things besides limbs? Like, custom organic structures?

I believe yes (well, most of the time so Pw could theoretically deny some 'cheaty' things), but the growing vat has to be particularly set to produce that type of things back on Hephaestus. So "custom" as far as you can contact Heph and request a custom shape for your item-growing vat.
At least, that's how I would theoretically do such things.

Well, the DoctorBody requires you to give up your body because it becomes your body, it's large (meaning hard to bring back on ship if it is disabled, although doing so without killing the user is hard) and is conspicuous and lacks heavy armour. And it's not even an armoury item yet. If it ever became an armoury item, then it would be better in terms of cost and capabilities than a surgery kit+advanced kit+exoskeleton+sharkmist vat*(potential cost for multiple vats for multiple organs if they can't be reprogrammed) but it would still have the above disadvantages. And the vats are a one time investment that can be donated to the medic fund, so that can be excluded from the above cost. So there is still use for them.

You'll still need to find limbs to give to people, so you could use it as well.
She has a lot of limbs, so she should be fine for a couple of missions, provided we don't go up against some sort of limbstealer. And if she's lucky, lost limbs can be covered by standard repairs, since damage is probably the only way to lose so many limbs so quickly.

Yeah, there are. Here is a relevant quote.

Hey Ozarck, are you still interested in trying to buy that limb-vat? Right now would probably be a good time to met IC if you still want to try and do that.
I'm still interested, but I think the rug has been pulled out from under us with Xan.
Nah. He only has robotic limbs, so he wouldn't take our potential customers. He might even buy a limb or two himself.

It's fine.

Yeah, I posted that, hopped over to the IC thread, and was like "derp. oops."

vivisecting kittens is kinda mild compared to what I'd expect "morally darker grey" to be in this setting. Try "harvesting orphan organs and blaming the UWM." "Poisoning militarily viable planetary systems for the war effort," "kidnapping families of high-ranking opponents," "Forcing colonists to watch reruns of Family Matters," "testing nyartifacts on the unsuspecting populace," "human centipede and two girls, one cup fan fiction."

I feel dirty just typing that Family Matters one.

What are the onship rules for testing nyartifacts on unwitting maniacs? I mean, do people accept that we may as well be rid of them, if they cause trouble? Right? And its all in the name of science?

Isn't that true for every Armoury item? Yet everybody seems to somehow know how to fly a shuttle or pilot a MK3 or use a mining exosuit or a computer with people even being able to exchange those suits during a mission. Unless you are proposing that humans somehow naturally know how to fly with MK3s by watching too many spy films. Do you want to have people pass mandatory classes with a multiple choice exam in the end to be able to use a piece of equipment?

Yes, realism for the realism throne!

I always kinda assumed that people had some VR training for those things, or that a person with, say, decent enough aux would be generally skilled enough to quickly adapt to a suit (before, anyone could pilot a battlesuit just like that, but now you need +2 aux, aka a very decent knowledge of such systems. Retcons!)

Quote
Limbs are even simpler than the above. You're not that concerned about feeling or other nerves. You're just concerned about connecting the 3 or 4 (can't remember right now) main nerves that control movement and probably ensuring the nerves responsible for feeling are somewhat right to provide feedback for handling fragile objects. After that, the system can self-adjust and determine the right nerve for each muscle using a machine-learning system, if the doctor can't determine that during surgery with the future-tech medical tools presumably included in the surgery kit. After that, it's just a matter of the body getting used to the limb (and vice versa if the limb has an appropriate self-adjustment system), which is fairly easy, since the body has a very good capacity to adjust to changes that happen to it.

If you wanted things to be completely realistic, then any new piece of equipment would give a penalty and would have a chance of failure when used until the user adjusts to them (probably an hour or less if in stressful conditions), but that would make things needlessly complicated for no real benefit, just for the sake of what someone thinks should be realistic with futuretech. And when we have things like AIs or memory wiping or magical super-strong white flesh or near-infinite generators or tiny batteries with near-infinite power, I don't think a tool capable of helping a doctor perform surgery and reconnect the right nerves in the field is the thing that would be most unrealistic.

It'd have to be much more complex than that (at lest, if you want fine motor control, if all you need is the ability to make a fist to bash stuff, you can make do with rudimentary control). But yes, as I said, we can handwave it with ER FuturetechTM. Was just wondering if pw ever came up with an explanation for that.

Quote
If you don't want a good medic on the mission just because there's a very slim chance she might need to buy some extra tools, there's not much I can do about it.

How is Xan a god medic? He hasn't healed anyone yet! And that's not putting it correctly: I do need to have an idea what he can do to know if giving him one of the precious mission seats is worth the 'investment' of not bringing another char.

Quote
I'd say being trapped on a hostile planet beats losing the Sword because we can't go down there to stop whatever danger is there. Because if it is something we could simply shoot from orbit, then the ambush would make little sense, because even if they kill all of us, the Sword could just nuke the installation from orbit. That's why I'm thinking that if it is an ambush from human forces and not some space magic disaster or alien predator, then it is not an ambush for us. It's an ambush for the Sword. And that's why I'm thinking an ambush by human forces is not very likely.

'Loosing the Sword'? Now that came out of nowhere. Either way, we don't know what the people/things down there know or have, so I'm gonna try not to gamble any assets on a blind drop. If it turns out they have a hidden laser cannon, I'd rather loose an empty shuttle and some gunnerbots than a shuttle full of troopers! If that turns out to be the case, we can then reconsider our approach.

Quote
Besides, any ground forces you send won't be able to progress past the gate on the surface for gameplay's sake. Because if we could just remote control sods from orbit, we'd do that every mission. So the colony would still be an unknown to us, we'll just know it's probably safe to land. Unless they did something like bury nukes in the colony and detonate them to trap us in a sinkhole, but again, unlikely due to gameplay.

Again, meta considerations. But yes, the plan for this wasn't to let sods do the mission, just prevent drop troubles from going in blind and keep our escape route secured.

Quote
About sods, true, staying with the shuttles is the only good use I can think of them, besides minesweepers. Assuming they don't go berserk because we awoke some sort of alien artefact and damage or destroy our return shuttle before Steve can zap them (even worse if we lose contact or trigger some sort of anomaly and go to another dimension or something).

About trigger discipline, I'm concerned about their orders. If you remember, Flint once walked straight up to one of them and the sod did nothing until he zapped the sod to death. They also display an astounding lack of concern about other things and self preservation during combat. (Since there have been no explicit mentions of any advanced training program, I'm assuming we're giving them the same old UWM training.) So you'd need orders that take care of that, so that they shoot any bad guy they spot, but not shoot anybody who is not a bad guy and also be careful not to damage anything important while shooting. One could argue the same thing about players, but players don't really need to be given that clear orders beforehand. They screw up naturally due to their own choices and bad luck.

Good, attentive commanders solve a lot of problems with sods. And at least, when you tell a sod not to shoot, or to move in or away, or to do easy action x they won't ignore it or wander off or do stupid shit like players do.

Quote
I'm mostly concerned about the fact that they probably have very little will-power. They are not truly human. And humans are known to be somewhat "magical". Their "free range" lives and memories have something in them. Furthermore, sods don't have anything to fight for. They feel constant pleasure as long as they are following orders. So there's nothing they can really draw on for motivation. I don't really know exactly how space magic works, but I doubt the can "scream the loudest" as the AM put it. I mean, consider the fact that 3 trained UWM black ops officers killed themselves because of sharkmist radiation. You'd think sods would had fared better in the same circumstances?

I think the sharkmist did what it did by inducing certain emotions on people, right. Would that work on sods? Maybe not, they have no emotions. As for screaming the loudest, it may be that an intruder finds nothing to scream at, nothing to really influence/overpower (like a 'psychic blank' in WH40K). Or that someone using an amp will have trouble targeting them, cause he is used to targeting normal people with normal brain architecture and psychology. I don't know, is my point, so I wouldn't assume with certainty they are exceptionally weak vs mindscrew.

Quote
Putting manipulator brains there on the other hand (or any other potentially hostile/unwilling brain for that matter) might be a bad idea if they can try to take over the body or merely whisper seditious thoughts to her.

Xan (and his new incarnation) are still strictly banned from spacemagics.

Quote
Can Sharkmist be used to produce things besides limbs? Like, custom organic structures?

It should, but we'll have to check with pw how far that could go.
