I really like this horrid Pirates of the Caribbean game on the original Xbox (by Bethesda maybe?). Horrendously buggy, feature lacking, and obviously rushed, but I dunno, it's a good pirate game.

Back in the days of DOS I had this demo CD called (something like) "101 America's Best Games", and one of those games was a 3D Formula 1 racing sim.

Not since the original DOS Worms had I had so much goddamn fun playing a game the wrong way. At the start of the race, if you timed it correctly, you could accelerate into the back of the car ahead of you, and - if you were lucky - magic would happen: you could bash parts of it off.

See, back then, damage modelling was pretty much unheard of. I mean, we're talking about the early days of 3D polygonal graphics... the best you could hope for in seeing visible damage on an object was replacing its sprite with a fiery explosion. But no, this game was special. In this game, if you rammed hard enough into another car, its wheels would fall off. It was mesmerizing.

I never finished a lap in that game. Not a one. I'd just fire it up, ram into the car ahead of me and watch its wheels fall off. I'd then hound my wounded prey as it veered and wobbled around the track, careening into the sand every time I rammed it like Bumper-cars, dirt-grey polygons rolling off the track like hexagonal bottle caps. Sometimes, even my own wheels would fall off!

I used to laugh so hard at crippling an AI car and then watching it try to keep going, despite having no wheels left. Best game ever. Loved it. Wish I still had that CD, or knew the actual name of the game, because I'd love to play it again for nostalgia sake.

There's a DOS game called Ferrari Formula One.  That might be it, if you are interested.

That reminds me of playing Aliens Versus Predator(not relevant to thread, game is goddamn awesome). You could shoot bits off the aliens, so what I would do was turn the game speed way down, pick the predator and start shooting off arms and legs. If you took out the arms, it would begin to bite you. The hardest bit was hitting the tongue, which was hard even in slow motion. In the end a crippled alien pretty much just walked up next to you and bled on you.

You may be interested to know that it's available on PC, and it's modding community have actually made it into a decent sailing sim.

Google Build mod 14, you'll find it easily. Be warned, biiiig download. But honestly, for all it adds, it's worth it.

Cookie Clicker and Candy Box 2 definitely fit the description. It's just watching numbers go up. Why is it so compelling? Also I don't PERSONALLY agree, but some people would fit Oblivion into this list. I don't know I just return to it way more often than the other TES games, I just enjoy it plus OOO I guess.

On another more obscure note (And a much older one) I guess would be P.O.W. on the NES. It's kinda shoddy in areas and clearly at times hard for the sake of busting your balls or ball equivalents. But for some reason I liked it and still had a lot of fun replaying it recently.

Is because Oblivion isn't as dumbed-down as Skyrim, but isn't as ROMHack-ey as Morrowind.

Batman Forever for the SNES, played with a friend cooperatively for the first time. The unintuitive controls and general crappiness made it a pretty hillarious experience.

Thanks to this post I looked up that game and was pleasantly surprised that it doesn't look bad.

The licensed PC games of Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as Quidditch World Cup. Pretty nice 3D puzzle platformers and a Quidditch video game. It's a shame that Goblet of Fire was... some sort of beat-em-up I guess? And the trailers for the Deathly Hallows game made it look like a cover shooter. :(

I don't remember any specific games, but they were probably the first ones. They were really quite fun. From what I remember the controls were a bit wonky but I liked the different spells and such.

There's this kind of Roguelike I used to play a lot more, where you have to manage hundreds of little guys with a text interface and get them to not die constantly. It was a bit like the Sims but with more murder and tragedy, cupidity and debauchery. So much unscrupulous behavior.

That said it's far and away the best game I've ever played and it still has huge potential.
Wow, that sounds like a really interesting game to try out. Do you happen to remember the name or anything?
I've played that. I think it's name was "Custer's Revenge", or "ET the Extraterrestrial". One of those, don't remember which.

Did they still bleed acid?

And on topic: 2-player Tetris, on the same board. I had a Famicon pirate cart that had a weird version of Tetris where you have a double-wide board and P1's pieces drop from the left, P2's drop from the right. Objective is the same, except the board is twice as wide, and, in variably, you'll tangle yourself up with your partner's block.

I... I had an atari 2600 with the E.T. cartridge. I was so young then I just assumed video games didn't make any sense and didn't worry about it. Feel in the > shaped well soooooo many times...

*ahem* So back when I had a sub to PC Gamer (waaaay back), one of the demo CD's had the original Carmageddon, which was pretty awful for racing. The AI was laughable and couldn't finish races on their own, and would rubberband on you and all that. You could destroy cars and win the race that way.... orrrrr you could flip them over so no one ever finished, then cover the entire map trying to run over every last pedestrian. There were trick jumps and lots of map completely off the race track... it was like if GTA tried to disguise itself as a racing sim.

As a racing game, it was horrible. As a sandbox? Amazing. I tried the full game at some point and it didn't even have the same handling physics, I don't know how it got messed up so badly from demo to full product.
