Disease / Sickness
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:02:39 am »

Hi, I turned off disease in the settings. However, my dwarves still get sick (en masse), with vomit/blood everywhere.

Is there a way to turn it off entirely or deal with it easily? It is just too much.

Thank you.

After turning diseases off you have to generate a whole new world. Most things in the gui menu for Masterwork you have to commit to before generating a new world to play your fortresses in.

Rabies might still be active in animals.  I think that might be fixed in the studded with patches thread, which by the way is very much worth installing.

That's probably what I didn't do, I'll try that now.

Also, I tried playing an orc. All I did was load up the '[ORC]' in the embark screen and eventually it gave me dwarves. I didn't add or load anything, I just DLed the Masterwork main download (latest version). How can I play orcs and not dwarves? Thanks.

First make sure that ORC is a playable race in your settings before generating the world.  Now when you are picking your civilization at embark scroll through them.  The dwarves appear as the blue statues on the map.  The Orcs will appear as another symbol.  Choose a civilazation with that other symbol then select and ORC embark profile or make your own.  The profiles tend to help though with orcs unique needs.

Another option is to only have orcs as playable.  Then select any civilization.  I'm not sure how up to date the 4g orcs are.  You might want to look at the rebalanced orc thread on here.  It's been updated a lot to work better with the newer masterwork version.

Oh hmm well on my laptop here I only have version 4c with my 4g version on my main computer back home.  The GUI changed to a newer version since then.  But if I am recalling correctly there should be a tab with a huge list of races in the game.  You can turn them on or off here.  Next to the Dwarves, Kobolds, and Orcs should also be the option to set them as playable or not.  Dwarves will be your only default playable on race here.  In a few days Meph will release the Warlock addition as well and then they will show up as playable.

I see, thank you for all your help, good sir.

A few more questions:

How do I build the more advanced buildings (like Brewery instead of Distellery?)
What does Magic do?

What does Magic do?

Magic is very complicated to explain.  I also haven't messed with it very much.  I'm more of a steel against flesh kind of overlord.  I'd suggest reading through the magic portion of the manual closely.  But as you are starting out I'd suggest avoiding fire magic until you know what you are doing.  The ranged magic users don't have friendly fire off haha.

As for your brewery go into build and workshops like you normally would.  The list will be much longer in there.  Scroll down until you see Brewery and build it.  If you don't have all the materials available in the top right will pop up in red whatever is necessary that you don't have. Most likely for brewery you will be short on empty barrels.

Also we have veered off topic.  There is actually a thread usually on the first or second page about gameplay questions.  Most of your basic ones should go into DWARF.  There is also an ORC one for ORC specific gameplay tips and using their unique buildings.  You can go in each thread and use the search function at the top to find most of these already answered.

The main part is spend some time in that manual. It's very well written and gives quite a few hints.  Start out learning the basics of new workshops.  You won't really hit magic until your fortress is rather mature since it require platinum and other reagents.

It may also be worth your time to check through the random threads here.  You'll find several good reads in forts people are making and youtube let's play videos.  Both entertaining and educational.
