Were-chameleons?

So I was in the object testing arena recently and found a creature called a were-chameleon, I had never seen this creature before so I consulted the DF Wiki, the wiki then tells me it's a mod, I have never installed any mods nor have I ever downloaded a modded DF client.

So my question is, how did this appear in the game? was it pre-packaged along with vanilla DF?

Game creates werecreatures randomly. There can be werechameleons, werecamels or even wererabbits.

I thought only reptiles and mammals could be werebeasts? In vanilla anyway.

Only reptiles and mammals? oh well I guess if there were a were-horshoe crab it'd still get mashed by an ordinary Human!
