I've been dealing with some players under the impression that overshots are supposed to be more good than bad.

As the largest RtD game in this or quite possibly any forum...thoughts?

Overshots are typically basically good, but also bad, at least as I envisioned them. I later implemented a "severity" roll because sometimes a "6" doesn't tell you enough about how severe the unintended effects are. But "1" is ultrabad, whereas "6" is "good but also bad" - so a "6" with severity "6" is about as bad overall as a simple "3", with the extra good thrown in. If that makes any sense, that is.

*Looks back at previous turns*

NOPE.  Actually, from a more serious perspective, it depends on what is being overshot on.  Con, for example, tends to overshoot by getting headshots when you just wanted a heart shot, or shooting even more people, or firing the grenade to take out the whole building, ect.  Certainly more destructive, but most of the time overkill is really more of a good thing.

But with certain skills, such as AUX, MED, or HANDI, overshots are worse than failing.  With AUX, your program will, if you're lucky, just be incapable of fulfilling the role you wanted it to fulfill.  If not, it'll be actively bad for you.  MED overshoots tend to involve unneeded amputation, or even decapitation.  Usually it'd be better to just fail rather than killing/crippling the person.  And Handi overshots... well, they're nearly as bad as a one if you want it to perform to your specs.  Usually, it ends up with a result that is terrible for the intended purpose, and uses all (or more) of your materials

...IMO, in my own games, overshots are just "You did the thing, but extaggerated.  That may be good or bad."  A overshit fireball will take out twice the people, so it's good, but driving like a action movie hero down a public street... is not very good at all.  Unless you're in an action movie scenario.

Depends on what you're going for.

If you just mean "What does the default RTD system say" or "What gets used most frequently," then I'm not sure why it matters. The default wording usually doesn't specify ratios, and more good than bad is probably more common than 50/50 or more bad than good.

Well, I nearly died as a result of my recent overshot, so I'd say bad.

I've usually seen the results of rolls defined in the first post of the game. So if you've defined the results of overshoots there, nobody has any right to complain. For example, ER's first post talks about cleaning the windows of an ammo warehouse with a laser rifle on overshoot.

if you killed a battlesuit you can get some rocket pods, those are the only things that survive lifelock detonation.

If you want loot you gotta keep the owner alive long enough for a technician to disable the lifelocks.

Clearly running multiple missions at the same time is a terrible idea.  The epic battle to see which team can cock it up worse has escalated again.

And Larry kinda gets blueballed in all this; just left with a raging bone spear and no where to put it.

You also threw an eight.  Which is something to say- the higher the roll, the more extreme the results.

Speaking from Pit of Magic, I made overshoots do what you wanted, but generally endanger you in some way.  If you were creating an item, it was bigger and clunkier than you had intended.  If you were casting a fireball, it might incinerate your target but also burn you as well.  If you were dodging a blast, you did so but landed face down (or had to roll to avoid going over a ledge.)

To be fair, I'm pretty sure I killed the battlesuit guy as well, I just toasted myself along with him.

Yeah.  You probably also incinerated the suit, not just the dude.  And spent many extra mind points, I imagine.
