(Since we can't get maces, knives, spears and those kinds of cheap weapons, while still having swords >.>)
(Forgot about spears and I haven't thought a place for knives to fill, but I have reasons for the lack of maces. In this game, they good vs heavy armour(knights mostly) who will not appear for the first 'level' and thus so no one could have a 'useless' weapon.

It's still good for breaking bones, and smashing skulls. Knives would essentially be a sidearm: You use it when you have nothing else on hand.

"realism" would have everyone having maces/axes/bows and swords as a rarity.
I don't understand gaming trends of swords being the "average" weapon, when in reality they were top-tier super-expensive stuff. Good swords that is.

(Name a weapon type that could be the Mario of weapon types. You should be able to see why sword drew the short straw.(If you do come up with one non-sword, well done. I been here for 5 mins failing.))

(Sling are in bows, Javelins will proable be put with spears when I stat them up. Warhammers and flails are in maces(well clubs))

Axes, if you put a spike ontop of the haft. Or just use spears.

Should I expand on the backstory?

People see them as the "standard" medieval weapon, and they're the most common weapon in fantasy. Hence, they're the basis everything else is based off of. Plus, from a layman's point of view, it looks like they can do a bit of what just about any other weapon can.

Axes, if you put a spike ontop of the haft. Or just use spears.
Axes are unwieldy no matter what you put on the top.
Spears have more reach than most other weapons and can't slash, unlike most weapons. They also suck at bludgeoning.

They're always pretty unbalanced. Putting a big, sharp bit of metal on the end of a stick does that. Unbalancedness always makes it less wieldy.

Of course if you want a "jack of all trades" weapon, you'll end up with swords. And that's precisely why swords were RL-OP and goddamn expensive. Because they are able to do (almost) everything that maces, axes and spears could, and more. They're not "jack of all trades, master of none", they're "master of everything". Steel swords were basically magic weapons back in the viking age. +ulfberh+t (sic) anyone?

Glaives and naginatas can be used to slash and stab, as can be halberds.

There's always double-sided axes.

Maybe say who/what killed his mother. At the moment, it come off as he kill her, but could of been old age or another killer.

Axes, if you put a spike ontop of the haft. Or just use spears.
A wood axe is as light as you can get(in RL) and they still have a weight behind them that other weapons can balance better. Spears are the glass cannon of weapons. Sure you can block, but that not what they were made for.
and then ninjas

You didn't ask why sword are OP in RL, you ask why they are the mario in games.

There's always double-sided axes.
Still unbalanced(think recovering from a swing, not can I balance it on my palm)

If you're using a spear to block, you deserve everything that happens to you :P

Maybe make it blunt/point/edge instead of accurate/damaging/median of the two?
