I'm thinking of doing a forum game soon which will involve a fair amount of ASCII maps. Like, all maps ASCII. I've been thinking of planning stuff out a bit, so I can get things to work and maybe get feedback.

Let's start with the basics.

I don't have any suggestions for you directly, but if you are going to go through with this, have you checked out my ASCII drawing program?

I would like to think that it beats all the competition out there in most respects, and maybe it would be useful for you too, even right now, for easy prototyping. :)

On the other hand, it doesn't go so easily with forum games. Or have all the neat effects.

You are referring to the program?
I am not sure what you mean exactly.
Could you explain? I am always interested in seeing how I can improve my programs to make them more useful for more people. :)

Mainly that I personally consider text to be an easier medium to post on forums.

That, and I really like the abbr tag. Especially for ASCII games.

Fair enough. And whole the program does have plain-text export, that does not support colours in any form right now.

Hmmm... BB-code export. My that would be just the thing!
Maybe when I find the time some day.

If you're still looking for something like this GreatWyrmGold, the latest version of REXPaint exports BBCode. You'll probably want to load up one of the taller fonts (there are a bunch in the DF repository) so you can get more of a correct feel for what it will look like on a forum--I've only included square fonts with REXPaint.

As an example, I took an old drawing of a heavy plasma gun for X@COM and show it as it appears in 1) REXPaint, 2) a text file (txt), and 3) a forum:
