No? Yes? What does it do? I would imagine it adds them to a PM shortlist, but I have no idea what it does.

And they don't even get a choice of it. They are legally forced to be your buddies.

It's a subtle ploy to breed elven emotions of love and social networking among forumdwellers.

So what does it do?

Highlights them on the "users online" list. It's useful mostly to check up on forum games I guess. I use it for Toady and Threetoe because I enjoy reading "it got a bit fiery in here so cool down".

I've never used either it or the ignore list. I tried the ignore list out on a troll once, but it was too annoying.

I use Buddy on GreatWyrmGold (because he was the first person to post after I noticed the system), but by and large it really doesn't affect me.

I put myself in my buddy list, so every time I sign on I have at least one friend.

More annoying then actually seeing their posts? I haven't seriously found a use for the buddy system, but the ignore list makes this forum 350% better.

Yes. Whenever I see an ignored post and the "click to expand" message, it grates on my compulsiveness and breaks the flow of the forum structure. I'd rather just scroll past posts I don't want to read.

Philosphically, I am opposed to the concept of an "ignore" button, as it promotes world view tunnel vision through selective reinforcement.

See for instance, the problem with "yes men", or with celebrities and doctors prescribing them drugs.

Seeing dissenting views is necessary for being well adjusted.

I disagree, and would conjecture a test.

Go to a MLP themed forum, and tell them that you disagree with adult fandom of MLP.

See how fast the ignore and or permaban happens.
