Hrmmm. Taking a look at the stats, Gorat and Morul have the highest willpower, so we'd be the best to resist the mindfucks that are surely incoming. Coincidentally, we're the some of the worst people to talk to her because if we do fail the mindfucks, we can rapidly cause massive amounts of damage.

Do you think that the fact his ghosts are "malfunctioning" means that he is already resisting mind control in some way?

I still think that having 'negative' ranks was a funny and interesting idea. Why don't have 'Hazard' and possibly even 'Immediate Hazard' ranks? Stacy and Xan-1 (may they rest in peace, our valiant brothers in arms) would certainly fit the former and the latter positions as of immediately before M15, I think. Hindsight 20/20, of course.
And such examples exist for all of the sections, I believe.

The only catch is there's no real place to slot that in.[/quote]
Actually, why not simply rename Apprentice to Hazard? That way either one is skilled and reliable, and becomes Journeyman straight from Novice, or skilled but unreliable, which means he is still a Hazard.
We could also have them right below Novice if we want a more linear approach to ranking system.
Or, for what it's worth, it could be a separate ranking system altogether, or something like a honorary title. Can't picture a true Hazard being put in charge of a squad, however, so it's place must still be somewhere in those 'lower' ranks.

Of course, all of the above is for interaction-worldbuilding purposes. Equipment-allotting system might or might not work with that (depends on how much we actually want to restrict our Hazards).

Do you think that the fact his ghosts are "malfunctioning" means that he is already resisting mind control in some way?
I find it doubtful; if it was interacting with them already, someone else should have sensed something wrong already, or got a will roll (which are known to be unsubtle at times). I suppose the active influence of the Eater isn't there yet.
Instead, it could be that they have stumbled upon something similar to the nature of the flask. Could the Eater of Cold be operating on the same 'frequency' as the flask, so to speak? By virtue of sheer proximity and power he, inactive, could be 'drowning' the ghosts communications in 'static'. I wonder, would dying there, disconnected from the flask, mean severing the link and not going into the flask, like every other user before? ...I really hope Gorat won't get the chance to check it out.

Th way I understand it, the flask kind of merged with Gorat. Maybe, in some fashion, he is the flask. What I know is, when he dies, the flask should reappear, with him now being part of the ghosts. Whether the static Gorat's experiencing with the ghosts could cause that not to happen...

"That heat gun seems like the right tool for the job. Good thinking Vincent."

I think Dubley's carrying a fitting tool for the job as well. Set the Raduga to infrared or microwaves, high diffusion, and you can pretty much keep the host as hot as you like for as long as you need. ^_^

Well yes, Sambo and Dubley also have effective heat rays. I just find it amusing how Vincent picked up a very niche weapon last mission that just so happens to be useful for this mission.

Back to ranking talk. For pure authority ranking I think this is enough for now. We can always alter details later if it seems appropriate. Only real addition here is squad leaders and specialists.
Those on top can order around those on below, blackops being special case. The Joker team, currently consisting only of Milno and Skylar, take commands only from Steve as long as they are not on regular missions. Otherwise they should be considered at least Squad Leader (except Milno who is General). Soldiers (most of us) do not have any authority over each other.

Medals, if needed, would be basically your avarage achievements. Rewarded from number of specific acts, for example saving lifes of allies, recovering artifacts or other valuable information, other acts of bravery... that's actually all that comes in mind right now. But yeah, medals equals achievements. Get pretty pictures of your fancy medals on your wiki page!

Role/Designation is kinda difficult thing to decide since there's many things that matters. Skill bonuses, overall competence, total mission experience, character personality, equipment (might be less important if we go for renting model)... Some ranking here might be useful, but it shouldn't have anything to do with authority. Legendary Space Wizard may have some authority due sheer respect of his peers (nobody would fuck with Legendary Space Wizard Jim even if he wasn't a General).

One thing I would add though, would be the distinction between novices (mosty new recruits and lemmings) and privates/soldiers. Note that soldiers have no real authority over novices, but it could serve as a sort of 'rite of passage', indicating to the person being peomoted to soldier that (s)he is now recognized by his peers as a valuable and competent addition to the team.

Or if someone feels like becoming drillsargeant, that person could design vr courses and tests one must pass in order to achieve the next rank.

Note that this is purely optional, if people prefer everyone below squad leader to be in the same group, that's ok for me as well. Might foster team cohesion more, unsure.

You could also take a note from actual militaries and give people two ranks during training, where you can then find out if people are capable of tying their own shoes.  Then everyone can start off at, say, subcommander, and it would be just fine.

Ranks might be important if someone dies or is otherwise unavailable. For example, if Jim and Miyamoto need to go on a meeting and Steve cannot be contacted, then who is in charge?
