Also, I've just realized how tough the vault door must be for something that is designed for blowing through Asteroids would take about a minute to cut through it.

They should totally just ship down a HEP or a cutting laser and tunnel under the bank from a nearby store.

I don't think a HEP or a cutting laser would work too well with tunneling, as the HEP would pretty much just vaporize a hole in one direction, so it would take at least a few hours/days of figuring out how far it would vaporise with one shot, the exact area to go in from (As just figuring out at what angle or direction to fire after firing the original blast would take a while), you might be able to dig in a V shape, this is assuming that the underground is all precisely the same composition, course, encountering rocks compared to dirt wouldn't really effect the tunnel distance that much...
And the cutting laser would only really be able to make gashes in the ground, so actually tunneling with it wouldn't really do much.

you are kidding right?
this is exactly GODDAMN PERFECT for tunnelling... you dont have to bother with dragging away and disposing of the excess dirt and rock.
simply fire down on a 35 degree angle, fire a few times from the bottom of that tunnel directly forwards, and then walk along the tunnel till your GPS or cameyes says your under the bank and use the cutting laser, which is designed to cut through asteroids, to cut a tunnel up through the floor of the vault.

then you just climb up that hole, use a few laser rifles or cutting torches to steal the safety deposit boxes then head back to the rendezvous point and bugger off before the vault's time lock expires for morning trading.

In that case it would probably work, a bit expensive, but it would work.
