Crates not unpacking
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:42:11 am »

I recently ordered some crates from a caravan and built the trade storehouse in a floor below the surface where the trade depot is. I noticed however that the crate of supplies remains inside the depot and the reactions to unpack in the trade storehouse remain highlighted red.

How do I get the crates to unpack? It says it should be done automatically but the crates just sit there.

I've also had this issue, but only with crates of small bullets in Orc mode.  Can't even get them to unpack through the manager menu

burrows?

No burrows active for a long while now.

I've only ordered library supplies and engineer crates so far, but I'm assuming all crates will have this problem for me.

I noticed that these crates are classified under bar/block. But they aren't being moved to my stockpiles. Do they have to be stockpiled first before opening?

I've always had this issue before.  Try building the trade storehouse closer to the depot.  I've had time where I've literally had to deconstruct the depot and dump the crates to get them out of the depot.

Also have the traders left yet?  Sometimes dwarves won't go get the crates to unpack until the traders have left.

This could be it, it might be like butcher's shops, where unless the corpse is close to the shop, it doesn't run the job.

why would you deconstruct the depot for that?
You should be able to dump them via t-screen

I've had them get stuck in the depot before.  I'd use the T screen to dump it and they would never go get it.  Then I would deconstruct the depot and an idle dwarf would finally go get the crate to dump.

You have to get the items within a dozen or so spaces of the building to unpack. And on the same floor.

If you don't want to remove you supply depot, you'll have to set a garbage point next to the building and then dump the boxes there, then unforbid and they'll unpack them.

This also applies to boxes lost by caravans thanks to god damn warlocks. Because for whatever reason, storage won't recognize crates.

An "open crate ..." Order from the manager will usually open the forgotten crates.

I like to think of it as someone slacking off until the boss finds out.

No burrows active? What do you mean by "active?" I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter if they have citizens in them, if a non-alert burrow encompasses a workshop, that workshop's reactions are limited by what reagents are in the burrow. For example, I put my garrison in a burrow, so I could make dwarves go there right away for military training. As soon as I put it in a burrow, before adding any dwarves, the workshop became unusable, as no coins were accessible. When I put a coin stockpile in the burrow, and it filled up, the garrison jobs became white again.

Edit: my trade depot is one floor above my trade warehouse, and it works no problem, so the warehouse does not need to be on the same floor.

I'll elaborate, I only have one burrow existing, and that's a civilian alert burrow that encompasses my entire inside fort. I "activate" his burrow to restrict all civilians into it during dangerous times. I haven't had my civilians on alert for awhile now, and I do not have any other specialty burrows to restrict workshops or dwarves.

Regardless, my problem seemed to be my trade storehouse being too far away from the crates. As soon as I dumped my crates nearby the trade storehouse, the reactions started. So I built the trade storehouse on the same level closer to the trade depot, and now crates unpack on their own.

doesnt matter if the burrow is active or not, as soon as it exists it can cause these issues. Its a DF bug that I cant affect at all. Every mod has this problem.

I always make a burrow named "EVERYTHING" that covers the whole map, fixes this kind of problem in one easy step :p

Yeah, burrows within burrows don't do anything.  You can have a complex maze of them, as long as the source products and end destination both have the same burrow.  A burrow that covers the entire map completely fixes these issues.
