The only reason we are doing so 'bad' is because there is ten axeman on the map, all with throwing axes.

Two of our guys use spears, two are mages, and one is strictly melee swordtype.

There is absolutely no way to kill them without taking heavy reprisal damage-and they can attack me freely, without risk. I mean, we killed five of them but our group is pretty much finished.

New Plan: AFK and let the NPC handle everything. I guess that's what Haspen wanted us to do.

Edit: The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that this is just the first mission, rather than, say, the final one.

Hills take 3 MOV to climb onto.

You would need total 6 MOV to get onto the hill from where you stood before attacking :v

Of course it doesn't at all matter since we're not likely to complete the first mission anyway. Depends on the secondary objective, really...
