I need obsidian, and I heard that you could make obsidian with a special building and some materials. If this is true, then what are these buildings and materials?

I did try to use the search function, so please don't flame me if this question is redundant.

Note that this requires tempature to be enabled (it is by default)

Thing is I thought there was a specific reaction in a building just for making obsidian. Getting water to the magma sea for safe-to-extract obsidian is a lot more difficult than it sounds.

Crucible is the building you are looking for. Any 4 blocks can be molten down into 1 obsidian boulder.

Set up a pipeline with small piles:

input stone pile, gives to
mason's shop, make blocks /R
block pile, takes from mason's shop gives to
crucible, make obsidian / R
stone pile (obsidian only), takes from crucible, gives to
mason's shop #2, make blocks /R
block pile (obsidian only)

If you do those last two steps, don't forget to mark obsidian as workable in Stocks screen.  Use the crucible for other things by turning off the block pile's "give" to the crucible.  This is much simpler and (seems to be) much faster than traditional obsidian farming.
