If you're stuck on ship... well... that sucks, I'm afraid. Abusing VR's Tinker program to design yourself excessively expensive, terribly-functioning weapons or other devices is a common way to pass the time.

If you want to make it up to him, try holding on a discussion of various classical philosophers and their works, weighing their merits and idolizing them. Piecewise is a big philosophy buff.
