Sambo: your drunken, space-Australian culinary specialist. Ooooh, can that be my rank? Maybe something shorter.... Laser Chef?

I'll probably skip tomorrow's turn, or at least delay it till the next day. Math is being a real bastard so I'm gonna spend most of tomorrow teaching myself. And writing a paper about Gawain and the Green Knight, aka Christian allegory #435380983045 from the middle ages.

We'll just look at it as pre-heating the oven on mission 18  8)

Hmm, a rank system.  So now you can officially be a unnecessary character, except in addition, you can be an unnecessary player as well.  Of course, since there are now shinies, it's an improvement!

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be chaotic ER-style fun once missions are planned, and run, from top-down.

Overall, the idea seems thought-out and cool. I also support Toaster's notion. That way we could finally achive the 'hybrid' result we decided upon earlier - keeping some of the Corps-defining freedom, yet institute a bit of 'straight fucking military' going with the formation of the ARM. I have a little trouble feeling the difference between the three lower ranks (as opposed to two: 'skilled' and 'newbie'), but pehaps it could be understood as 'minor veteran', 'survivor' and 'freshman'. Okay.

I agree that one rank (probably Apprentice) could be stripped out, unless PW wants to keep it for equipment allotment purposes.  In player-player interactions, there's no real purpose for it.

I don't support the idea of 'black ops' being excluded from hierarchy, however. They still go on other missions sometimes, they still have skills and stats and equipment and progress pretty much as everyone else. Why should they not be judged by their merit like everyone else? Perhaps that means that we'd need another section for 'purer' black ops (now that such builds become possibility).
Another point against exclusion from hierarchy by 'answering only to Steve' is that it would set a very dangerous precedent. For example, why shouldn't be excluded people who don't even answer to Steve most of the time? I am talking about those poor souls 'claimed' by the Doctor, like Renen or Lukas. It has been established so far that Steve doesn't quite count them as his own responsibility any more (rather than the Doc's), after all.

Black Ops has only Milno and now Skylar as permanent members, sure, but it does "borrow" people from regular ranks for missions.  I would just see it as the Black Ops draftees report to Milno when they're on mission and up the standard command otherwise.

I doubt the Doc would interfere in mission, so I don't see that as a real problem.  If the Doc's toys beat the crap out of each other on the Sword, then the generals can just look the other way.

I still think that having 'negative' ranks was a funny and interesting idea. Why don't have 'Hazard' and possibly even 'Immediate Hazard' ranks? Stacy and Xan-1 (may they rest in peace, our valiant brothers in arms) would certainly fit the former and the latter positions as of immediately before M15, I think. Hindsight 20/20, of course.
And such examples exist for all of the sections, I believe.

The only catch is there's no real place to slot that in.

Boy, mission 18 is going to make me feel bad if it's just an internal witch-hunt by the king. We're going to drag a bound, naked woman across the desert, give her no water, lasering, heat-gunning and possibly microwave amping her all the way, only to throw her in a hole to kill her. Really gotta hope there's an alien entity inside her, otherwise we're just being really mean. Let's hope that the diplomacy mission doesn't find out about it if we're wrong. We might not look too nice if they do.

Well, she is dressed like a witch surrounded by dead things, so that's stereotypical bad sign right there. Unless they dressed her like that they set it up to make it more believable.

It's cool. We can fuck up as much as we want. M17 is dealing with a different king/territory.

Was just thinking that maybe she was originally from that other kingdom. The word subject can mean prisoner under certain circumstances. Could be a former noble that we're about to sacrifice. The dead things don't have to have been from her.

Be interesting to know how she got possessed in any case.

For the strikeout, I believe the word you're looking for is "Skyclad," meaning you're actually correct.

Nah, it'll be fine. The inevitable orbital bombardment will eliminate all evidence.  :P

It was one mission!  It's not like it's a habit.

I wonder how many Dune jokes PW is gonna make while we're in the desert.
