What to do you do with gems?
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:15:04 pm »

Gems!
Dwarfy, shiny and nice to look at.
You can feel the wealth of the stone.

But what to do with them other than placing them in a bin?

Have just begun to make gemwindows, that can use up a great number.

Encrust with gems seems so hard for me, to link up some furniture and gems to the same place. Are there any easy way?

Encrusting furniture without linking stockpiles has some... less than desirable results I've found. In my current fort my gem setter seemed to be fixated with encrusted bags and anvils of all things. I was going to melt those anvils...

Early on I usually order them cut and sold off for semi-useful stuff, but I usually forget about the jeweller workshop once a fort is up and running since they're pretty useless except for reading about the amusing images they might design.

I have encrusting working in a basic setting...I don't care WHAT they encrust, so I just set them to encrust shtuff. Don't specify where to get it from either. I'm lazy like that.

I'm sorry your husband had a strange mood and ended up making a useless trinket out of useless materials without gaining any experience in the process.

But how would you simulate the pixels that vanish?

It's too bad we can't encrust clothes with gems.

Oh yes, we can. My jewellers were very fond of encrusting tattered clothing scattered across the fortress. I don't tell them to "encrust finished goods" anymore because of that.

Pick a colour for the 'vanished' pixels.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Hoard the valuable ones (especially for moods), use the junk ones to train jewelers.

Make a statue garden room underground for hosting parties. Copious numbers of multicolored gem windows are placed to simulate strobe lights. Dwarven nightclub! Build this on its own z-level so that you don't have to look at it often, to prevent eye strain.

Wait until the liason offers a 248% profit margin on crowns.
Then craft a ☼«☼gold crown☼»☼.
Then watch the traders' jaws drop to the floor when you casually offer them a single item that's worth about as much as their entire city.

But seriously, I find encrusting items worthwhile only in the first few years, when you're actually poor.

Encrust your soldiers' armor with gems to blind the enemy?

That should totally be in a mod somewhere.

If you do, you will win at least one Internet.

But how would you simulate the pixels that vanish?
Simple - use black and white gems (or stones). The trick is that you need to cut them (and build the windows) in the correct order, since I seem to recall that gem windows animate based on the order in which their components were created.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I set up entirely too complicated stockpile systems so that my dwarves cut all the gems (except the super valuable ones which are saved for special purposes) and then encrust trade goods or furniture for nobles and blinging statue gardens.  Also often clothes because why shouldn't my dwarves be blingin'?

Tends to result in creating literal tons of Dwarven Disco Balls - the amount of gems they can glue onto a single large gem is a little terrifying - but hey, they make good offer bait.

That, and I just don't like bunches of uncut gems lying around.  Must process everything.

I throw them at traders.  Sometimes with the trade screen sometimes with a minecart.
But seriously in my last fort I ignored them except as year 1 or 2 trades, after that they kinda fell by the wayside and usually get binned somewhere 'just in case'
